Katooshu 3,087 Posted May 3 (edited) Individual winner is Takushoku's Masaharu Goshima, a 176cm/170kg bulldozer who made easy work of most opponents with his powerful forward moving sumo. His match in the finals wasn't so easy though, as he overcome a strong effort from towering Toyo Mongolian Ogtonbat. 3rd place goes to Kanazawa Gakuin's Yasuhiro Omori, who beat NSSU's Christopher Lee in the match of losing semifinalists - Omori had lost to Goshima, Lee to Ogtonbat. Nihon's Masaki Hanaoka, who won several titles last year, lost his first match in the individuals, while last year's All Japan Championship 2nd place Bucheroon (NSSU) lost in the best 8 to Goshima. Bucheroon otherwise won all his matches, including beating Ogtonbat and Omori in the teams, and looked on form. The team championship went to Toyo University, which downed NSSU 4-1 in the finals. Nihon defeated Kinki U in the battle for 3rd. As the first competition of the year, it's interesting to see who is featuring in the starting lineup for the first time - many new faces. Katooshu 3,087 Posted May 26 (edited) Goshima won another tournament. This time the college-corporate Wakayama tournament, winning the final against speedy pusher Takeuchi, who graduated from Nihon U a few years ago and has been achieving personal best results after graduation. Mongolians Bucheroon (NSSU) and Ogtonbat (Toyo) continue with their good results too, finishing joint third. Team event was won by streaking Kanazawa Gakuin, who beat Nippon Sports Science University in the finals. Bucheroon won all his matches in the team event for NSSU, but his team mates couldn't quite keep up. Edited May 26 by Katooshu 1

Katooshu 3,087 Posted June 1 (edited) I've seen him listed at 181cm, though it's still possible to grow a bit in college. The guy to his right is the tallest competitor on the college scene at the moment, listed at 196cm. He was only 90kg starting his 2nd year at NSSU (below), but has beefed up to around 120kg. He comes from a wrestling background and like Oshoma was a national champion in wrestling in Japan during high school. Edited June 1 by Katooshu

Katooshu 3,087 Posted June 10 (edited) The East Japan University Championship took place the other day Nippon Sports Science University won the team final 4-1 over Tokyo Agricultural. NSSU is a giant of a team right now, with 5 starting caliber competitors 186cm or taller. Joint 3rd went to Toyo and Takushoku. Nihon University went out with a whimper, losing first to an entrant from the B-class tournament, then having to come back from 2-1 down to beat another B entrant, before getting dropped by Takushoku in the first round of knockouts. The individual final came down to arguably the top two college competitors this year, with Takushoku bulldozer Masaharu Goshima winning by yoritaoshi over Nihon U technician Masaki Hanaoka. Goshima adds this title to the two national events he won earlier in the year, plus a runner-up in the Kyushu national event (Hanaoka beat him that time). Joint 3rd to Haruki Ezure (Toyo; lost to Goshima) and consistently high finishing Mongolian Bucheroon (NSSU; lost to Hanaoka). Timestamped for individual final - Goshima vs Hanaoka Edited June 10 by Katooshu 3

Koorifuu 860 Posted June 10 May I ask whether Yuuma Shino was someone already under the radar, or was his victory unexpected and/or due to a lower level of competition?
Katooshu 3,087 Posted June 11 (edited) Individually he won two national tournaments in high school and was runner-up in another for Kanazawa Gakuin High School, making him a top performer in his age group. That should have set standards fairly high for university, and so far he's done well, having finished 2nd at the West Japan Rookie tournament and 3rd at the main West Japan event last year as a freshman. West Japan's talent pool is much shallower than East Japan's, but still strong enough that those results are impressive. He's already a starter on his team as well, which is arguably the best it's been in years - a bit ironic that they only finished 3rd here despite multiple team wins nationally and sweeping the individuals. I'd say he was on the radar at least as far as West Japan events go, though his name doesn't pop up much so far in individual competition at national events. Katooshu 3,087 Posted August 14 (edited) NSSU just beat Nihon University again, this time downing them 4-1 in the final of the National Towada tournament. Individual winner, after many 2nd and 3rd place finishes, is the tallest competitor in college sumo, Ogtonbat of Toyo University. He beat Kanazawa Gakuin's Yasuhiro Omori by yoritaoshi in the yusho match, and showed a good mix of oshi and yotsu sumo throughout. Third place was Takushoku's Goshima, who even on an off day (looked stiff legged and sore at times) makes it near the finals. He won the third place match over the other semifinal loser, Nihon University's Ryusho Kawakami. Regular high finisher Masaki Hanaoka lost in the best 8 to Goshima, after having beat him in the team event earlier. Edited August 14 by Katooshu
Katooshu 3,087 Posted August 15 (edited) In the high school version of the Towada tournament, held the next day, Saitama Sakae triumphed in the team competition (rare national victory for them these days), while Tottori's Nishimura took the individual title, following up on his yusho in Kanazawa earlier this year. He is probably the high school #2 at the moment. Runner-up was impressive Kinki High 1st year Shigemura, who had also lost to Nishimura 2 years ago in the match to determine middle school yokozuna. Losing semifinalists were from Tottori and Kinki as well (the semis were Tottori vs Tottori; Kinki vs Kinki). Son of Kotomitsuki, Aiki Tamiya, competed in the event and performed fairly well, but needs to make up ground to catch middle school rival Shigemura again. High school kingpin, back to back interhigh winner Daiki Nishide, seems to have sat this one out. Edited August 15 by Katooshu 1
