Rikishi whose marriage/relationship had (probably) a major impact on their performance

Recommended Posts

So who had a major change for the worse since marriage:

Terutsuyoshi, who ate so much wedding cake that he ended in Makushita 6 month later and was never a Sekitori since.

Shimanoumi whose Banzuke luck seems to keep him his silken Mawashi.

A major change for the best had Terunofuji whose wife helped him with his rehabilitation.

Do you know about more rikishi?

Nishikigi's earlier golden run towards the joi (2019-ish) happened around the time of his marriage, I remember.

Did he marry at all? I only remember some mysterious fiancee represented by a crude drawing of his.

We have a thread for that, you don't need to remember, you only have to look it up

Today was the wedding reception of Nishikigi and Momoyo, with about 400 sumo related guests. Their first daughter Fuuka  楓香 was born last November.

Weddings or engagement announcements seem to happen after good results and are often followed by bad ones - Kotoeko seems to go down that path. The (imminent) birth of a child is more likely to give a career boost.

Checking the sekitori marriage thread, you could produce a table with: (first met,) relation started, live together, engaged, marriage registered, child birth, wedding reception - and compare it to the career results in the time periods

e.g. Kotoshoho

Kotoshoho today announced his engagement to a girl the same age (23) from Fukuoka, he proposed to her after the basho, already both families have met. The 2 met 2 years ago, have a relationship for a year, but don't yet live together: that is planned for August in a new home.

Today after keiko Kotoshoho announced that the marriage was registered on June 9th, his wife Shuna handed in the form at the Kashiwa city hall. In November the first son is expected to be born

Starting with Natsu 2022, he had

2022.05    M9e        6-9
2022.07    M11e      5-6-4
2022.09    M11e      7-8
2022.11    M11w    7-8
2023.01    M13e     11-4 J    Jun-Yusho (1st) Kanto-sho (1st)
2023.03    M5e        6-9
2023.05    M5w       2-10-3
2023.07    M13w    7-8

The relation seems to put him firmly into makuuchi for now, the marriage didn't add to that, we'll see how he does in Kyushu

Didn't Ryuden's komusubi debut time up with his engagement/marriage? Not so great since then...

During his hip revving days, right before his punishment for extra marriage activities.

Maybe thats why he grabbed the other day.

I can't remember the details, but there's the saga of Yoshikaze's marriage and divorce.  Seems like he was married for quite a long time but then went through a hell of a divorce.  I don't recall how much of this happened before his intai and how much after.  It was certainly long and drawn out.

It had a sad ending for the whole family, hopefully time will heal them.

Hakuho waited until his Yokozuna promotion to marry his wife.

Harumafuji had his after his ozeki promotion.

Aminishiki’s followed suit very quickly.

Chiyotairyu was allowed to marry his fiancé after being promoted to sanyaku.

Tamawashi won both his yusho close to his children’s birth?

Ex-Hakuho married his wife in Feb 2007 and was promoted to Yokozuna on May 30, 2007 --- wikipedia.

I remember reading an old article about him that said how much he enjoyed his wife calling him "Ozeki" when they first got married.

I should have checked this also when I looked up Ex-Hakuho.  Harumafuji had been an Ozeki for almost 3 years before he married.  He was promoted to Yokozuna almost a year after he married.

Nov 26, 2008 --- promoted to Ozeki
Oct 10, 2011 --- marriage
Sept 26, 2012 --- promoted to Yokozuna

----- wikipedia

Perhaps his marriage had an impact on his performance leading up to his promotion to Yokozuna.  Hopefully, the marriage had nothing to do with his downfall and subsequent retirement!
