Recommended Posts

Most wins of the year went to Wakatakakage, awarded in Kyushu, the other main awards, best rikishi and best newcomer are presented on the dohyo at day 1 of the Hatsu basho.

An extra one comes from China  - today at the WEIBO Account Festival 2022 69th yokozuna Hakuho got a best athlete award https://www.nikkansports.com/entertainment/news/202212200000389.html

Miyagino was at the event: "Some day I'd like to go to China to present sumo"

One of these is not like the others—I wouldn't have pegged Kotonowaka as a big kimarite variety guy, his sumo looks fairly "meat and potatoes"

Looks pretty much "bread and butter" to me:

It's partly because he had a lot of wins this year, 55 compared to Terutsuyoshi's 31 (not including fusen) and Chiyoshoma's 38.

And now, most times of involved in bouts with kensho of more than a million yen- at least 34 banners, graded by win percentages.

1. Takakeishou- 4-0

1. Abi 2-0

3. Shoudai 2-1

4. Terunofuji 6-6

4. Mitakeumi 1-1

6 Daieishou 1-2

7. Wakatakakage 0-3

7. Houshouryuu 0-1

Kiribayama (0-1)

Endou (0-1)

Most kenshos in one bout- 57 on senshuraku of Nagoya Takakeishou - Terunofuji , then 53 in the Takakeishou-Shoudai bout on senshuraku of Aki.

Very late announcement this year, but after his yusho and the most wins of the year, with nobody (else) doing anything great this year, it could only be Wakatakakage who gets the Hochi best rikishi of the year award. http://hochi.news/articles/20221227-OHT1T51160.html?page=1

his brothers celebrate

and his tsukebito

I fully expected they skip the award because the year was so bad

the selection committee, with in the back Nomachi Mineko, ex-NHK Kariya, ex-YDC Miyata, in the front the Hochi top - after a hot discussion, Wakatakakage was voted for unanimously

I thought Hochi might award their pro sports grand awards again this year, which have a sumo category  - they skipped the awards the last 2 years due to Corona https://www.hochi.co.jp/award/prospo/

After the Japan pro sports awards vanished, this is the only remaining one for pro sports. The kokutai and many other things took place after 3 years again, but this maybe not.

Wakamotoharu is makuuchi newcomer of the year - at age 29 maybe the oldest ever wiki/大相撲幕内最優秀新人賞

going for sansho next year

Nomachi Mineko as the sumo chief in the NHK 5 o'clock news awarded these 2 two more awards: the 5 p.m. gino-sho for Wakatakakage (aim for the year: ozeki promotion) and the newcomer award for Wakamotoharu
