Godango 973 Posted June 1, 2023 Yeah wow, this explains why he didn't retire much sooner. Good for him.
Jakusotsu 5,892 Posted June 1, 2023 To be honest, I wasn't even aware of him still being on the banzuke.
Seiyashi 4,072 Posted June 1, 2023 (edited) The intai isn't surprising. The shūmei is. I wonder how this fits into his plan to succeed his father. Did that fall through, or is Ishiura simply the first of a line of Hakuhō deshi that will occupy Magaki when need be? Edited June 1, 2023 by Seiyashi

sumojoann 1,263 Posted June 1, 2023 So amazing how quickly a rikishi's fortunes can change. It seems like it was only yesterday that he was 11-4 as a Maegashira 12. But that was at the Jan 2022 basho and it's been all downhill since then. He first caught my eye in Sept 2014 when I attended the Aki basho. At that time he was in Makushita. He was exceptionally fast and utilized a great variety of kimarite. I just knew he was destined for great things. A more knowledgeable friend than me scoffed and assured me that Ishiura would never amount to anything because he was "too little." I was convinced that he belonged in Makuuchi and I was right. At his first basho in Makuuchi in Nov 2016, he made a big splash, winning 10 bouts in a row and receiving a special prize for Fighting Spirit. When I was invited to Miyagino-beya by a friend, I was introduced to Ishiura. He seemed stunned that I knew his name. He never said a word, just stared at me! He was so little that we just faced each other, eye to eye. Unfortunately, my taxi arrived before I had a chance to attempt to carry on an actual conversation with him. But from then on, I cheered for him every time he mounted the dohyo. His intai was a long time coming. I will never forget him.

Benihana 1,917 Posted June 1, 2023 Wow, that sucks hard. His condition must have been worse, than we all thought. But at least he's staying in sumo, congratulations on that! That kabu was even less expected, very nice.

With kabu being sparse, Ishiura might be the temporary place older until a more decorated Miyagino rikishi picks up the Magaki name and he will eventually leave for Tottori Johuku. And now he has an income to support his family (opposed to being a lower ranked rikishi on the banzuke).

Whilst I agree this is plausible, we're still looking at a looong time before any other of Hakuho's deshi is at that stage in his career, provided nature runs its natural course. It’s the type of injury where it doesn’t really have any effect on daily life, but if you continue contact sports (esp. American football) re-injury is highly likely and worse spinal cord damage is probable. Not retiring for so long kind of made me nervous he’d try to come back so it’s relieving news.

Probably depends how crocked 28 year old (29 this year) Enho is and how likely it is that he'll make it back. Enho's on 29 sekitori basho. So even if the rumour mill is correct and he has plans to join or replace Ishiura eventually in the heya, he might need to gambarise.

Either Enho can use the Hōchiyama clause (28 basho + oyakata as guarantor) or *tinfoil hat on* inherit Miyagino and let Hakuhō branch out.

It would be far more likely that he inherits Miyagino because Hakuhō decides to quit and leave sumo... which is something a few people suspect will happen sooner or later. For sure I can understand why people think hakuho may be pushed out but, look. He hasn’t even been retired for 2 years yet and he’s already maneuvering exdeshi into kabu. Takanohana ichimon is gonna look like a lame joke compared to what hakuho apparently has up the sleeve. I’m not a hakuho fan but clearly I wouldn’t underestimate his political machination… yet

It'll take more than such low-hanging fruit in the future, and now people are warned.

It's arguably been done before, but (apropos the previous comment) not by yokozuna Takanohana but rather his ozeki father - a lot of the rikishi from that 1990s Futagoyama-beya powerhouse era became oyakata, but not nearly all of them ended up staying long. I'm going to beat on the Tottori Johoku drum some more - assuming that he does indeed get his father's position, as speculated, upon the latter's retirement - that gives Miyagino (and possibly Enho) a few more years of planning, keeping the Magaki toshiyori active & under control in the meantime.
