Showa Survivors

Recommended Posts

You might think of this as the flip side of the old thread Heisei Hopefuls, an old favorite for tracking up-and-comers.  Here are the current/former sekitori born in the Showa Era, plus the only current Makushitan who topped out below sekitori to provide some additional context.  I haven't learned how to insert tables PROPERLY, but this seems readable, at least.

Amazing (Laughing...)

I intended to start a thread with the exact same title tomorrow, only mine was to track all the remaining Showa-born rikishi, who now number 50 with the retirement of Azumaryu. Of those, 13 had their hatsu-dohyo in the 1990s, and 8 of that group were born in the 1970s.

2017 Haru was the first banzuke on which Heisei-born sekitori outnumbered Showa-born, 36 to 34. Almost seven years on, there are currently only five Showa-born sekitori. Can Kitaharima keep rolling back the years? It seems unlikely that anyone else has a chance of reaching Juryo to boost the number.

Here's the full list as of the start of 2024, which I'll update with retirements, shikona changes, new highest ranks etc.

Well, yours is PROPERLY formatted and complete, as opposed to mine.  :-)  I did my first query after the Nagoya basho and didn't post that because of the lack of formatting.  I found it interesting that the Juryo ranks were empty and there were only two Makushitans at that time.  That really says something about the quality of the survivors in Maegashira.

That's partly because he's cheating--if you copy and paste tables from the db they magically just work.

Not if you use the "wrong" browser, they won't.

Which is the right or wrong browser?  I normally use Chrome.

Meanwhile, Terunofuji participating means 46-year-old Satonofuji has resumed yumitori-shiki duty this basho.

I use Edge when I need to paste in tables.  It doesn't work in Firefox, which is my preferred browser.

The opening basho of 2024 saw the Showa Survivors put together 150 wins, 203 losses and 37 absences. 16 rikishi finished with a kachi-koshi, 30 others were make-koshi (including Aoiyama who withdrew at 0-7), and four rikishi were absent for the whole basho.

The first kachi-koshi went to Dairaido, who made his first 4-0 start since 2018 Nagoya. Unfortunately this one ended the same way, with three straight losses for a 4-3 result.

Some milestones among the Showa Survivors, if I've missed any feel free to add.

Tamawashi - 800th career win, Day 13.
Shoketsu - 600th career win, Day 4.
Maenofuji - 500th career win, Day 11.
Ryuseio - 400th career win, Day 8.

Sawaisamu - 1,200th bout, Day 2.
Kitaharima - 1,100th consecutive bout, Day 5.
Asanojo - 800th bout, Day 1.
Azumanami - 600th bout, Day 7.

Unfortunately it seems Maenofuji, Hatachijo and Asanotosa are all hanging up their mawashi at this basho, along with Shinzan who had effectively retired after Kyushu.

In the box below are the full results for 2024 Hatsu, in banzuke order.

As mentioned in the post before this one, four more Showa Survivors followed Azumaryu into retirement after the 2024 Hatsu basho, leaving us with 45 on the banzuke, plus Higohikari  who put in an ill-fated maezumo appearance.

Kitaharima did indeed manage to return to Juryo for a record-equalling 9th time, and as the second-oldest to do so in the post-WW2 era. Unfortunately he couldn't do enough to hang on for another basho, so we'll be back to five Showa-born sekitori in May.

The first kachi-koshi among the survivors this time went to Hitachigo, making his first 4-0 start for just over nine years.

Yoshiazuma seems to have a chronically bad back these days, and chalked up the first zenpai record of his 28-year career in this basho.

Some milestones this basho:

Shoketsu - 1,200th consecutive career bout, Day 8.
Nionoumi - 1,000th career bout, Day 15.
Mimurodake - 900th career bout, Day 4.
Sadanokuni - 800th career bout, Day 2.
Ryuseio - 800th career bout, Day 8.
Tochinoshima - 700th career bout, Day 2.
Chiyoraizan - 700th career bout, Day 15.

Sadanoumi - 700th career loss, Day 13 & 400th Makuuchi loss, Day 11 (but the only Makuuchi survivor with a kachi-koshi!).
Sakura - 500th career loss, Day 13.
Chiyooume - 400th career loss, Day 8.
Ryuseio - 400th career loss, Day 11.

After this basho we see another four calling time on their careers. Kirimaru was always expected to go when Michinoku-beya closed, while Okinofuji will still be around as one of three newly-recruited sewanin - he was never absent in 18 years, 742 consecutive bouts. Mogaminishiki and Sakura both served as chanko-ban of their respective heya, so will no doubt be missed by their gourmand rikishi.

Our 42 survivors put together a combined 130 wins and 190 losses in the 2024 Natsu basho, with 13 kachi-koshi and 27 make-koshi. The two lowest-ranked rikishi, Shosei and Higohikari, were absent and will be banzuke-gai next time.

Among the Showa sekitori, Sadanoumi and Takarafuji both finished with nine wins, while Tamawashi and Aoiyama narrowly missed out on kachi-koshi with losses on senshuraku. Myogiryu struggled to a meagre three wins to register his first make-koshi as a Juryo rikishi in a completed basho.

Elsewhere, Adachi reached three career milestones in three consecutive bouts, recording his 500th loss on Day 3, his 900th bout on Day 6 and his 400th win on Day 7. Other rikishi reaching milestones in this basho were:

Tamawashi - 1600th consecutive career bout, Day 2. 800th career loss, Day 15.
Sadanoumi - 1400th career bout, Day 2. 700th career win, Day 5.
Musashiumi - 1100th career bout, Day 10.

Aoiyama - 600th career win, Day 10.
Tochikasuga - 500th career win, Day 5.
Hitachigo - 400th career win, Day 11.
Sadanokuni - 400th career win, Day 12.
Asanojo - 400th career win, Day 15.

Shoketsu - 600th career loss, Day 8.
Hagane - 500th career loss, Day 8.

38 Showa Survivors participated in the final basho to be held at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, totalling 132 wins and 172 losses. Kaorufuji and Teraoumi were absent (the latter having really retired after Natsu, it's official now), while Shosei and Higohikari remain off the banzuke.

None of the sekitori could muster a kachi-koshi this time, Myogiryu had the best chance after a decent start but lost his last four to finish 7-8. We must look to Fujiazuma to find our first winning record, his 5-2 booking his return to Makushita after seven basho in Sandanme. He'll be joined there by Nionoumi and Chiyoraizan who got the same result.

Sawaisamu fought two opponents almost 32 years his junior, winning against Wakasasaki for his 400th career win, and later losing against Kikuchi.

Satonofuji became the most prolific yumitori-shiki performer in history, finally surpassing Edonohana's record which had stood for over 40 years.

Milestones:

Aoiyama - 1200th career bout, Day 13.
Hagane - 1000th career bout, Day 10.
Hirose - 600th consecutive career bout, Day 9.

Myogiryu - 600th career win, Day 10.
Asatenmai - 500th career win, Day 10.
Sawaisamu - 400th career win, Day 8.

Satonofuji - 600th career loss, Day 6.

38 Showa Survivors took part in this basho, posting a combined 129 wins and 169 losses, with 13 kachi-koshi and 25 make-koshi. Myogiryu was absent and announced his retirement after the basho, followed by Aoiyama whose 5-10 record would have seen him drop out of the sekitori ranks too.

So we'll be down to three Showa-born sekitori on the next banzuke, all of them in Makuuchi. Takarafuji reached double-digit wins (albeit with one fusensho) for the first time in eight years, and only the fifth time in his career. Tamawashi and Sadanoumi just fell short of kachi-koshi with senshuraku defeats; Tamawashi records a fourth consecutive 7-8 result.

Sadanokuni claimed the first kachi-koshi of the basho, making a 4-0 start to the basho for the first time in exactly ten years. Hirose also secured kachi-koshi on the following day with his own 4-0 start.

Ryusei's make-koshi will see him fall to Sandanme for the first time since 2016 Hatsu, ending a run of 51 consecutive basho in Makushita.

In addition to two of our sekitori, 45-year-old Koshinoryu also announced his retirement after over 29 years on the dohyo. That leaves us with seven rikishi born in the 1970s, and eleven who had their hatsu-dohyo in the 1990s.

Milestones:

1,631st consecutive bout - Tamawashi, Day 3, surpassing the record set by Aobajo.

1,300th consecutive bout - Takarafuji, Day 7.

1,200th career bout - Dairaido, Day 2.
1,200th career bout - Koshinoryu, Day 9.

800th Makuuchi bout - Sadanoumi, Day 10.

500th career win - Hagane, Day 9.

600th career loss - Aoiyama, Day 4.
500th career loss - Nionoumi, Day 10.
400th career loss - Katsunofuji, Day 8.

37 Showa Survivors participated in this basho, 36 on the banzuke and Higohikari showed up in maezumo as well (um, yay?). And it was a pretty good way to end the year, with the veterans chalking up a combined 132 wins and 144 losses, 16 kachi-koshi and 19 make-koshi.

Of our sekitori trio, Takarafuji and Tamawashi both managed 8-7 kachi-koshi, the latter becoming only the 4th rikishi in the modern era to do so as a 40-year-old. However, Sadanoumi could muster only 4 wins and is vulnerable to Juryo demotion on the next banzuke. As a minor trivia note, this was his 34th basho holding a double-digit Maegashira rank, breaking the previous record set by Asanowaka.

Besides fighting the 1,000th bout of his career, 43-year-old Asatenmai compiled a 6-1 kachi-koshi at the top of Jonidan.

Fighting in Jonokuchi for only the third time, Satonofuji at least kept up his 100% kachi-koshi record there, and ends a six-basho make-koshi streak as a result.

Tenichi - 1,300th career bout, Day 11.
Hienriki - 1,100th career bout, Day 12.
Asatenmai - 1,000th career bout, Day 5.
Hitachigo - 800th career bout, Day 2. Also 400th career loss, Day 10.

Moriurara - 600th career loss, Day 8.

Takarafuji - 600th Makuuchi loss, Day 10.
