I think at least one rikishi is going to beat Terunofuji to make the yusho run more interesting, but who will it be?

They'd better hurry up he's close to going 3 clear.

As a Terunofui fan the one I was a bit worried about was Wakatakage who I thought could easily go 8-0 or 7-1 in the first week. He's at 5-3 however, which isn't bad for his first time back, but not the foundation he would need for a yusho run.

I can't see Teru losing 3 in the second week and I can't see either Churanoumi or Shodai winning, which just leaves Kotozakura as a realistic challenger.

Wow, Takakeisho was about the last rikishi who I expected to beat Kirishima, but it happened!

What's more, that win probably won't help either of them.

Assuming all intra-sanyaku matches take place, then Takakeisho can afford a loss to the Yokozuna and another loss amongst the group of Kotozakura, Hoshoryu, Abi and Onosato, but he'll have to beat at least three of them (assuming he beats all remaining maegashira).

Kirishima can afford a loss to the Yokozuna but would have to beat all remaining rikishi including Kotozakura and Abi.

Takerufuji returned today, was chucked in against the best man in the division so far, and beat him decisively. One more win and he's safe.

He's not had much joy with them so far (4 losses out of 5) so that seems very unlikely.

I have enjoyed seeing him slap above his height for such a long time and admire his grit but I'll be glad if he decides to retire.

I think he's fine already, unless the promotion/demotion picture gets crazy. We're already down to maybe 4 guys in Ms who could push him down by winning out, some of them will pick up losses, and there's no shortage of demotion candidates in lower Juryo.

Much more likely, actually.

I hope not :( This is his best shot at reaching Dai-Yokozuna status!

I know it's a bit early for banzuke predictions (who am I kidding?) but I can see a couple of hard luck stories looming into view like a pair of ugly goats. Daieisho and Hiradoumi are cracking along nicely at komusubi and look set fair for their KKs but there is unlikely to be any room at the sekiwake inn... which in turn means no vacancies at the komusubi b&b... and gosh this lemon vodka is awfully nice....

At the moment, there's a distinct shortage of komusubi candidates, so maybe this is for the best ... 7 days to go, I know ...

I was just thinking that Atamifuji hasn't been particularly successful this basho, and then he goes and beats Wakamotoharu with some solid yotsu sumo. Kachikoshi is not impossible yet, though he still has to face a few tough opponents including the yokozuna.

Atamifuji will not face the Yokozuna.

If Kazuma beats his Sandanme opponent, there will be 5 5-0s in Makushita, so there is a possibility of a playoff at 7-0 in Makushita.  The last time this happened was 2016.  It's happened 40 times since the current era of 7 lower division matches, and the first time it happened there were somehow 3 at 7-0 and only two were from the same heya. There aren't are records of their schedules outside of the playoff and the matches in Juryo, so maybe they did something different then.

Rikishi from Dewanoumi-beya and Kasugano-beya did not face each other before 1965.

I mean he is way more likely to be stopped by injuries than by his remaining opponents.

What happened with Chiyoshoma? On the one hand i'm glad he's back and kicking butt, but his own butt looks like someone tore him a new one.

You mean with all the bandages? He's been recovering from hernia surgery.

It's going to be interesting if he can actually get his kachi-koshi and not leave a blemish on his perfect record, because full kyujos don't count, right? I'd bet that with an 8-0-7 they might even promote him for Onosho if push came to shove.

The multiplication of sekiwakes could actually be real. We need that S3 slot to reappear for the 2nd time in history. Link We might even get a S3w rather easily (think Takakeisho demoted, the 3 incumbent keeping their ranks and just one of the komusubis getting to 10 wins).

Terunofuji surely wants that black background on his name at the Supermegahypersumograph. @yorikiried by fate, prepare the brushes.

Nishikigi, on the other side, is looking like maybe his back is troubling him. I wrote him down 3 years ago in lower juryo but he came back with a vengeance and got the best results of his life by just being no-nonsense and stronk. This basho he's losing face way too easily and can't even use his strenkth. Pity.

On the juryo side, everything's coming up Milhouse. Shishi (still with his wacky posture) leads and Tohakuryu is getting his ass thoroughly kicked (though the wanker will surely end up 5-10 just to spite me)

Odds Terunofuji retires after getting his 10th, especially if it's a zensho or near? I've only experienced Hakuho retiring and can see why he'd go for more, but also why you'd want to go out with a bang

He's said on more than one occasion that his goal is to get to double digit yushos, so given the condition of his body it's certainly not inconceivable that he might call it quits at that point.

Just managed to catch some sumo for the first time in a while, and is it just me or has Kirishima chonked up and not in a good way?
