Suzuki (175cm,  153kg) is the 4th deshi of Ajigawa (Sponichi still hasn't noticed kenshu member Danylo) after Sogo Shigeki for Haru. Several heya had approached Suzuki, he chose Ajigawa-beya with the shisho from Aomori. Ex-Aminishiki came to Hirosaki by plane for the national high school select tournament on Feb. 11th to scout him, with work scheduled the next day. Suzuki was convinced by his enthusiasm that this is the shisho he wants to follow. He is from Kurihara, Miyagi, (like Tokihayate) started sumo in 3rd grade, as 2nd  year he was in the national best 8 with the team of his middle school. In Sanbongi high as 3rd year he won the Tohoku tournament and was in the best 8 at the national select Usa tournament, best 32 at the kokutai juniors.

The results of the shindeshi kensa will be announced on day 1 of the Natsu basho.

For his first appearance in a kimono, Nakamura from the shisho received a Hakata-obi, which new makushita get, and setta sandals, allowed for sandanme and above. The obi is one Kisenosato used while active, he kept it for a deshi with ozeki+ potential o .

with Kisenosato on the obi: the shisho had also thought about giving him this shikona. Onosato is not something open for grabs, the shikona of a famous ozeki, called a god of sumo - Nakamura starts with a modest hiragana no の, the ozeki had the katakana version ノ. There were voices like "for a new recruit it is far (10 years) too early to use that name". The shisho last month had phoned the family of Onosato in Aomori and explained the details of this name succession and has the consent - they want Nakamura to challenge for ozeki and yokozuna. He is a completely different type though, Onosato was just 164cm tall, below 100kg - Mainoumi type.

Banzuke-gai Raikisho and Chiyotensho are back in action, fighting each other in the first session of maezumo today, Raikisho winning with ease.

Suzuki's shikona continues the Ajigawa-beya naming convention with the first kanji from the shisho's shikona: 安大翔, surely Anosho (as in, An-o-sho, あんおおしょう). He defeated Shimamura easily in the second bout.

Karino quickly shoved out Kotohanashiro, who seemed to be asleep at the tachiai, in the last bout.

 

Regarding Shimamura, Arashio-beya reports that he just turned up at the heya one day wearing a suit, leather shoes and with a leather bag and neatly-parted hair. The person who answered the door thought he was a salesman. Shimamura said he enjoyed watching Wakatakakage's bouts last year and, as he is already 22, decided to take a chance and ask to join before he's too old.

Day 5 saw a late arrival as banzuke-gai Chiyotsurugi joined the fray, although that was his only appearance - he looked far from fit and gave Shimamura his first win. At least he won't have to worry about repeating his famous 0-8 result from the last time he was in maezumo. Results of the four sessions:
