AFAIR he'll not stay, but head back home to train future prospects in his own dojo, right?

Kaioshoryu 63 Posted May 18, 2023 According to georgian media, Tochinoshin has retired. https://agenda.ge/en/news/2023/1948
Golynohana 321 Posted May 18, 2023 "In 2007 he became the second native of Georgia, and the fourth non-Japanese overall, to be promoted to yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo. In 2009, set a record for most victories after winning 86 out of 90 bouts, and repeated the feat in 2010, when he established the second-longest winning streak in sumo history." Kaioshoryu 63 Posted May 18, 2023 Let's hope it's just a bunch of nonsense that article. There were some other rumblings of intai on twitter, but it might just be smoke and no fire. We'll see.

It is a Georgian site. Maybe someone jumped the gun in posting it? Edited May 18, 2023 by Rocks

Maybe the Google link is bad because they took the story down to make changes and then reposted it. https://agenda.ge/en/news/2023/1948 Edited May 18, 2023 by Rocks
Rocks 1,809 Posted May 18, 2023 "In 2007 he became the second native of Georgia, and the fourth non-Japanese overall, to be promoted to yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo." The story still needs a bit o editing I think.

Athenayama 1,080 Posted May 18, 2023 Actually he might as well. I don't see him in a position to grab any win in Natsu.... And I'm saying it in a sad tone.

Katooshu 3,332 Posted May 18, 2023 Well, mixing Tochinoshin up with Hakuho is at least an improvement on the time chatgpt told me Tochinoshin is also known as John Gunning
Gurowake 4,104 Posted May 18, 2023 (edited) Regardless of the quality of the article or whether they jumped the gun publishing it, he might as well retire. He'll need to score a few wins to maintain a salary one more basho, and the effort that might take could easily be beyond him right now given his results this basho and last. He's had a long time in the top division, so I don't think one more basho of pay matters all that much (though his mochikyukin per basho is probably pretty high, probably more than his salary, given the yusho and longevity). It also would be somewhat fitting to have Ichinojo and Tochinoshin retire in the same basho, as the latter's second time through Juryo corresponded heavily with the former's first. Hoshotakamoto 259 Posted May 18, 2023 My mother passed 5 years ago on May 17th, the next day when I visited my dad he had grand sumo highlights on and I was very confused. We're watching what? Over the next few days I watched this Tochinoshin guy dominate, culminating in forcing out Hakuho on the way to his Ozeki promotion. Fascinating to learn I'd get *precisely* 5 years of Tochinoshin, from my introduction to the sport.

Akinomaki 40,774 Posted May 18, 2023 (edited) The Georgian performance on day 2 is what we usually see when a rikishi is having his last bouts, in a few hours the papers here will have it, if he isn't in the bout for day 6. Sanspo on day 4 mentioned that he can't use his left shoulder, injured at the Hatsu basho, he apologized to the fans for the bad sumo he's showing. o Day 5 Nikkan: It's no sumo, I didn't expect this before the basho. o Edited May 18, 2023 by Akinomaki

Asapedroryu 235 Posted May 18, 2023 When exactly does a rikishi that is demoted to makushita stops receiving his salary? On the Wednesday after the basho when the rankings are made? Only when the rankings are announced 2 weeks before the new basho? Somewhere else... Just wandering if he is going to announce it mid basho or leave it for later so the payments continue. As it is assumed he has stayed in Juryo so he can get some more extra money before going back to Georgia (I would the same), I guess he should wait for the last moment possible before leaving. I believe he would remain a salaried sekitori until the new banzuke comes out.
