If he does show up I would not be surprised if a henka attempt happens

Henka is not a magic spell, you know. Your opponent must believe your tachiai will be strong.

He should sit it out. Hoshoryu will beat Onosato anyway, and it's not worth the potential risk to his body and longevity in sumo.

His longevity is already compromised, I am afraid.

What if they put his foot in enough tape to immobilize it? It doesn't hurt that much, he just needs some stability in his ankle. Going down fighting!

Spoiler

Tape fixes everything?

You are not an engineer perchance?

Everything was going the epic way and here we are, amidst a tragedy. I love Sumo.

This is the most deflating ending imaginable.

Between Tamawashi's somersault on day 13 and day 14's non-mono-ii with Sadanoumi, I'm going full tinfoil-hat tomorrow in Endo-Mitakeumi.

As for Takerufuji's situation, it's awful but I'd prefer he sat this out and just hoped for Hoshoryu's win, but that might not be up to code with bushido or hinkaku or whatever they want to call it. Surely if he's clearly limping, they won't allow him to fight, like they've done with Kotoeko.

Close enough, IT/network guy. It's tape or WD40. In this case i'm going with lots of tape. It'd look like he had elephantiasis, but he could at least use it to some extent.

I don't think it's tinfoil hat at all if Endo wins. Mitakeumi has his KK locked up. If Endo puts up a fight, there's no reason to put in excess work for a win that will just make the next tournament a little bit harder.

i am not sure Endo or Myogiryu will win tonight, but I am not touching their bouts with a 10-foot pole in my games.

Interesting tidbit no one has mentioned yet. Following his Takerufuji bout, Asanoyaka remarked to the NHK interviewer that sumo has a long history, and that he was determined to not be stuck in the record books as the rikishi who allowed the shin-Makuuchi to yusho and make history. So he had a bit of extra determination not to lose.

Unfortunate that it resulted in a catastrophic injury for his record-seeking opponent.

I wish he showed the same determination in trying to regain his Ozeki rank. (Sigh...)

Pure speculation so far from Nikkan on Takerufuji's kyūjō. I guess we'll hear shortly.

In the meantime, here's Wakanohana's take on the situation.

"The thing I'd like to stress to Takerufuji is this - you absolutely shouldn't mount the dohyō if you're clearly not in the condition to. Take my brother, or Kisenosato, as examples that trying to push through a catastrophic injury just to win a yūshō will have long-lasting impacts on the rest of your career.

While a shin-nyūmaku yūshō would certainly be a monumental achievement, you are young and still have many years left [as a rikishi], so I don't want you to attempt the impossible just for the short-term acclaim.

No matter what happens [if you win or or not], your efforts in this basho will not be ignored."

And he can still win even without competing.......I think Hoshoryu will beat Onosato.

He obviously knows his condition better than we do, but if you're wheelchair bound one day, competing this next doesn't sound like a good idea.

What a depressing end to the tournament. I really hope Hoshoryu beats Onosato tomorrow, I'll be annoyed if he wins the yusho in these circumstances.

This is crazy. Even ozumo will not allow an athlete with a torn Achilles tendon on the dohyo.

It seems to me that the only 'allow' would be by the Oyakata not submitting a kyujo request.  Would the kyokai overrule that?

So I am sitting in Dallas eating my dinner at the airport awaiting my 10 pm flight back to Kansas, and this thought occurred to me.    There have been sumotori who got fusen losses because of reasons other than injury (got the date wrong, didn't know I was wrestling today, etc).  What it Takurofuji just didn't come to the ring for the Gonoyama match.  He wouldn't be kyujo, he saves his foot, and he just can wait and see how the Onosato bout comes out.

My apologies to all for my many postings, but when you have to kill 3 hours in an airport, you have to occupy your time somehow.

Down in Jonidan, Ryuo and Tochimaru are both tied at 7-0 going into day 15.  Does the winner of the playoff get an extra banzuke push for May over what the loser gets, even though their official records are both 7-0?  I always sucked at GTB because I don't know all of the ins and outs.

I don't think so.

The only fusen playoff victory I could find was in Sandanme in 1984.

I'm aware of three further playoffs that commenced shorthanded:

1947.06: 5 tied in jonidan with a 4-man playoff (none of them named George)
1995.09: 3 tied in jonidan with a 2-man playoff
1999.09: 7 tied in makushita with a 6-man playoff
