Terunofuji was made an Ozeki back in 2015. He lost his rank through injury in 2017, and then descended all the way down to Jonidan in 2019. 2021 saw the culmination of an amazing comeback, when he won four yushos, and was promoted to Yokozuna. 2022 was not so good for him, with just one yusho, and pulling out of two bashos, and skipping one basho entirely. In 2023, he only turned up for two bashos, winning the yusho 14-1 in one, and then withdrawing on the fourth day in the other. He has not fought on the dohyo since July 2023.

But he starts afresh in 2024!

Please expand on your votes in the comments below - this will be used in the case of tie-breakers required at the end of the year to decide the yusho.

I’m voting early, but i may change my mind, my biggest concern with him now is his back/hip, it would require more time off and the soonest i see another Yokozuna is March with Kirishima earning the rank.

2Kinboshi will be Meisei and Abi.

That’s a big if considering how worn out he was after his first Yusho.

Terunofuji has had a storied career, the comeback was the icing on the cake.

(The poll currently says "He will go intai (retire) during 2023") -> should be 2024

I think he will give up 7 kinboshi: Abi, Takayasu, Meisei, Tobizaru, Tamawashi, Atamifuji and Shonannoumi. And he will retire during the year.

Kinboshi: 11. Atamifuji, Takayasu, Tobizaru, Gonoyama, Nishikigi, Tobizaru, Abi.

Atamifuji will have the most with 3.

No grand finale basho for him like Akebono or Hakuho. He tries to enter Hatsu, loses his first match to a Komusubi, goes kyujo immediately, changes his mind and goes intai when Kirishima wins yusho to secure a tsuna.

He will only compete in two tournaments, will only finish one of them where he goes 9-6, then will intai later in the year

Terunofuji and Atamifuji are from the same stable, so they're only meeting if it's a yusho playoff. Given you've predicted three wins for Tommy Fuji you either forgot this or are expecting a wild year of sumo :-)

As to my own predictions I'll say kinboshi to Gonoyama, Abi, and Wakamotoharu. Only expecting Terunofuji to participate in maybe 2 basho before retiring.

Isegahama going through a branch out would be something to behold, though!

17 voters for this poll.

Thirteen of us think that he will only collect a maximum of seven yorikiris, which suggests that the general feeling is that Terunofuji will be skipping some bashos.

A third of us think that he will give away two kinboshis in 2024.

Out of the questions for #3, we pretty much seem to agree with each other, with five questions getting no votes. Basically we generally think that he will go intai during 2023, and will have at least one basho where he will withdraw midway through.

Well, we can pretty much award this Poll yusho early too.....

Question 1....
In 2024, Terunofuji won by yorikiri....

6 times in January.
Once in March.
7 times in July.
Thereby making a total of 14 times.
Nobody got this spot on. Closest was just_some_guy with a prediction of 11, followed by Pitinosato (18), Godango (19) and Hakuryuho (7) in that order.

Question 2....
In 2024, Terunofuji surrended 6 kinboshis. These were
January - M1W Wakamotoharu and M4W Shodai.
March - M2W Meisei, M3E Oho and M3W Takanosho.
July - M6E Takanosho (again!)

Again, nobody spot on, but the closest were Kashunowaka and Hakuryuho with 7. Next closest were Morty, Godango and just_some_guy with 4.

Question(s) 3....
a) Terunofuji DID compete on shonichi in four bashos (January, March, May and July) - so NOBODY got this correct.
b) Terunofuji won two yushos (January and July) - again NOBODY got this correct.
c) Terunofuji did not win any jun-yushos, so in total he only won two yushos or jun-yushos. EVERYBODY got this correct.
d) Terunofuji was involved in two kettei-sens - for both of his yushos, and NOBODY got this correct.
e) In January, Terunofuji defeated M14W Onosho AND M15W Onosato (days 11 and 12) - and no other rikishis ranked at M11 or lower.  Gaijingai and just_some_guy were the two players to get this one correct - and finally we have something to work with.
f) The only two bashos that Terunofuji competed daily (January and July), he ended up with 13 and 12 wins. So, everyone got this correct, except Morty.
g) He went kyujo in the middle of two bashos (March and May) - giving kudos to Gaijingai, Getayukata, Morty, just_some_guy, Suwihuto, Seiyashi, Hakuryuho, Koorifuu, Tsuchinoninjin, furanohana, Pitinosato and Bunbukuchagama.
h) He won exactly one bout by hatakikomi (July day 13 against then Ozeki Takakeisho). So EVERYBODY got this correct.
i) Terunofuji lost to ten different rikishi in 2024, including twice to Onosato and Takanosho. However, he never lost to the same opponent three times. So, everyone got this correct except Gaijingai.
j) Terinofuji has not retired in 2024, and will fight on, going into 2025*. The only player to NOT predict his 2024 retirement (and therefore get this question correct) is Fashiriteta.
k) Well, Fashiriteta was the only poll-taker to precict 'none-of-the-above' - which is clearly not correct.

If you go through all the 'iffy' replies to these ten questions, just_some_guy does slightly less worse than everyone else.

Therefore, (including questions 1 and 2), @just_some_guy can claim the Yusho (Yushowinner...). Hakuryuho did slightly better than Godango in Question(s) 3, and so the jun-yusho goes to @Hakuryuho. Omedetou.

*unless he retires for some surprise reason, such as a scandal....
