What was today in sumo

Recommended Posts

Feb. 4th has 2 remarkable events:

In 2010 Asashoryu announced his intai after scandal http://www.nikkansports.com/general/news/202302030000654.html

In 1967 ex-Chiyonoyama set up the heya name board and started Kokonoe-beya in Takasago-ichimon, leaving Dewanoumi (the split dated to Jan. 31st), with 10 rikishi, including ozeki Kitanofuji  http://www.47news.jp/news/8899161.html

photo.jpg

In the following Haru basho, Kitanofuji got his first yusho and another Chiyonofuji was among the first new recruits for the new heya http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Banzuke.aspx?b=196703&heya=40&shusshin=-1

A fun fact I know about this, for Brazil's entering, the first brazilian sekitori Ryuko was as accompaning rikishi but he was not a sekitori anymore at the time, he was in Makushita, but he was there in formal kimono and using the oichomage. Cool stuff.

Thank you - I'd use a SumoDB query for this, though.

I rather meant which rikishi got assigned to each nation in Nagano's opening ceremony.

Oh that makes more sense, given the thread. Sorry!

I remember seeing one before but i couldn't access it now :-(

Is there a list of rikishi/nation pairings? Couldn't find any.

The English press guide from the 1998 Nagano Olympics is online in pdf format at

999 The Opening Ceremony Media Guide

On pages 36-38 is a list of the nations: each nation is led by a rikishi.  Asterisks indicate a rikishi leading his home country, thus ...
Argentina -- Hoshitango (Ms22w)
Brazil -- Ikemori (Ms39e)
Korea -- Ganyu (M9e)
Mongolia -- Kyokushuzan (J13e)
USA -- Musashimaru (O)
Japan -- Wakanohana (O)

We had a link to such list from the web posted in some old thread, but maybe only in Japanese, like on this page https://sooda.jp/qa/389156

Looking through the English press guide was like viewing a time capsule of the late 90's: Midori Ito, Seiji Ozawa, Jim Steinman, Moriyama Ryoko, Andrew Lloyd Webber, etc.  And the descriptions of each part of the Opening ceremonies was excellent, including explanations of the Sumo-related activities.

100 years ago the great Kanto earthquake severely damaged the old kokugikan and one of the many who died was the 11th Otowayama, former juryo Umegaki - the kabu remained vacant for 7 years, with him listed as the holder.

The kokugikan was built in 1909, burnt down in 1917 and was destroyed a 3rd time in the bombings in 1945 o

Otowayama originally came from Kyoto-zumo, was juryo for one basho. He retired in May 1897 at age 40, opened Otowayama-beya, but it closed without having a sekitori and he transferred to Ikazuchi-beya - he was 66 when he died on Sep. 1st 1923, born Dec. 18th 1856

Not often, so likely not much - Feb. 29th, 1992 was the biggest ever shindeshi kensa, 160 new recruits: enough for 3 full years now, after Hatsu with the first yusho of Takahanada at the record young age of 19y5m. http://www.47news.jp/news/10586637.html

Now both a dream and a nightmare for the NSK:

Kyokutenho and Kyokushuzan on the left in a record breaking group of 6 Mongolians for Oshima-beya sumodb.sumogames.de/Banzuke.aspx?b=199203&heya=-1&shusshin=59

The worst ever Haru basho is now this basho: 27, the previous low was last year with 33 https://www.47news.jp/10589271.html
