Chartorenji 237 Posted March 11, 2023 That's probably it for Yoshinofuji. A low ringer, most known for getting concussions I think twice (September of 21 and I think another) falling off the dohyo. Kotofuno and Michihaya are both short of 1 year as a pro and might be retiring here due to how new they are. Michihaya is a surprise, had him ranked 7th out of the 35 recruits in the big May debut class (though tbf I overrated Noguchi and the worse Hayashi twin)

Akinomaki 40,622 Posted March 13, 2023 NHK reported that Futagoyama was scheduled as shimpan for juryo, but left for hospital with back pain after his jonidan shift, ex-Tamanoshima replaced him.
Yubinhaad 11,712 Posted March 13, 2023 Ahead of Day 3, one rikishi begins his basho a little late, but two others withdraw. Entering: Sd47w Kaigo Withdrawing: Jd11w Yusui - took a hard fall from the dohyo on Shonichi, he had to be helped away. Thanks. I noticed him struggling to mount the dohyo for a mono-ii, shortly after that he got up and left. Ajigawa, who was in the South-West seat, took over the East side seat for the rest of that shift. 1
Yubinhaad 11,712 Posted March 15, 2023 Three withdrawals from the lower divisions ahead of Day 5: Sd87w Daikinryu - looked like he injured his already-wrapped left knee when he dropped from the dohyo in his loss today. Jd2e Daishomune - left knee was badly twisted underneath him as he fell to an uchigake, hopped off the dohyo and helped away. Yubinhaad 11,712 Posted March 18, 2023 Press reporting Ozeki Takakeisho as kyujo from Day 7 due to medial meniscus injury to the left knee, believed to have happened in his bout against Shodai on Day 3. Nishikigi will get the fusensho. 5
Koorifuu 1,003 Posted March 19, 2023 We'll probably see Dewanojo on this list shortly - that was a grimace of agony if I ever saw one. His arm appeared to be damaged when surviving Ohata's shitatenage attempt on the tawara.

His arm appeared to be damaged when surviving Ohata's shitatenage attempt on the tawara. To his credit, he won the bout, too. But yeah, that looked bad for the big man. Fortunately, now that he is in Makushita, it’s easier to watch his fights if you miss them the first time around. I am a proud Dewanojo fan.
Yubinhaad 11,712 Posted March 19, 2023 Ahead of Day 9, one rikishi begins his basho but three more have to withdraw. Entering: Sd47e Haruminato Withdrawing: Ms12w Tochiseiryu Ms52w Chiyodaigo - limped away with some kind of left leg injury in his bout today. His arm appeared to be damaged when surviving Ohata's shitatenage attempt on the tawara. Looked like a shoulder muscle injury when his arm was forced behind as he threw Ohata with a kotenage. If it's not serious he might try and tough it out, we'll find out on Day 10 whether he turns up for his bout or not.
Yubinhaad 11,712 Posted March 20, 2023 Press reporting M4e Onosho as kyujo from Day 9, apparently due to a knee injury sustained on Day 7. Hokutofuji will collect the fusensho.
Kintamayama 45,208 Posted March 20, 2023 (edited) Ounoshou- Certificate says - Bilateral medial meniscus injury, right old posterior cruciate ligament injury- 2 months to heal. "Right knee was injured during keiko, both knees meniscus injuries - old injuries that have deteriorated. Today, doing sumo is impossible, but he is saying he wants to re-enter. We shall see," said his Oyakata. Edited March 20, 2023 by Kintamayama 1 3
Yubinhaad 11,712 Posted March 23, 2023 Ahead of the final round of lower division action, three rikishi join the basho at last, but three more withdraw: Entering: Jd94w Kotofuno Jk4w Nakaishi Jk10e Motokiyama (trivia note: his kyujo last basho ended his run of 44 consecutive basho in the Jonidan ranks, which was the longest active streak) Withdrawing: Ms19w Higonoumi - something went bang in his left knee when he braced it on the tawara in his loss today, he was taken away in the wheelchair. Jd45e Tochihayate Jd101w Kyonosato - limped off the dohyo after his loss on Day 11, seemed like a knee injury. Assuming they aren't retiring, the following rikishi will drop off the banzuke after not competing this time: Jk5w Chiyotsurugi Jk6w Chiyotensho Jk10w Yoshinofuji Jk11e Ryubumaru With no maezumo it's impossible to know if any of the current banzuke-gai rikishi will take advantage of the free pass back onto the banzuke, but I do know that Chikunokura and Hokutoshio won't be, they retired before the basho, danpatsu-shiki pictures will be in the intai thread in due course. 3

Seiyashi 4,098 Posted March 25, 2023 (edited) Horse's mouth: Right anterior cruciate ligament injury among other injuries he' been carrying this basho. I can't read the format of a Japanese medical certificate well enough to parse it for now, but he's done for the basho, as the tweet says he'll be back for Tōkyō (i.e. Natsu). Chartorenji 237 Posted March 25, 2023 terrible luck. Just is one win away from Kachi Koshi. Guess the dream will be 5 Sekiwake instead of 6.

The certificate states right anterior cruiciate ligament injury, right lateral meniscus injury, bone contusion, and right lateral collateral ligament injury; three months of rest required.
I am the Yokozuna 193 Posted March 25, 2023 Does not look good by the certificate - right ACL injury, right meniscus injury, right lateral collateral meniscus injury. Three months to heal at this time, need for further scans and tests. Hope he can recover soon enough.

It took me about 5 months to fully recover; if his ACL is not torn, he is looking to a similar recovery timeline, I would guess.

Yeah, it looks like he secured his salary for the next two months and then pulled out. Very strange to pull out after a win and with only 7, but it's not like 8 would really help him much towards becoming Ozeki if this is an actual issue.
