It's on! After back-to-back cancellations due to the pandemic (last year's at the eleventh hour), the Fuji TV-sponsored one-day tournament is finally happening again this Sunday.

No sales of heya specialty chanko varieties apparently this year (although eating and drinking is allowed in general), but other than that the event programme has essentially been brought back as it was the last time it ran:

  • Photo opportunities with sekitori (participants not available yet)
  • "Old boys" exhibition matches between retired rikishi (lineup not available yet)
  • Jinku by Kitadaichi, Yuki, Kotonofuji, Mihamaumi, Tochigidake and Kototaisei
  • Shokkiri featuring Wakazakura & Tochimitsuru and gyoji Shikimori Tomokazu

The day will start off around noon (arena opening 11:00) with action on the dohyo, comprising a three-section juryo tournament that will see 26 juryo rikishi battle down to a tomoe-sen final. Followed by the aforementioned entertainment extracurriculars, it'll finally be time for the top division tournament around 14:30 when the TV broadcast picks up. 39 makuuchi rikishi will be in action there.

Takakeisho shouldn't have gone into a belt battle with Daieisho in the 3rd round

Asanoyama lost in the 2nd round to the later yusho winner Kitanowaka in the juryo tournament and wants to go for the makuuchi yusho next time o

Hakuho already was the main commentator for the event, would have been hard to look good in the proper attire after an OB bout

In the Juryo tournament, Asanoyama lost to Kitanowaka (who went on to win the tourney) in the second round. "It's too bad, but I am aiming to take the Makuuchi tournament yusho next year," said Asanoyama.

Suspended and Juryo-bound Ichinojou was there as well, losing in the second round to Kotonowaka. "I've been training all this time but I'm suffering from back pains, feels like a hernia..I want to return to Makuuchi in one basho," he said. After the problems with his Oyakata, he made it a point to answer every question he was asked with "I'm OK with my oyakata" or "I will be consulting with my Oyakata".

"When will you be arriving in Osaka?"

"I will be consulting with my Oyakata".

etc.

Thanks for posting the recap @Kintamayama

Anyone else come away with the feeling that most of the bouts in the one-day tournament seemed to have been fought at about 70% intensity? Especially evident in the soft (i.e. low impact) tachiais, total absence of harite, and lack of dramatic throws at the bales, perhaps? Is there some kind of tacit mutual agreement in place, along the lines of, “Let’s have fun but not knock any teeth out today, guys”?

I'm not a long-term fan by any means, but from the few tournaments I've seen it seems like it's the standard thing. "Let's not get hurt for these shenanigans" kinda deal.

Very evident in the Daieisho v Takakeisho bout with both men concentrating hard on keeping the shoves down to chest level.

Agree.  Except for the final, when the 2.5 M is directly on the line, why bother?  [A couple of the matches looked like shokkiri -- I expected the wrestlers to wave to the crowd].

I don't know if I mentioned this in previous threads about the cancellation, but are they really going to say that the 45th and 46th were canceled, instead of saying that the 2023 version is the 45th?

NHK counts the Charity sumo properly, Fuji announced the 45th and 46th, they didn't take place, but are counted.

Edit: Including this
