A magnificent seven shikona changes on this banzuke, all of the rikishi are changing from their family names.

The most notable change is courtesy of Kise-oyakata (former Maegashira Higonoumi), who has bestowed his own shikona on his deshi Inoue, a fellow Kumamoto native. The new Higonoumi also changes the given name.

A pair of changes from Fujishima-beya, where Suzuki is now Fujinoyama and Shinohara is now Tendozan.

Two changes also in Nishonoseki-beya - Takeoka is now Kirinryu, the first two kanji are a throwback to the old Nishonoseki-beya which was home to former Ozeki Daikirin and former Sekiwake Kirinji. Meanwhile, Nishihara is now Amao, honouring his home city of Amagasaki, and also makes a given name change.

Over in Hanaregoma-beya, November recruit Toriyama makes his banzuke debut as Kitanosho, presumably taken from a ruined castle of the same name which is found in his home city of Fukui.

Lastly to Musashigawa-beya where Wayama is now Hayanami.

Ms32w Inoue Tomohiro > Higonoumi Taro (肥後ノ海 太郎,  ひごのうみ たろう)
Ms43e Suzuki > Fujinoyama (富士の山,  ふじのやま)
Sd14w Wayama > Hayanami (早南嶺,  はやなみ)
Sd27e Takeoka > Kirinryu (麒麟龍,  きりんりゅう)
Sd37w Shinohara > Tendozan (天道山,  てんどうざん)
Sd89e Nishihara Takato > Amao Takeshi (尼王 猛獅,  あまおう たけし)
Jk14w Toriyama > Kitanosho (北乃庄,  きたのしょう)

There are also two name changes among the gyoji ranks. I expected Kimura Ryosuke to switch from his real given name to mark his Juryo promotion on this banzuke. However I'm quite surprised by the change of both names for Shikimori Tomotaro.

Kimura Ryosuke > Kimura Kozaburo (木村 幸三郎,  きむら こうざぶろう)

Shikimori Tomotaro > Kimura Katsunosuke (木村 勝之介,  きむら かつのすけ)

As in you believe it should be like ozeki, where they're ordered by their results on the previous basho? It feels like they're treating sekiwake, first and foremost, the same as toriteki. Nobody gets a demotion with a KK. A KK sekiwake will NOT fall down the order.

I have zero skills with the DB, and doubt this would even be catalogued in a searchable manner, but anyone know when the last time we had a set of brothers together in the junior sanyaku ranks? Am I correct to assume Takahanada/Wakahanada?

605 rikishi on the banzuke, one less than in Kyushu. 44 heyas. Kokonoe beya with the most rikishi for the 6th straight basho with 26, followed by Sadogatake with 25,  Takasago with 24, Kise with 22,  Tamanoi and Hakkaku with 21,  5 heyas tied for 7th place with 19: Sakaigawa, Dewanoumi, Takadagawa, Miyagino and Tatsunami, then Isegahama and Oitekaze with 18. These last two are also tied for the most sekitori (6, both with 4 Makuuchi and 2 Juryo, which means that a third of their rikishi are sekitori..). Tokiwayama beya can also boast that a  third of their rikishi are sekitori, 3 of 9.  Nishikido has 100 % sekitori, as the only rikishi there is Mitoryuu.. Then it's Kasugano, Shikihide and Tokitsukaze with 17 rikishi each, followed by Musashigawa and Nishonoseki with 16, and Naruto with 15. Least rikishi - Nishikido and the newly established Ajigawa with one each, Kataonami with 4, Takekuma and Oshiogawa with 6, 13 heya in all have one-digit sekitori.

Unfortunately, inconsistency is the name of the game, as usual. Anyway, this change of approach only dates back to 2014. It remains a rather odd thing to put their foot down on and go against decades of previous decisions that (to my knowledge) nobody had ever raised any issues with.

It's been deemed important enough that it appears in the official Banzuke Topics (not up in English yet).

Previous pairs of brothers who reached sanyaku (order: older / younger):

Wakanohana (sanyaku debut 1951.09) / Takanohana (1970.09), no concurrent time in lower sanyaku
Sakahoko (1984.07) / Terao (1989.03), concurrent in 1989.03 and 1990.11
Wakahanada (1991.11) / Takahanada (1991.07), concurrent in 1992.03

Thank you! Clearly I need to check out the Banzuke Topics page more often, as that is very helpful. Much appreciated!

First time ever having both 4 Sekiwake and 4 Komusubi on a banzuke?

I believe it is. Can someone double-check?

Thanks! I overlooked that one in my quick sweep across the banzuke in the sumo database because of all the sanyaku rikishi listed at HD Sekiwake and HD Komusubi!

But, in combination with there also only being only one Yokozuna and one Ozeki on the banzuke it must be a unique banzuke, right? ;-)

Then the yokozuna as ozeki-(small below: yokozuna)

This time, Terunofuji marked as big yokozuna-smaller ozeki (right to left) o

Only 8 years after the yokozuna first appeared on the banzuke, with 2 basho a year, so not many possibilities for a banzuke like this time. Not even another occurrence of one yokozuna and one ozeki before the 2 basho then, the other Natsu 1897 - and no mention of a 3rd time 4s-4k in the 64 years between.

Another fact: Kotonowaka I&II are the 6th time that father and son made it to sanyaku http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2022/12/26/0015920746.shtml

As grandson of Kotozakura in 3rd generation to sanyaku is a first, but it's not in direct father-son line - Oho will go for the next occurrence

Although Ōhō is also not descended from Taihō in the direct male line, right?

No; I believe Takatoriki married Taiho's daughter.

Basically we have yet to get three generations in the direct male line in sanyaku. In fact I don't think it's happened for makuuchi yet either, right? At most maybe the best chances are the Onami brothers or Kurohimeyama's family, but I seem to recall at least some of them failed to make it to makuuchi.

Confirmed, the shikona was decided by conferring with the shisho and the other deshi. Shibata Katsuie built Kitanosho castle 北ノ庄城 - Kitanosho added the 乃no from the shisho's Tamanoshima 玉乃島. This shikona marks him as representative of Fukui - Fukui shimbun will surely follow his progress.

Kotonowaka - dad wants him to graduate soon from Kotonowaka: the change to Kotozakura is planned for ozeki promotion from the start

Kamatani, starting as Kotokamatani. Maybe on juryo promotion, maybe earlier he'll become Kotonowaka II, if he makes it to ozeki Kotozakura II, the oyakata has reserved these 2 names for him.
