Preparations of the masses- Nagoya 2023

Recommended Posts

Houshouryuu will be wearing a new dark blue mawashi in Nagoya. "Don't write about it yet.. I decided to try it on today and do some sumo and see if it felt good. It felt great so I'll be wearing it on day one..  I like it when it's tough so it's extremely good," he said. He has been training daily in the sweltering heat. Today he faced Meisei and lower rankers for 20 bouts. "My sumo is not bad and I feel good. Now I  need to rest my body a bit," he said of his condition.

This thread has been visited by swimming pool Hoshoryu.

Nephew presumably resting and recovering with some bootleg aquatherapy after a intense training session in the summer heat.

Maegashira Takanoshou trained at home today and was 12-1 against the lower rankers. "Im feeling much better than last basho and have been able to train better as well. I hope to win.." he said. "I ate some chicken wings today. Well, forty.." he boasted.

Ozumo's cryotherapy is so hilariously low-tech... Compare it to the NBA:

An ice bath is probably more effective and certainly safer than those cryochambers TBH

Somewhere in the archives (IIRC) is a photo of Tochinoshin in a cryochamber.

I seriously doubt that they are solely relying on ice bath for recuperation. Japan and the rest of the world will be going through El Niño heatwave in the coming months. Anything that will help deal with heatstroke and post-training recuperation (however rudimentary) will be welcomed.

Miyagino and Nihonoseki (are probably the richest oyakatas at the moment) don’t have the deep pockets of professional sport leagues teams/franchises to afford cryo-tech/baric chambers operating 24/7 on call. I don’t rule out someone sponsoring one for a limited time.

That's not an ice bath but just a pool for kids. My relatives have one like this. It's small & not so deep. Just slightly above knee level.

Hoshoryu just having fun there.
