Day 1 of the zenchu - results https://sumou.zenchuu.jp/eventresult/

Individuals aggregated results https://sumou.zenchuu.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/高知全中個人予選集計表.pdf

Toyoda advanced with 3-0, Shigemura likewise. Same for 2 (presumably) Mongolians from Meitoku gijjuku, the local Kochi stronghold, and 2 from Tottori.

Last year Toyoda helped Kashiwa win the team title, beating Shigemura's Koniya team from Amami-Oshima in the sf, this year Kashiwa lost to them in the qf, and Shigemura did beat his old rival - last year they didn't meet. The Koniya team from Kagoshima won the team title 2-1 against the Takanosu team from Akita, after beating the Tottori team in the sf. Shigemura won all his bouts in the team best 32 tournament. https://sumou.zenchuu.jp/result_2023/団体決勝トーナメント対戦表/

Individual results should appear soon

Now we'll see Kotomitsuki II (but maybe not directly after middle school), his son won in the final against Shigemura, who lost by isami-ashi. Middle school yokozuna Aiki Tamiya (175cm, 150kg) is now at Omiya west middle school in Saitama, 3rd year. https://sumou.zenchuu.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/高知全中個人決勝T対戦表結果.pdf

He also won with the Saitama team at the earlier prefecture championships, his school had no team here.

Edit: Toyoda isn't in the best 32, the result from the earlier round today isn't up yet

Congrats to little Kotomitsuki, who is a spitting image of dad, but man I feel sorry for Shigemura. To be runner-up last year, then runner-up again this year - losing by isamiashi of all things - has got to be painful.

Toyoda Rinnosuke (14, 166cm, 114kg) and other amateur rikishi from the Kashiwa Hakurikikai team had a training camp at his hometown on Tokunoshima, from the 1st to the 4th. Rival Shigemura and his Koniya team, the individuals runner-up and team winners this time at the zenchu, were invited to a joint keiko session, but due to a typhoon the ship couldn't come. Toyoda this year won the Kanto championships and still hopes for a good result at the Hakuho cup - future plans: "I aim for yokozuna, but first I'll go to high school" http://amamishimbun.co.jp/2023/09/02/45881/

(Praying...) Grow taller Rinnosuke. His sumo is quite good, but he's starting to get dwarfed by opponents. I'm surprised he's even 166cm.

I have no idea why the sumo federation isn't posting any video this year, they scrapped their old live channel, emptied the one with videos and reposted a whole bunch of streams on the live channel recently.

The same low-res channel as above posted all videos now though: Individuals final tournament, including the first 2 rounds, for which at last results were posted on the zenchu site https://sumou.zenchuu.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/高知全中個人決勝トーナメント1・2回戦果.pdf - Tamiya-Toyoda at 9:40m

Rinnosuke dreams to become yokozuna, but also wants to get a teacher's license and become a coach like his sensei at the Hakurikikai, who is a 2nd father to him - he wants to have others like him leave the island and gambarize at sumo.

20230906D102008-imgIMAG2023090501204_imoo

- so his path is clear: he's already in Kashiwa, so Nittaidai Kashiwa high and then Nittaidai to get a teacher's license like Nakamura - I expect both Onosato and him to be a good coaches as oyakata once, but I have no expectation that they make it to yokozuna

The Koniya team together with Asian/World middle weight champion Ryuyama received one Kagoshima governor sports award for 2023. Shigemura goes on to Osaka Kindai attached high school, aiming for high school yokozuna, Masuyama and the middle school Ryuyama to Kagoshima Jitsugyo high school, all 3 aiming for the team yusho. o

Toyoda Rinnosuke also continues to high school (should be Nittaidai Kashiwa high, like Hoshoryu) and apparently then into ozumo (not Nittaidai) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3gl0z9mbxA
