I expected intai, but only after the basho. Sad to see him leave.

Anything known about his future plans? AFAIR he'll not stay, but head back home to train future prospects in his own dojo, right?

Do you have a source? Nothing on the kyōkai twitter, Nikkan, Hōchi…

"In 2007 he became the second native of Georgia, and the fourth non-Japanese overall, to be promoted to yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo.

In 2009, set a record for most victories after winning 86 out of 90 bouts, and repeated the feat in 2010, when he established the second-longest winning streak in sumo history."

Sounds like ChatGPT wrote that article :-)

If it's true, it hasn't been made public on any platform i know of yet. He was interviewed today and just pretty much said that his sumo is bad.

  • Thanks 1

Let's hope it's just a bunch of nonsense that article. There were some other rumblings of intai on twitter, but it might just be smoke and no fire. We'll see.

If you google Tochinoshin and Sort by Date the top result you get this. But clicking on the link gets an error. It is a Georgian site. Maybe someone jumped the gun in posting it?

Or has some inside information that he wasn't supposed to leak yet, till everything went through the proper channels. I'm going with this..

Actually, if you go to the Agenda.ge site and click Sport it's the top story. Maybe the Google link is bad because they took the story down to make changes and then reposted it.

The story still needs a bit o editing I think.

Yes, pretty bad.

Actually he might as well. I don't see him in a position to grab any win in Natsu.... And I'm saying it in a sad tone.

ChatGPT in Georgian must be a real pain.

Well, mixing Tochinoshin up with Hakuho is at least an improvement on the time chatgpt told me Tochinoshin is also known as John Gunning

Regardless of the quality of the article or whether they jumped the gun publishing it, he might as well retire.  He'll need to score a few wins to maintain a salary one more basho, and the effort that might take could easily be beyond him right now given his results this basho and last.  He's had a long time in the top division, so I don't think one more basho of pay matters all that much (though his mochikyukin per basho is probably pretty high, probably more than his salary, given the yusho and longevity).

It also would be somewhat fitting to have Ichinojo and Tochinoshin retire in the same basho, as the latter's second time through Juryo corresponded heavily with the former's first.

It's spreading. Here is a Russian-language article on another Georgian news site.

My mother passed 5 years ago on May 17th, the next day when I visited my dad he had grand sumo highlights on and I was very confused. We're watching what?

Over the next few days I watched this Tochinoshin guy dominate, culminating in forcing out Hakuho on the way to his Ozeki promotion.

Fascinating to learn I'd get *precisely* 5 years of Tochinoshin, from my introduction to the sport.

The Georgian performance on day 2 is what we usually see when a rikishi is having his last bouts, in a few hours the papers here will have it, if he isn't in the bout for day 6. Sanspo on day 4 mentioned that he can't use his left shoulder, injured at the Hatsu basho, he apologized to the fans for the bad sumo he's showing. o Day 5 Nikkan: It's no sumo, I didn't expect this before the basho. o

As I said, it's a matter of protocol. There are ways these things are done.

When exactly does a rikishi that is demoted to makushita stops receiving his salary? On the Wednesday after the basho when the rankings are made? Only when the rankings are announced 2 weeks before the new basho? Somewhere else...

Just wandering if he is going to announce it mid basho or leave it for later so the payments continue.

As it is assumed he has stayed in Juryo so he can get some more extra money before going back to Georgia (I would the same), I guess he should wait for the last moment possible before leaving.

I believe he would remain a salaried sekitori until the new banzuke comes out.
