Onosato and Takahashi have been training partners and classmates since they were kids. Nice to see them become sekitori together - and congrats to Kise on his first two shin-juryo!

I've been meaning to ask for a while, but what's with the universal buzzcuts? Is it mandatory for Japanese schoolboys, or only certain schools, or just a high-school/college sumo thing?

I'm not pretending to have deep insight to Japanese schools, but as far as I know it's not mandatory. I think in Japan the athletic types often go for buzzcuts -- easy to maintain and so on. Also dare I say, but it's an easy choice for the less fashionable kids. Japanese male haircuts can get quite elaborate so those who don't have much interest in that have an easy choice.

In some clubs it's used as a team building exercise - they take turns shaving each other's heads. In fact, there was an episode of a TV show which followed the club shown above and they did just that before a tournament.
