Gounoyama on the other hand was less fortunate and fell to Kinbozan's throw. Somehow getting a vibe lately that Gounoyama has peaked. I hope that's only temporary and he finds the next step soon. Onosato seemed to end up in a slightly unfavourable or uncomfortable position after the tachiai, but nevertheless had no trouble running out Tsurugishou. But I guess Tsurugishou is still carrying that injury which made him easy work for Onosato. Oho went right back to his unnecessary pulling habit and it ended exactly where you'd expect it to -- outside the dohyo. Hope tomorrow he'll move forward more than two seconds. Perhaps not the sumo Kotonowaka wanted to show in his first bout as an ozeki, but nothing wrong with using the opening he saw. From Takakeisho on the other hand you'd expect exactly what he did and yet Asanoyama still fell for it. 7 more wins needed for the ozeki. Very nice katasukashi from Midorifuji pardon me, Ura. Hoshoryuu didn't get much say in this bout. Now Abi yanking down Kirishima that easily was even more surprising than Ura's win. Leaves the impression that Kirishima's concentration is not quite there yet at the start of this basho. Nishikigi! I knew he would be a difficult opponent for Terunofuji for the first bout of the basho. Once he did that nice makikae for the double inside grip, Terunofuji was toast. Ahem, Shodai will definitely lose the next 10 bouts and be on the verge of dropping to Juryo! (now watch him get the yusho...) Nice comment from Hiro Morita -- I would give a uwatenage if Takayasu had the right hand uwate. And if he was black and white, I would say he's a panda bear Onosato made very quick work of Gounoyama. That still reinforces my impression that Gounoyama is in a sort of a slump. Much better from Oho today, smothering Daieisho's attack and following up with good strong two handed pushes! Getting Daieisho's scalp is no easy thing for him, even though Daieisho looks a bit less in form than previous few basho. Speaking of rikishi who seem out of sorts, how about Kirishima? Two-loss start to the basho, today outmuscled by Atamifuji! Wow, Asanoyama shows why exactly he was an ozeki! Kotonowaka was outfought on the oshi and didn't get much chance to recover. Takakeisho was... about what I'd expect from Takakeisho these days. At best 50-50 chance against joi rikishi like Abi. That left Hoshoryuu with the responsibility to uphold ozeki pride today and prevent a shameful clean sweep of 4(!) ozeki. Hoshoryuu seemed more focused and careful today, probably also cause he has experience with Nishikigi's strength and saw him escort Terunofuji out yesterday. Somehow I'd hoped that having four ozeki, three of them young and strong would prevent this kind of madness taking place, but makuuchi is just as much of a roller-coaster as it has been during the previous wild west years. I was going to comment on that before I got totally distracted by unprecedented smiles. In promotion terms Oho got sucked up to M3 by the vacuum in the joi and I'm expecting him to be out of his depth there, so Daieisho going down to him is the upset of the day, IMO. nutzername 16 Posted March 12 Sad to see Daieisho and Hokotufuji in bad form. I'm still hopeful for another comeback from Hokotufuji, not so much for Daieisho. As always, I'm rooting for Takayasu. Today's bout was nothing spectacular or overly convincing sumo. Nonetheless, this bout had a few sideways twists of the back and it seems as if Takayasu didn't flinch at all and seemed rather "fluid" to me.
