This one worries me the most - what happened to Iron Man? (Eh?)

Seems sensible to me, especially if he's saving himself for that 40th birthday yusho in November.

And jungyo non-appearances don't spoil his unbroken run* of bouts.

I don't think it is that serious, Asahi 2 days ago posted pics from training during the basho - his type of sumo causes short term damage to the knees, not the permanent type of Terunofuji.

AS20240327001761.jpg

But at 39 the damage has piled up

AS20240327001760.jpgo

he is Japanese since during the basho and probably has a kabu in reach - he can go on relaxed now. Better kyujo now than when it matters and endangers his record

Sponichi explicitly says that the neck problem had been there for Kirishima since before the honbasho.

He's just marking time until he can end his career with that 10th yūshō and see another yokozuna born.

As I guessed, we are now finding out the issues that caused Kirishima's awful basho. Why he didn't go kyujo is beyond me -- I did read here that apparently he couldn't have attended the post-basho party and bid farewell to his shiho if he went kyujo, but still...

If that's true, it's emblematic of another stupid rule.  If he hobbles up to Michinoku with a stiff neck and shakes his hand, will someone from the Sumo Police force him to get back in bed?

[I know of a rikishi with a real bad ankle who's gallavanting all around northern Honshu picking up heavy bags of rice and veggies].

The Ise Shrine tournament matchups has been released and as bow-twirler is… Asanowaka? Well, if Yuki retired and Satonofuji is not doing it because Teru is not participating

Day 1 Ise - about 3000 watched the tournament

Terunofuji at the start event had double work though: a dohyo-iri at the shrine and then at the tournament

First a shrine visit by the NSK top, 5 riji & 2 ozeki + Inosuke

Watching then included deputy jungyo chief Wakamatsu, jungyo top Sakaigawa was absent - no idea what Tamagaki, in a suit, was doing there, then kore yori sanyaku of the just 6 present on location - Hoshoryu still looking fine - and the yokozuna dohyo-iri

From Nishikigi's score, I thought he would also have been injured, but I guess he is not, since he's taking part in the jungyo? Why did he do so poorly last basho? Is it normal to get this kind of scores for "new" san'yaku?
