Maybe it's a reverse psychology stunt to get more recruits into ozumo.

"I didn't even like sumo, but just look at me now!"

People with enough talent just tend to go where their talent takes them, even if they don't enjoy the work.

Talent yes, but his body didn't agree - that's why he's injured so often and that means no joy by doing sumo.

His mentor from the Tsugaru Asafuji junior club, where he was member from 5th grad till middle school graduation, told that as he joined he couldn't do push-ups, was stiff at shiko stamping and was too stiff to get down at the matawari leg spread. He told him he'd only teach him when he could do 20 push-ups. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ndf6x4qsFY4

So, he loves the feeling when he achieves something

11th winner from Aomori, but this 38th overall title is the first one in a long time for this former powerhouse source of talent; ozeki Takanonami had been the most recent champion in Kyushu 1997.

The most recent from the Tsugaru region was the shisho, Asahifuji Natsu 1991, and from Goshogawara ozeki Shimizugawa 90 years ago Natsu 1934 o

So with the help of Doctor Moreau we could fabricate one Hakuho and one Hokuseiho out of Takerufuji and Takarafuji...

Seems to be common across sports. Usain Bolt wanted to be a cricketer, IIRC.

But he sure looked like he enjoyed winning the Olympic golds and shattering world records.

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf famously bonded over their hatred of tennis...

With smaller Nishikifuji it looked smaller to me without the 3rd guy in the middle - I had expected there would be one. You're right, it was the new Century

Is that ex-Tokushoryu arranging the honorees?  If so, what a nice touch!

Edit: If a Yusho winner is from a heya that stays 30 km away from downtown, the Toyota Centtury may have to gas up before getting there.

IIRC in their cases, it was more about their parents who forced them to do it for a living rather than hating tennis itself, which probably applies on Endo's and Takakeisho's case at least.

This has been the worst Kotonowaka yusho I've ever seen.

This will also be the worst Kotonowaka-Ozeki-Yusho for the next years

Hakuho no longer involved.

The Century only has to go to the hotel where the party is

So not only has Hakuho been cut from his heya, but also the Toyota Century? Oh the ignominy...

I hope it's only in view of recent events and not permanently, so he should be back next basho. After all, he's still allocated to the press club, so it feels like he should be handling PR-adjacent matters moving forward. Although I'm not sure Shibatayama is exactly the best mentor...

EDIT: I clearly hadn't read the changes in which Sadogatake was appointed as PR head now.

From not being able to win a title in high school or college, not even getting a single sandanme tsukedashi qualification, to blasting out makuuchi elite like nothing. Incredible transformation for Takerufuji since turning pro. My only worry is that his traps may soon swallow his head.

What were his best results in college in terms of SdTD qualification? I recall reading that he beat Nakamura/Onosato a couple of times; was that in smaller tournaments or earlier rounds?

That would've been joint 3rd place in the Interhigh and 4th place in the Kokutai in high school - incidentally, he suffered a major injury in his Kokutai semifinal vs Oho, and thus had to forfeit the bout to determine 3rd place (which was taken by Hoshoryu on fusen).

To my recollection, he never made the top 16 of a major tournament in college, though he did finish runner-up in a weight class event and in either the Kanazawa or Towada national tournament, beating Onosato in the semis but losing the final to Oshoma - that's where the photo of him with Oshoma, Onosato, and Suguro comes from. I know of 4 meetings between Onosato and Takerfuji in the amateurs, with Onosato winning 3. There may have been others I'm not aware of.

He did hurt himself again in college, although it came late in the year (only 1 event was left) and he was back to competing at the start of the next college season in April/May.
