Tochinoshin did much better than Kokkai though. I wonder what Kokkai, Baruto or Aran upto these days? Remembering Baruto, he was the best. Humble giant.

This is getting off-topic but for some reason, when I heard that Tochinoshin was retiring, I thought about Baruto, so I checked wikipedia.  Wikipedia indicated that he is currently an MP of the Estonian Riigikogu (Parliament), but that information is out of date. (Edited to make correction).

Political career

On September 7, 2018, Höövelson announced that he had joined the Estonian Center Party and had applied for the 2019 Estonian parliamentary election.[31] He ran for election in Harju and Rapla counties, and received 642 votes. Höövelson was elected to the Riigikogu after candidate Vladimir Arhipov declined his seat. One of his goals as an MP is to promote economic relations between Estonia and Japan.

You should rather check the forum, this is outdated

Baruto tried to get (re-)elected, but again lost at the elections yesterday o - this time he'll likely won't get as lucky as last time to become MP after all

His intai was obviously in the near future, but it is a bit surprising, that he retires in the middle of a basho. Nevertheless it is still sad news.

I was in the Kokugikan Natsu 2018 on day 12 when he beat Hakuho. It was the day i fell in love with sumo and Tochinoshin was right away my favorite rikishi.

I thank him for all the memories and wish him all the best and hope his future is bright.

The "no one beats Tochinoshin 26 times in a row" moment

Waiting for the movie.

Filmed in B/W. Three and a half hours of inner monologue. Against the backdrops of an abandoned McDonalds, an oil rig and a college graduation ceremony. All in super slow motion. Score by Philip Glass.

Many asked about the chances for Tochinoshin turning politician. He denied: "I don't want to become politician. So far all loved me because of my good image, become politician and you absolutely are hated because they do vile things. There's only one life, I don't want to be hated." o

1) Looking at his hatsu dohyo , I see Shohozan right in front of him

2) There seem to be five other Kasugano rikishi who came in with him; two (Aozora and Tochinoshima) remain.

Danpatsushiki - February 4th.

He will be going into business ("Royal Georgia"), importing Georgian goods (wine, honey). "There are a lot of Georgian foodstuffs and drinks that are really healthy. I want to make them famous in Japan, CEO? Nah, I'm a rank and filer..I will be living in Japan, and will visit Georgia here and there," he said, laughing.,  He is still going a lot to Kasugano beya. "Yeah, when I'm not busy I go there five times a week to train with the lads. I went with them to their training camp lodgings in Saitama and will be joining them in Nagoya as well.. Retired or not, I'm living the same life," he said, laughing again. He has already lost 30 kilos and his hair is greying. "Yes, I have quite a lot of grey hair on my sideburns and especially on my beard. I used to shave once a week and every five days during a basho, but I shave every 3-4 days now. If I don't, my beard looks totally white," he added. His advice to the three Ozeki contenders? "The first days are important - get 2-3 wins and you're in the right direction.  Even if you decide not to think about it, you always do when the Ozeki promotion is on the line. It's a battle against yourself, so you need to beat yourself. Wakamotoharu and Daieishou have their style, but anything can happen with Houshouryuu. Many fans like rikishi with their own style, but I'd say 70-80 percent of the fans love the guys who keep you guessing what they will come up with... His uncle Asashouryuu was one of those guys. I hope he makes it to Yokozuna soon," summed the retired Georgian.

Wow, he has lost weight..

Interesting. I had heard forever that he had planned to go move to Georgia upon retirement but in his own words, that's clearly not the case. Always makes me happy when a foreign-born rikishi decides to stay in Japan.

Choosing to stay in Japan surprises me also. Am I correct in thinking his wife and child/ren are in Georgia? Obviously they're used to living apart and if there's good money on the table, it's totally understandable, I just would have expected he'd be keen to move back with them.

How can he stay?  He doesn't have the citizenship. And what happened to his million-dollar mansion in Georgia?

If he wanted to live in Japan, staying in ozumo would be the easiest and most logical way to achieve it. And what is he going to export from Georgia - wine? Georgian food is great, but it is  not what I would call "exportable".

All of this makes me worry about his future. :-O

There are ways to stay that don't involve citizenship, and it could well be that money is easier made in Japan than Georgia. It appears to be a trend that the European rikishi really try to be a bridge between their home country and Japan.

Now whether the business model makes sense, that's a different matter altogether.

What ways - a business visa? Is it easy to obtain? He could have applied for citizenship and gotten it, his ozeki rank would have made it possible. Yes, Georgia is a poor country, and I don't imagine an easy way for a retired wrestler to make a lot of money there, but the sudden "export-import" angle smells of desperation. I hope he manages to succeed, but sumo excellence does not guarantee business acumen, unfortunately.

He probably already has permanent residency, which he would have easily qualified for as a result of having lived in Japan for so long.

Damn, I'm going to miss his danpatsushiki by just a few hours. I fly out of Japan on the morning of the 4th.

10 years with stable income provided to their immigration will normally grant permanent residency. He probably had this lined up or something. It is surprising that he is deciding to stay though

stable income

I see what you did there B-)

Jokes aside, won't they consider that he's now out of a job?

He likely got his permanent residency years ago, when he was making great money as a sekitori. Once you get it, you're basically all set regardless of what happens to your income situation afterward.

Permanent residency does what it says on the tin.   That's the point.  It's usually a precondition for citizenship applications (worldwide) outside some special cases.

Ok, if he got his PR a while back it makes sense. I thought he was just getting around to it now.

What’s the policy for retired rikishi without kabu continuing to train at/assist at a stable?

And who does the hair of retired rikishi without kabu before their danpatsushiki?
