Akinomaki 40,019 Posted September 1, 2023 (edited) 100 years ago the great Kanto earthquake severely damaged the old kokugikan and one of the many who died was the 11th Otowayama, former juryo Umegaki - the kabu remained vacant for 7 years, with him listed as the holder. The kokugikan was built in 1909, burnt down in 1917 and was destroyed a 3rd time in the bombings in 1945 o o Otowayama originally came from Kyoto-zumo, was juryo for one basho. He retired in May 1897 at age 40, opened Otowayama-beya, but it closed without having a sekitori and he transferred to Ikazuchi-beya - he was 66 when he died on Sep. 1st 1923, born Dec. 18th 1856 o the graves of Otowayama, his wife and daughter, who all 3 died in the disaster, at the Nanzo-in in Toshima ward, the temple of the successive Otowayama o o Edited September 1, 2023 by Akinomaki 4 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
