He let other rikishi stand in a circle around the combatants, touching them meant a loss. As there were injuries, in the mid of the Edo period the dohyo encircled by tawara (rice bales) was created. Nobunaga introduced gyoji to watch over the bout and clearly recognize the winner, which often had been a reason for debate. To two rikishi, who fought in a bout he especially liked, he gave a reward: the one who had entered the dohyo from the east side he allowed to have a family name: Higashi (east), the other one of course received the name Nishi (west). This is said to be the start of the east-west division in sumo. Episode 4 is all over the news, because that's where he orders Ieyasu to do sumo with him. I don't know how accurate they tried to reenact the sumo of the samurai at that time, but the fight was more of an MMA fight, in a cage, with Hideyoshi as gyoji - the sumo the samurai practiced to prepare for real battle was of course another than what we know as sumo, more like Nomi-no-Sukune kicking Taima-no-Kehaya to death in the first recorded sumo bout. This year's taiga has not much to do with history, but it's about the most famous period in Japanese history, so it may be worth watching.
