New recruits Hatsu 2024

Recommended Posts

All 11 passed the first shindeshi kensa under the new rules - no extra small applicants yet, all cleared the usual standard and wait for the result of the medical exam - all mentioned ones are above 100kg - and Akiyama (166cm) apparently gained the extra cm for the yardstick of 167cm

Miyagino's Demi and Onoe's Inami - Demi (192cm, 127kg) was at the heya as kenshusei for about 9 months (mage OK): "First of all juryo"

Nishonoseki's Ikkyou Shibuya  渋谷一興 (18, 184cm, 113kg), from the baseball club of baseball stronghold Ibaraki Joso gakuin high school - the oyakata originally was a baseball kid. From the start of school Shibuya  did baseball, injured his right elbow in 1st year middle school and lost his potential for baseball. He still continued in high school but thought it hard to do that in university, and he wanted to do some sport and got to sumo: he saw a photo of (also Ibaraki PR ambassador) Nishonoseki at the station, read in the news that he has more and more deshi in his new heya and thought he could be one.

The list of those who passed is published on day 1

Edit: Sumo, especially by the yokozuna, conveys the image of completely crippled people competing for years

Nishonoseki-beya revealed two shindeshi who will be in maezumo in the Hatsu basho.

First is Teni Kato (加藤 天意) from Daisen, Akita prefecture.

And second, Ikkyo Shibuya (澁谷 一興) from Ushiku, Ibaraki prefecture - hometown of the shisho himself. Out of Joso Gakuin High School in Tsuchiura.

Shibuya and Kato

Kato (18, 182cm, 112kg) did judo in primary and middle school, while at Akita pref. Nishisenboku high in Daisen he watched sumo broadcasts and decided he wants to go there: he contacted the heya by himself: "Getting higher even just a bit and show the people at home how I've grown up."

Demi had only about 80kg when he came to Japan and nearly no sumo experience - his father, 4 times grand champion in Mongol-sumo bokh is 197cm, an old friend of Hakuho. The first connection is that Demi's great-grandfather taught bokh to Hakuho's father o

Both from judo backgrounds.

K/Oguchi is from Noda, Chiba prefecture and his shikona will be Kyokutendo (旭天道,  きょくてんどう). He finished third in a Chiba prefectural judo tournament once.

Nishida is from Kitami, Hokkaido prefecture and his shikona will be Kyokutairyu (旭大龍,  きょくたいりゅう).

Nishida left, K/Oguchi right.

Demi needs the visa first and has to wait one more basho. He may have no maezumo appearance - we'll see if next basho that gets cancelled again or if at last normality returns

Ayato Onozawa 斧澤亜矢斗 (Saitama Sakae high 3rd year, 167cm, 140kg) joins Oitekaze-beya, Saitama pref. shusshin from the Irumagawa youth sumo club like Hokutofuji and Tochimusashi. Best 16 at the kokutai, yusho in the above 100kg category at a Kanto region tournament and with 8-0 in the team event at the interhigh contributing to the Saitama Sakae yusho.

The heya has at the moment 4 sempai from Saitama Sakae high, Daieisho, Tobizaru, Tsurugisho and Hitoshi. He started keiko at the heya on the 24th and on his 2nd day yesterday was 4-8 with Daikisho, Daihisho and other lower rankers.

Sponichi reports him to be a Takakeisho look alike (also from Saitama Sakae) - Daieisho thinks him a 3 times smaller version and he often gets told the likeness.

Onozawa is reported as the first uchi-deshi of Daieisho (looks like the yusho winner has a kabu in reach)

So, uh, hi. It's been...four years? I'm definitely not meaning to distract from everyone who's taken up the maezumo mantle (especially Akinomaki - and I hope you'll continue to include the Miselet links with all the other content you dig up), but I got an urge this basho...

Day 5

Mz1   Takeuchi (1-3)          Mz5   Kyokutairyu (2-1)

Mz12  Suzunofuji (2-1)        Mz11  Shibuya (0-3)

Ayanofuji and Onozawa made me wonder if there could actually be water breaks in maezumo...

Sadly, no attempt was made to avoid repeating the Suzunofuji-Shibuya matchup from Day 3.

Standings:

     Mz10  Kato         Nishonoseki  2-2 W

Final matches coming in about an hour, where presumably the Oshima duo will compete against the other pair of 2-win rikishi for full qualification, with perhaps the losers battling it out for another 3-win record afterwards - unless both Kyokus lose, of course. At least I'm assuming that they'll be kept separate from the lower-scoring trio (where the most sensible thing to do is probably Akiyama vs Shibuya with either the winner or the loser then facing Fujihara).

Can't tell if that's a Warhammer 40K reference on the right Mawashi or if Magneto got an upgrade.

I hadn't looked in detail at the kesho mawashi, but Kato actually has the one of Kisenosato himself with his favorite Raoh and not the 2nd attendant kesho mawashi, while Shibuya has that with the hero of the manga for the tachimochi.
