Sakura 1,495 Posted July 16, 2024 (edited) Assuming all intra-sanyaku matches take place, then Takakeisho will need to beat at least two [1] sanyaku and Kirishima three to be Ozeki next basho. [1] Having lost to a Meisei, he now needs two instead of one. Edited July 16, 2024 by Sakura

Aoiyama himself basically hatakikomi-ed his way into sanyaku 10 years ago. His technique is still the same, give a few thrusts to make the opponent move forward and then aim for a pulldown, except back then his thrusts were much stronger and mobility better. It was very effective, but quite annoying to watch.

Kintamayama 45,518 Posted July 16, 2024 Enhou won today. In Juryo, Tsurugishou and Asakouryuu (brother breathing down his neck soon?) are looking very solid. Tsurugishou never ceases to wonder me. No keiko before the basho, bum knee, heavy guy, yet keeps winning. I hoped he would revert to his real name when he dropped to Juryo, but he didn't. I will cheer him on regardless and quietly call him Abiko when nobody is listening.

DonKordylone 9 Posted July 16, 2024 Wakamotoharu looked like a power makushita wrestler against Terunofuji, What the Hell.
Leoben 146 Posted July 16, 2024 Terunofuji is looking much better than I expected. I'm so used to him dropping matches against lesser opponents that 3-0 is surprising. I hope the painkillers he must be popping like candy can keep him going so he can finally get his 10th.
RabidJohn 1,855 Posted July 16, 2024 (edited) I expected Wakamotoharu to give Terunofuji a bit more of a fight than that. The yokozuna is looking fairly good, atm. --- Audience Watch: Nagoya's hot, right? Rikishi openly concerned about heat exhaustion and an arena full of folk fanning themselves. All except the excitable guy sitting just behind the ringside gyoji, wearing what looked like a fur-trimmed 'Father Christmas' jacket - and a hat! Koorifuu 1,020 Posted July 16, 2024 (edited) Aaand I've just watched Kotokenryu v Nihonyanagi. I see that the Nagoya way to treat clearly concussed rikishi is still to tell them where they should go, and watch impatiently as they stumble around. EDIT: OK, there were two people slightly helping him off the dohyo, sure. Edited July 16, 2024 by Koorifuu
Morty 1,505 Posted July 16, 2024 I feel like we're watching the last days of Takakeisho. His body looks (and probably is) completely broken and his style and size requires him to be fully fit to be successful. He has managed to wring every little possible bit out of that body to have an extremely successful career, but it looks like it is finally failing him. I hope he rallies and gets to 8 wins, but it looks dubious to me. If he drops below Ozeki I hope he goes intai so that he can stop punishing himself, and so he may be able to walk and live relatively pain free into old age.

dingo 1,294 Posted July 16, 2024 I thought Hokutofuji might do better this basho, but he seems to have lost his forward moving power and hasn't got much else to fall back on. Unless he can find a second gear soon juryo might be looming. Churanoumi wiggled like an eel but Asanoyama had his eel-catching grip ready and didn't allow Churanoumi to slip away. Very solid so far from Asanoyama. Kotoshoho finally woke up today and delivered straight out denshamichi sumo to Sadanoumi who had been solid for the first two days but was simply unable to defend against that kind of power. Oho let Takanosho get into his groove and once one the back foot could only try a half-hearted desperate pulldown attempt which obviously didn't work. Good win for Takanosho, disappointing sumo by Oho. Not sure why Ura thought moving backwards and trying a pulldown against speedy Tobizaru was a good idea. Perhaps he was stuck to his habitual fighting mode against bigger rikishi, or perhaps he felt he spotted an opening. In any case that was a very wrong move and Tobizaru exploited it immediately. Onosato seemed lacking confidence so went for the easy pulldown against Daieisho instead of trying to match him in a pushijg contest. After 2 losses I don't blame him, though it's not exactly ozeki like sumo. If Onosato wants to raise in rank (not this basho anymore obviously), he needs to seriously impress the NHK powers for the rest of the basho. Hiradoumi finally got his chance to fully utilise the fiery forward moving sumo he does and got a good win against Abi who seems to be out of sorts. Mitakeumi again not low enough at the tachiai and for the second day in a row that proved to be his undoing. Seems like his day 1 win against Onosato was more of a fluke aided by Onosato's unpreparedenss. Kotozakura didn't have to do anything special to beat Meisei, just solid fundamentals and staying focused. Meisei on the other hand is not quite at his best this basho. Takakeisho had a very good plan but simply lacked the accuracy and power to finish it off and Atamifuji didn't allow him the time to regroup. Escaping kadoban seems more and more difficult for the ozeki. Wow, what did Terunofuji eat before the basho? Whatever it was it's given him a serious appetite for the yusho again. It's still early in the basho but the yokozuna seems intent to go all the way. We'll have to see whether his body holds up. 1
Joaoiyama 313 Posted July 16, 2024 At this point they might just mummify Tsushimanada and send him to the dohyo.

Yup. And I think we are going to have to get used to him being around in the business end of makuuchi for the next decade. My cat Bob sometimes catches shrews. Shrews are tiny little mouse-shaped creatures which makes Bob's inclination to catch them perfectly understandable. However, the shrew is actually a super-aggressive mini-predator whose natural instinct is to attack, kill and eat anything that crosses its path. This leads to a conflict of interest. Bob is saying "Hey mouse, why don't you either die or try to run away, as is the custom?" Shrew replies "Ah screw you you big smelly b*stard, I wanna fight!". It sometimes ends badly for the shrew but more often than not Bob thinks "sod this for a lark" and beats what he intends to be taken as a dignified retreat. Hiradoumi is the shrew.

It's pretty easy work for him as millions of years of evolution have equipped him perfectly for the task. Occasionally he will pounce on a shrew by mistake. Shrews are about the same size as a mouse but are mini-carnivores with bucketloads of meanness and aggression. The results are a whole lot of squeaking, a startled and discomfited cat and, eventually, a dead shrew. It's a bad day for Bob, who might need a trip to the vet for an antibiotic shot, but it's a worse day for the shrew, who is resting in peace at the bottom of my wheelie-bin. Terunofuji is the cat. Takakeisho is the shrew.
