NHK Sumo Announcer Funaoka Arrested for Breaking & Entering

Recommended Posts

Those who watch the Japanese NHK sumo broadcast will be familiar with the ever-present youthful announcer, who can often be seen conducting the yusho interview.

He was arrested on suspicion of breaking & entering into a fellow female announcer's home. Afterward, he tried to escape the home by jumping from the third floor. He sustained minor injuries, spend two nights at the hospital, and was arrested. Funaoka has a wife and two kids.

It's safe to say we won't be seeing or hearing Funaoka on the sumo broadcast anytime soon.

Since yesterday this is clotting the sumo news search, twice as many articles as actual sumo news. Seems the wide shows today are full of it.

An NHK newsroom insider tells Josei Jishin (a magazine) that,  "after a three months' suspension, he (Funaoka) will probably transferred to a position that involves no TV screen time."

The proven old adage. If you can't see it, it doesn't exist.

Thoses sources were wrong after all. He has been instructed to resign, effective 28th of April. It's a slightly lighter punishment than disciplinary dismissal, as it comes with a severance package.

what an interesting culture difference compared to the USA. Voluntarily resignation, you get severance. Getting fired, you don't. Quite strange!

This is in fact an "involuntary" resignation, which is how it's a lighter punishment reputation-wise. Correspondingly, the financial punishment is lighter as well.

makes sense, sounds more like a negotiation then. The wording just threw me.

I'm far from being an expert here, but my impression is that these Japanese 'negotiations' with disgraced people are more to the tune of;

'Resign or have your life ruined.'

'Here's my resignation form, good sir.'

I think he got a good head start on the "life ruined" part through his original actions.
