Jejima 1,314 Posted February 3 (edited) Hi all, For a bit of inter-basho fun (and partly based on the poll for replacing 'Guess Kisenosato's Aite' target), I am going to try something new. If this works, I'll try to remember to do it every year based on the January torikumi. Basically all 70 rikishi that feature on the January banzuke will be put into a knockout competition (draw being made after each round), until we have a 'winner'. I did consider putting some non-sekitori (such as Wakatakakage) into the mix, but decided that would be too subjective - especially if this experiment is repeated in future years. There needs to be some hard-and-fast cut-off, and the bottom of Juryo is a good place. Due to the way that the polls are set up here at sumo forum, there are limitations to the number of possible rounds per 'poll'. I considered making the questions a little more complicated or using Survey Monkey, but that makes things 'messy'. So keeping it simple, I intend to post one poll per day with a 24 hour window for votes, with three 'matches' per poll. This means it will take about a month or so, of daily polls, until we find the 'most popular rikishi of 2024 on sumo forum'. I will make this poll anonymous (please don't rig it - I'm sure, if asked, the moderators can look into anything suspicious. CONFIRMED. Moderators have superpowers and can see who voted. So, they can easily check if there are any unusual voters.) - but feel free to make your own comments in the comments section - even canvassing support for your favourite rikishi, if you so wish. I won't announce the matches in advance (just keep them secret on my computer), to make every poll new and exciting. I also won't vote, unless needed to, in order to break a tied result. Of course, with 70 rikishi, there will need to be 58 byes of sekitori through to the round of 64 (the triacontakafinals), with the remaining 12 'fighting' to join them in that round. That means that the first two polls will be to decide which 6 rikishi will join that round. Okay, all January 2024 sekitori put into the randomiser, and the top 58 getting first round byes are..... 1. Shonannoumi 2. Tochimusashi 3. Takarafuji 4. Terunofuji 5. Roga 6. Hoshoryu 7. Kirishima 8. Aoiyama 9. Tokihayate 10. Atamifuji 11. Meisei 12. Chiyoshoma 13. Tamashoho 14. Ryuden 15. Myogiryu 16. Kinbozan 17. Mitoryu 18. Oshoumi 19. Kotoeko 20. Ichiyamamoto 21. Wakamotoharu 22. Takerufuji 23. Takayasu 24. Hokuseiho 25. Endo 26. Daishoho 27. Tenshoho 28. Mitakeumi 29. Tamawashi 30. Tobizaru 31. Shodai 32. Shiden 33. Gonoyama 34. Midorifuji 35. Kitanowaka 36. Bushozan 37. Daiamami 38. Oho 39. Tomokaze 40. Takanosho 41. Abi 42. Hakuyozan 43. Nishikifuji 44. Asakoryu 45. Tsurugisho 46. Onosho 47. Hiradoumi 48. Hidenoumi 49. Hokutofuji 50. Yuma 51. Kotonowaka 52. Oshoma 53. Tohakuryu 54. Asanoyama 55. Sadanoumi 56. Shimanoumi 57. Chiyomaru 58. Onosato I can tell you that (in my opinion), some big names remain in the twelve that did not get a bye, so we could have some interesting match-ups straight away. The first 'proper' knock-out poll will be following this one very soon. Edited February 4 by Jejima

I am currently planning to do a round-up poll / post in between each round, to update the situation, but a centralised link with all information would be excellent, which would make sense to be here (I might need to change the title of this thread). I am rather busy in real life (and about 3 months behind schedule in another of my 'fun' non-work, non-family responsibilities), so I am not sure that I would have time to do the round-up justice. But all the information is here, so anybody who does have a little spare time (@Yarimotsu perhaps? ) could do it. I can do the update (here) for the qualifiers, to show how I think it might look, but of course I would be interested to hear from others about how it could be improved - and would be very happy for someone else to take over any update duties.

Wakawakawaka 137 Posted February 4 I'm sure part of it depends on what factors people take into consideration for 'favorite'. For me, 1) 'brand of sumo', 2) 'fighting spirit', and 3) personality are how I'd break it down. I voted Takakeisho because I gave him the edge in categories 1 and 2, however on personality Nishikigi gets the edge, both because I like his (he seems like an easy-going guy), and dislike Takakeisho's (seems like he could be a jerk). That being said I could see why someone would vote for Nishikigi.

Gurowake 3,924 Posted February 8 (edited) Triaconta is a prefix meaning 30, not 32. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numeral_prefix doesn't have a 32, but if you're set on using triaconta, it looks like the analogous one for 32 judging for what they give for 22 would be triacontadyo-. A potential problem with this is that the first few names for rounds (semi- and quarter-) are for fractions (1/2, 1/4), while this is ordinal (32), but it looks like when using Greek prefixes you can use ordinals for fractions too.
