New recruits March 2024

He's certainly not the only one, but now it's Kiho, Raiho, Enho and Matsui all struggling to make 170 on a good day. If you include Jonidan rikishi he does in fact now have 7 such rikishi. Having recently been in Japan, yes it's a normal height amongst adult men there - however on the dohyo is another matter.

Nishonoseki has 2 new recruits, Endo Daishin (遠藤大心, same surname as maegashira Endo) 15 year old from Ami city, Ibaraki prefecture, will make his debut in March.

The not-for-long-Endo and the stablemaster at his school.

And Matsuzawa Yoshihiro(?) (松澤美博), 15 year old from Saigo town in Fukushima prefecture. Nishonoseki doesn't say that he will or will not start in March, just saying that he has joined.

Yuma Hamada  濱田優誠 (17, 169cm, 100kg) from Tsubata town, 3rd year at Kanazawa-gakuin-dai attached high school joins Shikoroyama-beya, (still) Tatsutagawa was at the school today: "He's small, but does interesting sumo."

img_c8ded33cfa2d724239f2e15f71197a091404

in August 2022 with same town, same youth club shusshin Onosato, who came for a visit

o img_c349c45326cfe6942a279ad36ff53b6b255305.jpgo

Hamada started at the club in 5th grade, after losing to a smaller kid at a tournament. In middle school he suffered from spondylolysis, in 2nd year high school he was runner-up at the pref. newcomer tournament, but due to knee and back injuries didn't enter national tournaments. He wanted to quit sumo with high school, but got the motivation to go on by the success of his 2 gentle "o-niichan" friends Onosato and Oshoumi. He was at several heya and was approached by Shikoroyama-beya, where the 2 high school sempai Seigo and Kawabuchi are members, he'll be the 12th from the school's sumo club to join ozumo.

The oyakata wants him to become like Endo and Enho and give vigour to the disaster stricken locals. His main goal is to become the 3rd sekitori from the town, and he wants to have bouts once with the other 2, Onosato and Oshoumi.

I've nothing against it if they turn out like Ura or Midorifuji, but I'm less thrilled by Roy Batty types like Ishiura and Enho.

Roy Batty types? I love Blade Runner, but must admit I can't follow the reference!

Proper size recruit for Takadagawa-beya: Kirimaru Kokufugata (15, 181cm, 120kg), from Tsuru, Yamanashi - already decided as 2nd year (180cm, 108kg):

Recommended by his grandad he started sumo in 5th grade. He was 2 years in a row in the individuals at national middle school tournaments and once in the team. During the Kofu jungyo 2 years ago he received again an autograph of Ryuden and that led to an experience stay at the heya, after which his entry was decided (he first met Ryuden at the 2019 Kofu jungyo) - with the dream to surpass first Ryuden and then Hakuho and Futabayama.

He had a farewell party today at Tsuru First middle school, with his family and the oyakata, and received the graduation certificate earlier than his classmates.

That's taken quite the twist since, hasn't it?

Turns out Hokuseiho's version of Snow White was more like Rammstein's take! (ref: look up "Rammstein - Sonne" on YouTube)

Joining Kasugano-beya is 18-year-old Yutaro Shintani? (新谷 雄太朗) from Miura, Kanagawa prefecture. He's been involved in sumo since elementary school, and won the Wanpaku Sumo Miura Basho in three successive years. Later on he helped Minoshima High School in Wakayama prefecture to third place in the team competition at the Inter-high.

Otowayama-beya has another recruit for the Haru basho, the only information offered so far is his shikona: 象竜. Zoryu?

Here he is on the left, new Takeuchi brother in the middle, Hakuryu on the right.

Asakayama-beya also has three recruits this basho, pictured below on banzuke-folding duty. I don't know which is which, but the names are 氏家 (Ujiie?), 中山 (Nakayama) and 玉置 (Tamaki?).

Probably good for Asakayama to start recruiting heavily again. Kaisho looks unlikely to make it back to Juryo for a while. Having a younger Kaisei to recruit has to help too

Quite a celebrity in Yamanashi, judging from the so far 2 video designs by local TV, even in middle school

Takadagawa was at another new recruit farewell party yesterday, for Norifumi Narita 成田憲史 (173cm, 107kg), 3rd year at Ochiai middle school in Maniwa, Okayama. He had an experience stay in the heya last October and decided to go into ozumo, from the city the brothers Maniwayama and Sachinoyama are in the heya - and it is one hometown of Kimura Shonosuke as well (he went to primary school there). Narita wants to catch up with the other 2 (moderate task, they are jd and jk)

Noda is now reported as 184cm, 130kg, Niiya as 179cm, 125kg.

Niiya had injured his right knee last April and thought about quitting sumo, but the coach gave him the motivation to go on: "Even if you leave sumo, what you wanted to do was sumo." He wants to do bout by bout without getting injured and become a successful rikishi. Another sempai in the heya is Iwatomo (Kimurayama)

There is Matsui, and another new recruit joins Miyagino-beya - this is the last then. Apparently a Mongolian half, (guess:) Enerel Ayumu Ono 小野歩エネレル, 18y old without sumo experience, from rugby background. Both already are (completely innocent, but confined like the others) at the heya and take part in keiko. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2024/02/29/kiji/20240229s00005000420000c.html

Ooki Shirakawa 白川大貴  (18, 182cm, 160kg) from the Kagawa prefecture Takamatsu Minami high school sumo club enters Oitekaze-beya

Taiyo Shirakawa  白川 大陽 (しらかわ・たいよう)(188cm, 175kg)  joins his brother Daikisho at Oitekaze-beya. Winner with the Nichidai team at the East Japan student championships, best individual result a 3rd place in the above 135kg category at the national student weight class championships. He already trains at the heya, 17-0 against sempai Satsumasho and 4 other jd.

4.jpgo 4.jpgo

His younger brother Daito 大翔 is 2nd year at Nichidai, he absolutely has to join there, that would make Oitekaze-beya a heya with 2 sets of triplets:

The 3rd Kajino brother joins the heya as well, Kira Kajino 梶野煌 (15), after Daiyusho (who joined with real name Ishioka) and Daihisho - the 3rd set after the Onamis at Arashio and the Kiyotas at Dewanoumi, Kiyota, Kiyonohana and Kiyonoyama

On 03/01/2023 at 11:52, Akinomaki said:

The 3rd of the Kiyota brothers - also from Fukushima pref., from Koriyama city - Teppei 清田哲平 (15, 175cm, 89kg)  joins Dewanoumi-beya, where the eldest Kiyota and the 2nd Kiyonohana are active, sons of ms Kiyonoumi from the same heya, now  rijicho of the local sumo fan club. They lack a sekitori as grandfather, but have the same goal as the Onami's, sekitori at the same time. The eldest dropped back to jd after a neck injury and is now in sd again, the 2nd dropped back to jd after makekoshi last basho.

Around Otani level, although with notable improvement between years 3 and 4, so perhaps he's only recently found what works for him and has more potential for growth.
