Final round of voting (21 voters)

3rd place...

M1E Wakamotoharu (57.14%) (Thirdprize...) defeated K1E Takayasu (42.86%)

Sumo Forum's Favourite Rikishi for 2024
K1W Ura (52.38%) (Yushowinner...) defeated Y1E Terunofuji (47.62%) (Secondprize...)

So, Ura is the winner of Sumo Forum's Favourite Rikishi for 2024 contest.

I am a little surprised about that. How about you?

i really hate ura and his style

on feb, 20th i mailed to jakosotsu, after he had some comment to the votes

"Egal... Gewinnt eh ura"
which roughly translates to " does not matter ...ura will win nevertheless"

There was never going to be any other outcome.

Ura is internet's sumo darling. No surprise here.

I'm really not surprised Ura won because (Gernobono notwithstanding) he's almost universally liked. Many others have detractors in far larger numbers.

Just off the top of my head, Terunofuji's run to second felt weak to me. Maybe someone else could have pipped Ura at the finish.

To be fair, on Feb 9th you mailed "ist eh egal... es gewinnt eh kotonowaka" ;-)

It was a fun event, and I wouldn't mind seeing this every year. I'd only suggest to run each round in one go instead of separate micro-polls.

...and now I realized Gernobono could have tipped the scales if he didn't abstain. B-)

Once a year, each round lasts a week or so, lower bracket included would be my ideal system.

Do you really believe that rikishi popularity can change so drastically each year that it needs a new poll?

Don't get me wrong I'm enjoying participating but I'm wondering if it makes sense.

Yes, a lot can change in a year. Controversies happen, new ranks are obtained, we have exciting new guys and the previous crop of newcomers aren't as fresh to us. Also, because this is a H2H tournament rather than just tallying overall votes, different draws could lead to different results.

Have a look at the shift in a Reddit poll from a few months ago - only one of the top 10 retained their previous year's rank.

I am still intrigued by the fact that there are at least three people on this forum that put jam first on their scones ;-)

I don't like his submarine style sumo but at least he's entertaining!
Although I have to admit that I often get the impressions that he might be one (submarine?)-sandwich short of a picnic....

Not necessarily, but I do believe the pairings have an impact. I'd love to analyze every possible combination of brackets if possible.

Strong final four opponents. The Ozeki would have probably made it a lot further if they didn't run into Ura early.

As I am a very busy and wealthy businessman with a full agenda and much gusto, I found the deadlines to be too close apart- we could easily have had two days to vote and reach the basho in time for the final result. I missed way too many days in this intriguing but intriguing game, as a result.. Now I'm really curious to see what  the results will be next year. Thanks for running this, my not participating as much as I would have liked notwithstanding..

I thought I was reading a Hakuho quote regarding his absence from the heya ... too soon?

Never too soon. Only too late. (Jean Paul Goddard Homarenishiki)

I second this. IIRC Midorifuji lost by one vote on a day I didn't get my vote in. I could have saved him (Tearsforming...)
