Watching the Hoshoryu-Hiradoumi-Shinosuke pas de trois reminds me that "if you want to post something on Ridiculous Predictions, it's got to be even more ridiculous than that."

All that match needed at the end was John Cleese to announce "And now for something completely different."

Wasn’t there a predecessor who point while being stretchered down the hanamichi?

That was a very efficient bout for Kainoshima.

Onojo vs Naya Round 2 ended with Naya winning very efficiently as well.

Aoiyama, not doing so well. "Not so much the pain, but the fear.. Afraid to get hurt ." He trained for the first time during this basho in the morning against heyamate rising star Tochitaikai, seemed to have helped?

Chiyomaru- "Not so much the pain, but there is an uneasiness in my shoulder.."

Ounokatsu loses again to Kazekenou, who beat him last basho for the yusho in Makushita. First loss this basho.

Tamashouhou, coming off 4-11 and 6-9 bashos is looking good now for a reason- he trained extra hard before the basho and is now on a  four bout winning streak.

Chiyosakae- trained hard during the jungyo, says he's feeling good. Loses today.

Takanosho channeled Pai Mei today: watching the replay it looked like he threw off Tamawashi's nodowa using his chin!

Has Mitakeumi finally recovered? Much fighting spirit and tenacity on show. His style has evolved somewhat, too.
The 'curse' seems to have passed on to Kirishima now...

Hoshoryu blasted Gonoyama off the dohyo, but I was more impressed by Kotozakura methodically shutting Tobizaru down before easing him out.
Bit weird that the Monkey decided he was going to fall anyway.

Takadagawa-san took a few hits today...

It's easy to overlook how strong Wakamotoharu is, but overpowering Atamifuji like he did today is no small feat.

After a fairly disastrous start, much better from Hokutofuji today. At 2-3 he still can go for kachikoshi if he can continue doing effective pushing sumo like today's bout.

Takanosho should've yelled Timber! before stepping out of Tamawashi's way like that. At least the shimpan would've been spared.

Nishikigi seems more hapless than usual this basho. No Terunofuji for him to beat and get a consolation kinboshi either. Easy win for in-the-zone Ura.

No staredown no issue for Hoshoryuu. Maybe Gonoyama wasn't psyched enough to take on his senpai. In any case after a good start Gonoyama has been losing momentum.

Wow, a perhaps contentious decision to count Onosato's win against Kirishima. I do think it was correct though as Kirishima's whole body was hovering out of the dohyo boundaries as Onosato stepped out. Still, Onosato has to be careful as that could've ended worse for him. Kadoban Kirishima is running out of his loss cushion fast.

And if I'm not mistaken, technically a mono-ii could've also been called for Kotozakura as he seemed to step out a split second before Tobizaru touched the ground outside the dohyo. But by all accounts Tobizaru had already lost the bout by then so I'm glad the shimpan are willing to be flexible.

Ura in the lead after five days, but how far can he go? I'm sure Kotozakura and others can already smell a chance.

This may look awfully silly by this time tomorrow but am predicting Wakaikari vs Aonishiki for the makushita yusho.

Mitakeumi blasted away, then got pushed and lumbered around like a drunk, then took hold of Meisei's mawashi and outmuscled him off the dohyo.  Clearly, this was Mitakeumi's homage to his buddy Takayasu.

Shonosuke didn't come out unharmed after two times collapsing yesterday, Hiradoumi bumped into him and Hoshoryu brought him down again by stepping on his kimono as he tried to get up - a blow to his physical and mental strenght: of course he couldn't do the kaobure announcement today - and he called out the new guy as Kotonowaka at the kachinanori.

He didn't have to hand in his resignation for this.

I don't understand the Onosato decision. Looked to me that Onosato was both in the air first and landed first.

Especially impressive given that Gonoyama launched while Hosh was still in the process of putting his hands down.

At least when I saw the replay they were probably looking for where Kirishima was. When Onosato did step Kirishima was flying so he may have been dead body

Yeah maybe because Onosato was further inside the dohyo they neglected to look at Onosato's feet. I agree Kirishima was dead body (well as far as I understand it) but Onosato definitely looked dead body first -  two feet in the air and heading out the dohyo must qualify!

None of this takes away from Kirishima's poor sumo of course...

Shibatayama on NHK said that Onosato was out first and that it was a difficult decision - of course nobody there questions the shimpan decision. The explanation by Kokonoe was a lie though: mono-ii because they might have been out at the same time, but Onosato's body had remained - it hadn't, he should have said Kirishima was dead flying, which the NHK announcer added to save the face of the shimpan in the eyes of the spectators.

Edit: I looked at the wrong day's schedule - the shimpan are annoyed that Kirishima doesn't gambarize more and punish him

It looks like they go airborne exactly at the same time. Onosato touches first but both are well outside at that point. Should have been a redo IMHO.

How about Haruyama?

There are a few undefeated guys left who could run the table, but Kiryuko fights Wakaikari tomorrow and won in their previous meeting.

Think Onosato is hurt or just trying something new? His style seems different than it has been the past 2 tournaments.
