dada78641 884 Posted April 17, 2023 Apparently Terunofuji now has a website, as announced on Twitter: https://terunofuji-official.jp/ I'm not aware of any other active yokozuna having had a website like this, aside from small things like personal blogs (like the one Hakuho had). This is a full on professionally made marketing site for just him. But then I honestly haven't looked into this that much so let me know if I'm wrong about that. There's not much to see there now though. There's one single video, and one single photo, and both of them show a "you must log in" error when you try to click on them. At first I thought that was a mistake but it seems to be intentional, it's designed as a paid members-only space, ¥1100 per month or ¥10000 per year, with a "premium" version for three times that amount. 3
Akinomaki 40,622 Posted April 17, 2023 (edited) I think Hakuho had something similar. This is not Terunofuji's personal site but that of his koenkai: they look for members and provide extra contents for those web members. Tabloid Asahi geinou reports that NSK people were astonished about this move and the opinion there is: "Definitely a move towards going independent after intai. It's highly unlikely that he takes over Isegahama-beya, because the usual procedure is that Tateyama (Homarefuji) takes over, who is most liked by the young rikishi. Terunofuji took the shisho's name for his real Japanese name, but their relationship is not that good. He doesn't like the shisho's mammonism. And he has a kabu in reach." The talk is he tries to scout kohai from Tottori Johoku as uchi-deshi, but failed to get Ochiai - and he even is said to have tried to get Nakamura - this alone makes it a fantasy story, but usually some true part is in there somewhere. http://www.asagei.com/excerpt/256450

I assumed their relationship would be very strong given his unique career trajectory and the quotes where he thanks Isegahama for pushing him to keep going, but you never know really. I'm not sure why the word is being used here as opposed to something simpler like "greed". It usually has a religious connotation to it, that someone is worshipping wealth instead of God, and I've not ever seen it used outside of a Christian context. Or is the entirely wrong word used here? I'm not in any position to judge Isegahama's potential lust for wealth, but it seems rather odd. The term used was 拝金主義 haikinshugi, money worship, I have no idea of the origin of the word, originally Japanese or just a new word derived from the western concept. And it is just a label the tabloid put on Isegahama - where they got that from is their secret.
since_94 650 Posted April 22, 2023 Here I was thinking ‘mammonism’ had to be some kind of reference to certain rikishis’ upper body physiques…
