Most makuuchi wins of the year was already awarded on day 15 - for Kirishima with 62 wins

The Nikkan unofficial awards started to appear - first kensho related: the most kensho slipped out of hand

Most this year for Takakeisho - 686 on his bouts he didn't win, Hoshoryu 2nd with 570, then Kirishima 496 - and then already lower ranked, but ex-ozeki: Takayasu and Mitakeumi both with 458 kensho that got away

When he had a bout, Terunofuji had plenty of kensho - not much this year, but when there was big money in reach, he got it: he is top in the winning percentage of the bouts with more than a million yen (in hand), at 7-0 - the bouts:

Kotonowaka is also at 100%, but with only one such bout, Tobizaru is at 80% with 4-1

Next the speed awards - the Nikkan awards (the 12th edition this year) are only for those in makuuchi the whole year. First : having enjoyed sumo award = longest bouts

Used to be reserved for Takayasu, but he's no longer in the top 5: Midorifuji spent a total of 1829.5s fighting on the dohyo, being there all 90 days - average time for a win 17.64s, for a loss 23.01s - decisive for that award the longest bout, a total of 401.1s with mizu-iri against Hokuseiho

2nd Ryuden with 1579.4s, 3rd Kirishima with 1276.4s, with 5 days absent or not fighting (fusen: 2 wins, 1 loss), then Hiradoumi and Mitakeumi

the top 3 of those with most long bouts, 30s or more: Kirishima and Ryuden with 12, Kirishima 6 till 60s, 5 till 90s and one above. Midorifuji had 9, but 5 of those above 90s.

On the other end the speedster award: goes to Abi with just 406.2s on the dohyo, 4.08s for a win, 4.96s for a loss. Onosho next with 415.9s but in only 83 fights, Daieiesho with 530.2s, Sadanoumi 546.1s and Tamawashi 598s

Mitakeumi was a complete surprise to me; in his "prime" he absorbed the opponent's rush, then pushed the fellow out -- or didn't, and got yorikiried out himself.  Neither one took much time.

Today the one team award: goes to Isegahama for 5 yusho this year - in 4 divisions: Takerufuji jonidan for Hatsu, Terunofuji makuuchi for Natsu, Satorufuji jonidan for Natsu and makushita for Kyushu, Atamifuji juryo for Nagoya

2nd is Ajigawa with 3 yusho and a long list of heya with 2 at joint 3rd place.

They also had points for the different yusho: 6 points for makuuchi and then one point less for each lower division, till jonokuchi with 1 point. With this we get Michinoku and Tokiwayama at 2nd place with both 2 makuuchi yusho, Tatsunami 4th with 1 plus makushita - Ajigawa drops way down with only yusho in the 2 lowest divisions

I wonder where would Hokuseiho rank on that list if he got to Makuuchi one basho earlier... or even if they count all makuuchi boots no matter how much time rikishi spent there.

EDIT: Went back through forum posts listing bout length... completely unsurprisingly he would have easily won the trophy even with only five basho he competed considering he spent a total of 2636.3 seconds fighting on the dohyo.

The Japan pro sports association JPSA awards stopped 2019, in 2020 the NSK left the organization, but last year the association restarted and there were awards again - and this year they also include sumo, though there was nothing in the news that the NSK had rejoined (thus the guys from Wikipedia haven't noticed wiki/日本プロスポーツ協会)

The Make the Gyoji Cry award this year goes to Kotonowaka and Takanosho, both had 7 bouts with mono-ii. Takanosho with 5 bouts less due to kyujo, so he has a bigger percentage of controversial bouts - and he has a top of 4 bouts where the gyoji pointed to the opponent and he got either a reversal or won the torinaoshi.  o

What do we call the award for the Rikishi who wins the most torinaoshi? The Double or Nothing award?

And how about the award for the most torinaoshi losses? The No means No award?

I had a similar idea. But I thought the award should rather go to the shimpan crews who award the most controversial mono-ii. Thereby making the rikishi cry.

Ura with 100 points and 17 times no.1 is no surprise, 2nd year in a row for him, 2nd year in a row Takakeisho at no.2. Ura is top in total points, 1st places, 2nd places, total appearances and total votes: 90 days of votes, average 26.47 votes a day for him - assuming that Nikkan has access to full data and not only counts the votes on days he's ranked in the top 3. I think you can see for a short time the complete results in the app when you have access to vote that day

Only 30 rikishi were eligible for the awards and in makuuchi the whole year.

The Hochi Best rikishi of the year award goes to Kirishima, usually the one who had the award for most wins gets this one as well. Kirishima I didn't get it though: he had most wins in 1991 with also 62 wins, but Konishiki got the Best rikishi award. https://www.hochi.co.jp/award/rikishi/2023.html

As expected, Atamifuji also got the Chuspo Best newcomer of the year award - next aim sanyaku, quicker than Terunofuji, and: "ozeki is part of sanyaku, isn't it?" - his kanji for the year, the first of Atami, heat o

selection committee members: from the NSK the top shimpan Sadogatake, Fujishima, Kumegawa and Asakayama, Shibatayama, YDC top Yamauchi, Kitanofuji (! - good sign), journalists from Hochi, Sponichi, Daily sports, Sanspo, Nikkan sports, Kyodo, Jiji and 2 from the 2 Chuspo papers.

Looks like this year there will be again no Hochi pro sports awards - the last were awarded in 2019. The award ceremonies for best rikishi and best newcomer are on day 1 of the Hatsu basho, after the dohyo-iri.
