Preparations of the masses- Kyushu 2022

Recommended Posts

Eight sekitori had a massive training session at Arashio beya, home of the Onami brothers today. Wakatakakage, seeking an Ozeki run, faced the likes of Houshouryuu and was 13-3. "I did not count the wins /losses. I just wanted to properly do my own sumo. I was able to train well with many rikishi from different heyas " he observed. Present were Houshouryuu, Meisei, Takanoshou, Nishikigi and Ounoshou on degeiko and Wakatakakage, Wakamotoharu and Juryo Koutokuzan. The atmosphere had a basho-like tenseness and Wakatakakage stood out with his come- from- under sumo. He even had eight straight wins at some point and had the most bouts among the sekitori, 16. "I can say that my body is moving well to some degree.. I want to properly train ahead of day 1 of the basho," he said. The 11-4 last basho puts him at a good starting position for another promotion. "The next basho is daiji! It's more a mental issue for me. I don't want to lose mentally and that is how I will be facing day 1," he summed.

Is it just me or does it seem like with the post-COVID return of degeiko, there seems to be much more inter-ichimon degeiko going on?

I might be wrong, but it felt like before the pandemic, this was really limited to Ozeki and Yokozuna privilege to go out and train with whomever they like.

I don't know if anyone has the answer but I wonder what has brought these particular combinations about... the stables aren't even remotely geographically close to each other (nor is Tokiwayama near Takekuma where Kintamayama reported Takakeisho as having visited). I can understand that Meisei and Hoshoryu want to challenge themselves against rikishi of a similar level, is that all it is? But one would think it'd be much easier for Onosho to head over and visit Sadogatake (unless he's moved far away from his heya)!

Arashio beya does seem to be very progressive and welcoming of rikishi, fans and also the oyakata's interaction with the media (ie. NHK & also Sumo Prime Time), which is a really nice development.

They might be scheduling it between themselves, the host stable opens up a date and the sekitori respond.

Conversely, when it comes to the intra-ichimon session. Each heya will host the rikishi of the same division. (Sekitori all go to the leading heya, makushita & sandamne to another, JJs might be split)

There's probably some element of overcompensating for the lack of degeiko during the COVID years and/or making the most of it while COVID seems to have abated. I wonder if it might also be a generational thing (as in the attitudes of different generations of rikishi and stablemasters towards degeiko) because IIRC three years ago, half the rikishi you quoted from Kintamayama's original post weren't even really established as makuuchi regulars if in makuuchi at all, never mind the Onami brothers. A lot of it might just be down to Arashio though, since they usually seem to be the host for these large get togethers.

Even makushita can come for degeiko - without a sekitori apparently, else Ichinojo would have been mentioned, Tamawashi on the other hand trains with the few lower ranks at his heya like last basho - it had paid off.

Tamawashi at the heya, after 9 with ms Tamashoho, 5 with 2 jd/jk rikishi at the same time

Tamanoi on the 24th has installed a monitor like amazumo uses for quite a while, he learned it from his high school sempai who is coach at Nittaidai, recording keiko with a smartphone - Tatsunami-beya has installed it in June, more and more heya use this

Tohakuryu did 11 bouts with Toyodai kohai Hatsuyama and Minato-beya's Akitoba who came for degeiko

And ichimon are unimportant, unless it is a rengo-geiko, there are other connections between heya. Most degeiko for this basho was between different ichimon.

He had surgery after the Nagoya basho, his kyujo in Aki was because he was trying to rehab in time and realized at the last minute he wasn't in any condition to come back.

He's recovered enough that he was able to participate in the recent tour and lend his chest to other sekitori, but he apparently hasn't ruled out sitting out Kyushu as well if he's not fully recovered.

New Makuuchi Atamifuji trained at home today- 64 bouts.. "Even though I'm a sekitori now, I am trying to do the number of training bouts I did while I was ranked in the lower divisions. 60 is about usual ," he said calmly. Isegahama Oyakata was telling him to go for the left upper arm hold, but he failed to do so, causing the Oyakata to become very angry. "I looked shameful today. I just couldn't get it done, although I was told what to do.. It's inexcusable.." he said. His famous smile returned after the session though. "I love sumo and I have been doing sumo while laughing since I was in Senior High school.. I'll be up in Makuuchi next basho and I wonder if I will be able to show some coolness.." he summed. Was in my favorites list, and that just cemented that..

Ura is reaching the final stretch of preparations. Today he faced the lower rankers of his heya and was 12-1. He is already in Fukuoka. The weather there is milder than in Tokyo. "It's really nice," he agreed. "Every year, the head of the koenkai here brings me fresh fish from the market so every meal is really a delight.. " he said. Fukuoka has always been good to him. Last year he had 10 wins and got his first special prize. Other than the one time he was kyujo, he always got his kachikoshi in Kyushu. "It feels refreshing to be here and the wind is nice. I prefer cool weather," he added. He had three kachikoshi and two makekoshi this year. "Yeah, I'm a bit unstable.. I'm not getting stronger either. I feel I have been gambarizing well, though. Deep inside, I feel I am really doing well but people around me quite vocally think I should gambarize more," he said. Still, he agrees that he should aim for sanyaku. "People in Fukuoka are cheering me on to go higher. I agree I need to do that. I hope to fight the 15 days without injury. It's all about doing that, right?" he summed.

34 years old Maegashira 4 Sadanoumi trained at his heya's Fukuoka lodgings today, facing Myougiryuu and Hiradoumi and going 7-12 and then lent his chest to the lower rankers  doing butsugari.. "I'm in much better shape than I imagined. The basho is getting closer and I'm looking forward to receiving much love from the fans (he's a local boy)," he said. He's dong a lot of fundamentals as well, working on the speed of his tachiai. "I always think about that," he said.

Kiribayama underwent surgery in both nostrils to remove some puss at the end of September, it was divulged today. It won't stop him from entering Kyushu. "I no longer wake up in the middle of the night with a stuffy nose.. My sumo consists of hitting with my head, so I hope to overcome the fear.." he said. He had 21 bouts against Makushita and under rikishi from his heya today. "There really is no way of knowing who will win the yusho. I think I have a chance.." he summed.

Myougiryuu turned 36 a month ago. Yesterday, he trained at home with Sadanoumi and Hiradoumi and was 12-2. "My usual pace.. I'm using different techniques but the foundations are the same. I'm not suffering from any major injuries, and I'm not tricking my way to winning.. I'm able to train as I planned and I'm healthy, regardless of my age. Tamawashi's yusho was a great stimulus. I feel I want to face the strong guys at the top," he said, his eyes becoming two small slits.

Kotonowaka trained at the Fukuoka lodgings of Sadogatake beya today. He is currently in second place (46) after Wakatakakage (49) with most wins in the calendar year. "There's not much I can do with that, as it is not entirely up to me. I'll just take the bouts a day at a time," he said. He faced Kotoshouhou and Kotoekou and was showing good form, 21-3. "Not only the number of bouts are important - I want to do worthwhile training. It would be good if I could do that. My body is moving well. I want to be a bit more precise," he said. He showed a lot of oshizumo today, showing he is becoming more and more versatile. Yesterday, the boys went out to the beach for some fishing and caught a few, then cooked them. "I am very good at eating. I impatiently waited for them to return .." said the non-fisherman Kotonowaka

Sekiwake Houshouryuu trained at home today, 17 bouts. 13 of them against Meisei, going 7-6. It was a fierce session and when they fell together at some point he demanded to know who won.. When he was told he had lost he said "aah, shit.."

"We both take our training seriously. If you don't go all out in training you can't do well during a basho. I've established myself in sanyaku and I think I had a good year but it still isn't over.. I want it to end well so it would really be a good year, " he said.

Kyokutaisei will be back after 4 basho kyujo, since mid Haru - at jk5. He's scheduled to fight same rank Fujinonami on day 1. He's the 2nd ex-makuuchi rikishi after Masunoyama to fight in jonokuchi. In preparing for the basho he had been to Miyagino-beya for degeiko.

Also back after 4 (but full) kyujo basho is ex-juryo Asashiyu, at jd60w - last on the dohyo in January
