Serendipity in Kanazawa

Recommended Posts

Just been out for a meal at an izakaya in Kanazawa. The first one we tried was fully booked, so we ended up at a tiny place next door (called Kappo Murai). Halfway through eating I looked up and happened to see these tegata above the door.

From the left: Konishiki, Hokutoumi (Hakakku), Asahifuji (Isegahama) and Kirishima (Michinoku). Apparently an Enka singer took the sheet round the various heya to get the prints done.

It's been a day of sumo serendipity after seeing an Enho-themed curry in the local fish market this afternoon (we even travelled here on the Kagayaki shinkansen, which made me wonder if that was a factor in Kagayaki's shikona, him being a Kanazawa native too).

It was the deciding factor

Kagayaki (Tatsu)
Accordingly his new shikona Kagayaki alludes to the train that will start operation in the Hokuriku region on March 14th, 2015

- during this basho.
On the Tokyo-Kanazawa (Ishikawa) Hokuriku-Shinkansen extension the fastest train is the Kagayaki.
Kagayaki wants to live up to that name. Takadagawa-oyakata had consulted with former prime minister Mori (from Ishikawa) and others in deciding to give him the shikona (as PR for Ishikawa).

I'm more surprised you haven't mentioned anything Endō related, considering how much more popular he is.

It seems like he was intensely popular until he got married, then his fans noticed 1) he's only hit double digits 4 times since 2018; 2) he's married.

I hadn't realised Endo was from Ishikawa too. I'll be on the lookout today though after yesterday's experience :)

Thank you for this! (I had been wondering which came first, the wrestler or the train).

I probably just wasn't paying attention :)

Here he is at the station along with Kagayaki and Enho. They don't seem to be advertising anything, I guess Kanazawa is just proud of its association with the rikishi (i.e. the PR for Ishikawa Akinomaki mentioned in the link above).

Funny. I wouldn't have associated Kagayaki's sumo with anything particularly fast. (Except Yom Kippur perhaps)
