Back in January 2023, there were only two names in the top two ranks. January 2024 will start with four names in the lofted top two ranks! But will this number increase, decrease, or stay the same for January 2025?

Please leave your actual prediction for the top two ranks for the January 2025 banzuke in the comments below, like this....

Anna     Y1  Kristoff
Elsa      Y2
Sven    O1   Oaken
            O2   Olaf

etc

- then we can see who came the closest at the end of the year.

Kirishima    Y    Takakeisho

Hoshoryu     O   Kotonowaka (but he'll have a Shikona change if he goes to Ozeki)

and for shits and giggles the rest of Sanyaku:

Gonoyama   S   Nishkigi

Hokoseiho    K   Ura

Kirishima Y
Hoshoryu  O Kotonowaka
          O Takakeisho

Two yokozuna promotions in the same calendar year would be amazing. Hasn't happened since 1987, I'll stick to one. :-)

Nice one - I assume you mean Kotonowaka taking this as his shikona after promotion. Could happen!

This could become the first year since 1932 with four Ozeki and no Yokozuna.

I don't think the lower sanyaku is nearly as predictable or even indicative of a good year's performance from the eventual recipients - but the yearly predictions are fun and I wouldn't want to put a cap on them.

I agree. I am trying to think of a fun way (with a points system) to make the lower sanyaku a yearly prediction within the confines of the poll. I have some ideas already, but give me a day pr two to mull it over ;-)

I think he was promised a Kotozakura when he becomes Ozeki.

Yokozuna Kirishima, Ozeki Takakeisho and Hoshoryu. Honorable mention to Daieisho who will continue to perform well but keep falling victim to the same handful of poorly timed dumb losses that kept him from being an ozeki already.

Terunofuji Y Kirishima

Hoshoryu O Takakeisho

Kotonowaka O2

When he's on the dohyo, Teru is still better than anyone else on the banzuke.  I think he'll hang on a little longer...

A decent 26 people voted for this poll.

The vast majority of us think that Terunofuji will be retiring this year - and a quarter of us think that Takakeisho will  be losing his Ozekihood.

We all think that Kirishima and Hoshoryu will keep their Ozeki ranks - or go the next step upwards.

We are four times more certain that Kirishima will be a Yokozuna, than the actual Yokozuna Terunofuji!

We have a good feeling that Kotonowaka will make it to Ozeki this year.

The Yokozunas and Ozekis will look like this on the January 2025 banzuke....

Terunofuji      Y1
Kotozakura*  O1  Hoshoryu
                        O2  Onosato

*Formerly Kotonowaka, until shikona-change after March basho.

Well, this one took some time to work out....  But after going through ALL answers, I calculate that the people who got the most correct are @Hankegami, @Danjinoumi, @Nantonoyama, @Washuyama and @I am the Yokozuna.  So, to the comments!

Only two of them commentated. Ignoring their wrong guesses.... Both Washuyama and Nantonoyama correctly predicted Hoshoryu and Kotozakura as Ozekis. However, Washuyama also correctly predicted that Terunofuji would hang on as a Yokozuna.

So by a small whisker, the yusho goes to Washuyama (Yushowinner...) and the jun-yusho goes to Nantonoyama (Secondprize...).

I'm also going to hand out a Fighting Spirit Prize to @Faustonowaka for being the only guesser tp predict Onosato's promotion to Ozeki.
