the search feature

I believe the db is provided (free) by Adplorer, a digital marketing company that started in Cologne.  I like the price, and don't imagine there would be much use of finding a paid site (and don't  @  me!)

I would have already finished a frontend for a game that is currently managed in these forums by hand, except that a few days into my effort the github account was nuked for reasons that have yet to be explained.

I was going to post in this thread saying that the search function wasn't good, because there was no ability to exclude certain subforums from a search, which meant almost every search was flooded with results from the game forum and made finding anything useful a total chore.

But, someone in thread said that the advanced search allowed you to do this, but I've never seen the option for it anywhere at all. So I messed around and found out how to get the option: you have to select "Topics" under "Content type", and ONLY then does this option appear. Why that isn't the default is beyond me, though I guess the real question is why the default "All content" option doesn't let you do this (probably because "status updates" and "events" can't be filtered this way, but these things aren't used on this forum so they're irrelevant and would be better off removed).

Just knowing you can do this makes the search infinitely better and I never knew about it until now. The fact that by default this almost essential option was hidden is probably worth me mentioning it here in case other people didn't know this!

As an aside, something I have noticed is that this forum can't be searched with Google; I simply get no results when I limit results to site:sumoforum.net. Has this been done intentionally? (meta tags and robots.txt or whatever it is these days) I can get results if I use Bing, but no one uses Bing and it would be helpful to use Google to search the forum. Seems pointless to block Google but then not Bing and various other search engines.

I'm sure it's a robots.txt situation if Google doesn't know about it. Similar thought that I had was how the "badness" that I described was the existence of the default behavior that should probably cease to be the default. Like I was just watching Groundhog Day last night - if the default experience to walk across the street is to stick your foot in the puddle and get soaked, it's not a great consolation to know that you *could* go around the puddle. The default experience has already set the tone for what crossing that street feels like.

This is relatively new, 2 years ago I still got results from the forum, I haven't tried lately though

Just for fun I searched for "math the banzuke" -- it didn't come up in the first 2 pages of results, I clicked on the "search for the phrase 'math the banzuke'" link, it said retry my search after 4 seconds, i hit refresh, it said retry my search after 8 seconds.

What is much more annoying about the search feature is that you can't search for 3 character words - and abbreviations, especially now that Google can't be used any-more. Pet, cat, dog - and for the longer ones you never know which word is so common that it can't be searched

I think not, because your other thread should have still come up as the only result.

How would I do a search for threads that I started in this forum? I want to look at my old "Top 10" sumo records threads, but when I try to search for "Top 10" I get much more than just those posts

Go to your profile -> See My Activity -> under Forums, click Topics.
