Kintamayama 45,208 Posted May 23, 2023 Hidenoyama Oyakata (ex- Kotoshougiku) has announced that he will be establishing a new heya sometime next year. "I'm giving it my all towards this end and hope to bring up rikishi who will be outstanding in and out of the ring," he said. 6
Muhomatsu 245 Posted May 23, 2023 He has been collecting uchi-deshi lately. Keeps with Sadogatake tradition of only allowing ex-Ozeki (or higher) oyakata to branch out and form their own stable.
Asashosakari 19,427 Posted May 23, 2023 (edited) Seems like nearly everyone that's eligible to start a heya is actually doing so these days, and often pretty quickly after retiring from the dohyo; that wasn't the case back when the rules were more permissive (if we look at the people who would have fulfilled the same 60 makuuchi / 25 sanyaku standard for that era, I mean). I wonder if we just have a lot of high-profile guys right now who don't want to wait for their shisho to turn 65 (or otherwise become a successor), or if this is a concerted effort to not waste "heya slots". The only potential deshi that I saw mentioned on the Forum was Munakata (well, Kotomunakata), 15, who is 3-2 in his first basho.
