In 2022, one yusho was won by a Yokozuna, two by Sekiwakes and the last three by rikishi outside of the sanyaku!

How about in 2023?

Which ranks do you think will win the Makunouchi yushos in 2023?

Please write your predictions in the comments below.

Please also mention which rikishi (give names!) and their ranks you think will actually win the yushos (and how many).

This will be used as a tie-breaker (if needed) to decide the yusho winner for this poll at the end of the year.

Operating entirely off of instinct with little to no forethought, I'm going to say...

January - Takakeisho (Ozeki), March - Hoshoryu (Sanyaku) - May - Asanoyama (Maegashira), July - Terunofuji (Yokozuna), September - Terunofuji (Yokozuna), November - Kotonowaka (Maegashira)

1 Abi, 1 Hoshoryu (S/K)

For the maegashira shots in the dark:  Kotonowaka and Hoshoryu (again).

I have to say, I nearly picked Wakatakage to win one last year. Having underestimated him, apparently, I'll give him a nod this year.

Wakatakage 1 as an S

Abi - 2, one as an S, one as an O

Takakeisho  - 1 as an O

Hoshoryu  - 1 after his promotion to O

and, after going conservative for part of my 2023 selection. Here we go...

Hokuseiho - 1, as my sole M prediction

I think Terunofuji could be done, although I hope I'm wrong.

2 Terunofuji, 1 Takakeishō, 1 each from Hōshōryū, Mitakeumi, and Wakatakakage at sekiwake, and Asanoyama from hiramaku.

Edit: Leave off the Mitakeumi yūshō.

Bold prediction, at least arithmetically.

Teronofuji will get one at the end of the year, Takakeisho will get one, and newly minted Ozeki Hoshoryu will get one. He will also get one as sekiwake. Kotonowaka will get one at sekiwake, and as a pure guess Ryuden will get one from about M7

Poll closed.

2 or 3 yushos by a Yokozuna is a VERY low prediction compared to previous years - and this year it is Yokozunas AND Ozekis! I guess we are expecting a bit of a mix-up year.

The 1-3 yushos by the lower sanyaku would be higher than usual.

But what is REALLY high is the number of yushos (1 or or 3 even) predicted for non-sanyaku rikishi in Makunouchi.

The yushos of 2023 were as follows:-

Jan - Ozeki Takakeisho
Mar - Sekiwake Kiribayama (Kirishima)
May - Yokozuna-Ozeki Terunofuji
Jul - Sekiwake Hoshoryu
Sep - Ozeki Takakeisho
Nov - Ozeki Kirishima

So, no non-sanyaku yushos for this year! This is the first year without a lower division winner since 2017.

Anyway, four yushos were won by either the Yokozuna, or an Ozeki. Only Shatsume got this correct.

Two yushos were won by Sekiwakes (or Komusubis), as predicted by slightly over half of us, including Shatsume.

Not surprisingly, Shatsume was one of the two players who correctly predicted that no Makunouchi Yushos would be won by players outside of the sanyaku. So, it is very easy to award the yusho to @Shatsume.

However, looking at the comments, Shatsume 'only' got three of the winners correct, whereas Jejima got four! So, I will (with modesty) award Jejima a Gino-sho for this poll.
