The girl is from the local Ono agricultural high school. Maybe she watched keiko at the sumo club for inspirations for her poster for the sumo competition, like here one of the 6 female managers of the club

who also prepare the chanko

The club has only three 1st years as members at the moment, and only one, Hirakawa has previous sumo experience - only he had one win in the preliminaries at the interhigh last year.

Preparations for this year are under way - the club has a history of more than 80 years, with 2 time runner-up results at the interhigh. The last national interhigh taking place in Hokkaido was 36 years ago. The club is one of 4 sumo clubs at high schools in Hokkaido, the others are Hokkaido Sakae, Otaru Fisheries and Hakodate Fisheries high school, at which the 3 boys who made the countdown board are in the model construction club. Only the top 2 clubs can go to the interhigh, and the top 5 for the individual competitions, weight class etc. - the Hokkaido interhigh to decide that is in June in the same city.

Ex-member Yoshiki Fuse is the advisor of the club since last spring

Big Daiki Nishide of Wakayama is high school yokozuna. Nishide used his combination of size (looks around 180kg) and basic but technically proficient and stable yotsu sumo to breeze through the competition. Nishide was previously middle school yokozuna + middle school Hakuho Cup champion, and earlier this year won a national high school event in Kariya. Needless to say, a very accomplished amasumo career for him.

Runner-up, only in his first year of high school, is Tottori's Nishimura, also a former middle school yokozuna + middle school Hakuho Cup champ. A great result for him at that age, and he won his matches fairly easily before running into the Nishide brick wall. I believe it wasn't since Onosato in 2016 that a freshman reached the finals.

Sho Igarashi, yet another middle school yokozuna and a winner of the Kanazawa national event recently, lost to Nishide in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, he had to be stretchered out with what looked like a knee injury after losing in the team portion.

And in the team competition, Saitama Sakae takes their first yusho in any national event since 2018, beating defending champs Tottori Johoku 4-1 in the final (with Tottori not winning until the 5th match)

2nd year vs 1st year individual final - that must be rare

Also, Turbold from Kaiyo should learn some matters. Some very unnecessary late shoves and wild celebration.

Is it just me or does he look a bit like Nishonoseki?

Also, is there any significance in the ama yokozuna tsuna being tied in the Shiranui rather than the Unryū style?

Any pro plans?

A bit early for that, only one in the top 4 was in his 3rd year. Nishide (180cm, 160kg) had the aim to be yokozuna here in 2nd and also 3rd year, one aim accomplished, and after being yokozuna in primary and middle school, he said his aim for the future is to become yokozuna in ozumo, after going to university first (and have the other 2 yokozuna titles in his collection as well). But he had one loss in the preliminaries against over 80kg lighter Saito from Takudai Koryo and just barely made it to the main event. This year he won the national select tournament in March and at the weight class tournament in May, the word championships preliminaries. He'll be there in October to aim for juniors heavy weight world champion. And he'll aim for the top 4 at the All Japan in December, to be equal with Goeido(Takekuma), who reached that as 3rd year.

But the one who decided the yusho for Saitama Sakae, 2nd year Saito, is the younger brother of sd yusho Wakaikari, dad Kabutoyama was there in Hokkaido to watch and was delighted - so he very likely will follow his brother for Haru 2025.

- and the last 2 middle school yokozuna

20230807s00005000228000p_thum.jpgo

Last time was 2005 1st year Yamaguchi (Daikiho) vs. 2nd year Lee (Tochinowaka), but then the 1st year won. 1st years as runner-up were in Heisei so far Shiraishi (Tohakuryu) in 2012 and Nakamura (Onosato) in 2016.

The last 2nd year high school yokozuna was Ochiai, at the New year ganjitsu-zumo replacement tournament after the interhigh was cancelled, the last at the interhigh was Yoshida in 2008.

Team 3rd Goshogawara

Hasegawa turns this into a win against Saitama's Saito in the sf, the only win for his team there - and he's the only 3rd year to finish 3rd in the individuals

img_23fc5914f4332d18daf05e0cbd5cc2a9840342.jpgo

100kg winner Kudo from Tairadate high was also the first winner in the 100kg category when weight class tournaments were introduced in 2021. o  He also had the only win for his team against Saitama Sakae in the qf, against Saito.

Looking around the official site https://www.koukousoutai.com/2023soutai/, I found that I never had looked there after the event was finished and so far missed the result reports, with pics - really excellent work - for last year https://www.koukousoutai.com/2023soutai/configbox/report/recordreport_12.pdf

older reports

2022 https://www.koukousoutai.com/2022soutai/configbox/report/recordreport_12.pdf

2021 https://www.koukousoutai.com/2021soutai/configbox/report/recordreport_2_05.pdf

Also search by athlete, by school and by prefecture - e.g.  Dergerbat: https://www.ihresult.com/#athlete/23SMM14004

but you have to make the input デルゲルバト
