Terutsuyoshi news

Translations courtesy of Herouth.

Terutsuyoshi was kyūjō from the jungyō, ostensibly for tonsilitis, but then was caught at a reptile show in street clothes recently. A source says he has already been disciplined internally, though it's not clear whether by Isegahama or the NSK.

It also says that he's actually secretly married already, and further that the reason for his zenpai last basho was apparently a worsening of his diabetes. He couldn't do any keiko before the basho.

Anyone picked up anything corroborating from the grapevine?

I already posted that this is a tabloid story - an exclusive for now - if there is something behind it, others will follow - cautioned by the NSK

A story with that pic that was deleted later had appeared before.

Tabloid Bunshun reports that Terutsuyoshi last jungyo on Oct. 28th was kyujo due to fever because of swollen tonsils, but was seen quite genki the next day, covering the mage - rikishi are obliged to show it and wear proper Japanese style attire when they meet with outside people.

The heya refuses to comment, the NSK apparently has cautioned him already.

Now he is again kyujo this jungyo - Bunshun assumes some improper secret behind it.

D'oh, my bad, should have checked. If the mods would be so kind as to merge it...?

Nothing to merge here, that was from the jungyo thread - a personal tread for Terutsuyoshi is always better, if it's a bigger story.

I've seen him train enough times to know he's no slacker and no troublemaker, but who knows?

He's been in sumo since he was 15, and maybe injuries and the grind of the lifestyle are beginning to take their toll.

This past October at the Fan Appreciation event, he was the one playing table tennis with the public.  He looked very happy and relaxed.  Maybe that experience exacerbated any feelings of restlessness or dissatisfaction he might be having over his lot in life.

Friday today reports about the Bunshun article, mentioned there is that Terutsuyoshi had registered his marriage to a friend of the daughter of Isegahama-oyakata in August, that he has snakes and lizards as pets in his apartment. The article concludes that because Harumafuji had given him special training to point him out to the media in 2017, working on having him get rid of his idleness and taking care of him, we need not worry for him next basho.

Officially, diabetes is the reason he gave for his 0-15 last basho today. He then went on to admit the marriage registration to a 31 year old "company management" (owns 3 restaurants) woman.

Terutsuyoshi himself said today it was diabetes. Today he trained with Atamifuji and Nishikifuji for about 30 bouts. "I'm pretty much ready but I still can't move forward well. I couldn't win at all last basho and it felt like I couldn't generate any power. Stuff I used to be able to do during a bout could not be done and I thought that was strange. My sugar level was over 400 and the insulin I shot during the basho was not able to control it. I got back from Kyushu and changed my medicine, and now i am better," he explained. He could have withdrawn mid-basho, but he didn't, scoring that shameful 0-15 record. "No good will come from becoming gloomy after losing all my bouts. If I get injured and lose all my bouts that would probably influence the next basho as well, but this isn't the same case. Whatever the record, win or lose, the fact I remained on the dohyo is something I can build on," he added. "As always I'll gambarize and hope to avoid injury-and return to the upper echelons soon," he summed.

So he didn't say anything about *why* his blood sugar was out of control.  That could easily be related to getting married.

Warui-naa. 400 blood glucose level is very high, can be life threatening in some cases.

Diabetes is hard to treat, but it can be controlled with proper medication, diet, and exercise. Wish him well!

Notice that he doesn't say that his bgl was 400, he says it was OVER 400, so it could be a whole lot worse.

If I said that I weighed over 200 pounds it would be the truth but not the whole truth.
