Sad news indeed. I only caught the tail-end of his active career so I have little to offer about that. But I was very impressed with the job he did building up Shikoroyama-beya, it always seemed to have a great atmosphere, and I expect that to continue under ex-Homasho who was very close to the shisho.

From the NSK

Nikkan Sports had posted a memorial gallery video

the wide-shows had several features, but the videos are mostly gone by now - a remaining one

Today was the tsuya (wake) of Terao at Shikoroyama-beya, with over 200 sumo related persons attending, friends etc. - about 800 in all including members from the general public. Takanohana and others sent flowers - he had said in advance "Is it really OK if I come for condolence?" - tabloids had called his Takanohana ichimon project one big reason for the deterioration of the health of Shikoroyama, who started drinking heavily after the ichimon collapsed. o

Man, the tabloids have still got it in for moto-Takanohana, haven't they?

just flies in the face of the facts:

Eldest Kakureizan died from heart failure age 60 and 4 months in 2020, Sakahoko age 58 in 2019 from cancer, Terao age 60 and 10 months. Their mother had died age 43 of cancer just before he joined ozumo. He had used her maiden name as shikona, only on juryo promotion he took for one basho the first shikona of 3rd yokozuna Nishinoumi, deshi of his maternal great grandfather, 2nd yokozuna Nishinoumi and 9th Izutsu (died age 50).

Terao was the innocent recipent of a 'genetic curse' as I see it.

Also I'd have done much more than drink heavily (if that bit is even accurate) if I knew I didn't have long. Never been any rumours of it impinging on heya life, have there?

Well no self-respecting tabloid will ever allow the truth to get in the way of "good" story...

Definitely good to see Konishiki make the trip and pay his respects.

No matter what he is wearing, you gotta give him the respect he earned as an Ozeki.

About 400 were at the funeral service of Shikoroyama today: his kaimyo (posthumous name) is 錣山院優好豊瑛居士 - still written Shikoroyama, but with the proper reading for a kaimyo: Tetsuzan-in Yuukouhouei-koji - the first kanji of his real first name Tsunefumi  好文 is used and that of his oyakata first name Eiichi 瑛一, plus gentle - the yuu from yusho and bountiful , the hou from Houmasho - his first son in the address said "He really, truly was a terrifically gentle and good person" - his mother carried the ihai plate with the kaimyo, he the iei portrait

The rijikai yesterday acknowledged Tatsutagawa as acting shisho for the Hatsu basho - but for some (I guess money) reason he still doesn't take the name and the heya officially. The reports always say: it is planned that ...

The NSK announced it today.
