Ichinojo Concerns

So, we were promised he would be dealt with after the basho. Nothing so far. Is it possible the Kyokai want this to quietly go away by burying it in time?

So far they dealt with him by using him as the PR character for the new sekitori photo shoot attached tickets at the Hatsu basho

Or it's complicated enough that the NSK can't handle it quickly. That would gel with what we heard; after all, alcoholism alone isn't a sackable offence.

The kyokai usually deals with stuff quite quickly.. Or at least goes public with early investigations.

So either it's really good news, or really bad news.

There's no worse news than being expelled from sumo, and we've had numerous such incidents over the years and most of these were dealt with swiftly.

Given that he was allowed to compete in Kyushu where in most such cases he would have been minimally suspended while an investigation is ongoing, in addition to reports that the contact with his Okamisan was "incidental," I'm inclined to believe that he's going to be allowed to remain.

If I've read all this right, Ichinojo got the lawyers in before the Kyokai became involved. That may be the only reason this is all taking longer than usual.

Ichinojo gets one basho suspension, as usual for violating the Corona guidelines, but quite lenient. He was out two times while it was not allowed in November 2020 and August 2021.

The oyakata gets a 30% pay cut for three months because he hadn't reported it at the time.

The violence was more than five years ago, unintentional and the okamisan doesn't want him punished.  https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2022/12/26/0015921465.shtm

damn 5 years? Wonder who leaked now, or if he's getting worse now which is why it's all come out

So it was five years ago? That puts a rather different spin on things. But the drinking problem has continued up to the present day?

Not a very satisfying conclusion, since it doesn't address the apparent breakdown of the relationship between Ichinojō and Minato. Any bets this is going to slow burn on for a bit?

Five years ago with the okamisan incident. The covid violations were a year and two years ago. Why is this all coming out now? The whole thing is really bizarre.

Sometimes people get lazy with secrets after enough time passes. There could be a specific, reasoned leak at play, but it's possible people who know just let slip here and there and finally someone willing to make news of it caught wind.

Well, I can’t help speculating, but the enduring factor here is the money owed to Ichinojō by Minato, and the introduction of lawyers on Ichinojō’s side suggests they were at an impasse for some time. Eventually Minato reported the matter to the kyōkai as he couldn’t resolve it himself; at this point Ichinojō’s past misdeeds were brought to light and into the view of the tabloids.

This also leads me to think that, had his COVID curfew infractions not been exposed coterminously with all this other drama, he’d have probably gotten away with it.

Abi with 3 and Asanoyama with 6 basho suspension plus 5 and 6 months 50% pay cut had lied to the committee, Ichinojo answered correctly and showed remorse,  was out only for a short time in the same Mongolian restaurant in Tokyo, was not invited by sponsors and thus not in contact with many outsiders - that made him get away with a one basho suspension. http://www.sanspo.com/article/20221226-X2RYGQINERPPXOKSUZM3YESYSQ/

Heading to the rijikai today - he apologized there with "sumimasen" when they told him the sentence

The reporting made it seem like he was a repeat aggressive offender and that another incident occurred recently. If the 'violence' was a one-time thing and from years back it's still unpleasant but doesn't seem as dark of a situation.

During Kyushu, Ichinojou did not eat at the heya, so although the violence may have occurred 5 years ago, the discord is definitely alive and well.  I really don't get how the Kyokai totally side-stepped this issue, "talk to me through my lawyers" notwithstanding.

What if the real issue is something the kyokai don't control as in "YOU OWE ME THE MONEY, MINATO! PAY UP!"
