Torn muscles sometimes are in a state where they can't really be made much worse, so it's not as surprising that he's continuing with this injury as it would be with some others. There was an NFL player a few years ago, can't remember who, who had essentially the same injury. He said in an interview that the docs told him it wouldn't get worse, it would just be hard to function with, so he taped it up and as long as he could do his job reasonably well, he said he'd be out there. And, as I recall, he didn't miss any games.

Well, it's not like going kyujo is his ticket up either, but I get your point. At least 25% of the discussion each basho seems to be about this conundrum (which is endemic to Ozumo). Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted May 19, 2024 Ahead of Day 9 we have five rikishi returning to the basho after brief absences: Ms6e Tenshoho (withdrew Day 7) Ms22e Tanji (fusenpai Day 4, withdrew Day 5) - precaution after a whack on the head, as mentioned here. Koorifuu 1,020 Posted May 19, 2024 Amazing how so many people have gone kyujo 1~2 days after facing Onosato and yet none of those seem to have been directly related to it.

Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted May 21, 2024 This time we see four withdrawals, ahead of Day 11: Ms8e Chiyonoumi - could offer only a token resistance in his last bout, though it's not obvious what the problem is. Ms39e Oshoryu (fusenpai Day 9) - injured his left knee in his bout on Day 7, said Naruto-oyakata (former Ozeki Kotooshu). Sd26w Kyokumizuno (fusenpai Day 10) Jd40e Togyokuko (fusenpai Day 10) - tested positive for COVID, said Tamanoi-oyakata (former Ozeki Tochiazuma).

Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted May 23, 2024 As we reach the last round of lower division action, six rikishi are entering the basho for one bout, one returns to action, and three more have to withdraw. Among the late starters are Miyagino refugees Kawazoe and Chikuba. Entering/Returning: Sd84e Kawazoe Jd33w Chikuba Jd40e Togyokuko (fusenpai Day 10, withdrew Day 11) Jd67e Michihaya Jk15e Soseizan Jk18w Kakuho Jk19e Sadanojo Withdrawing: Sd62e Yamato (fusenpai Day 12) Sd86e Kotoegashira (fusenpai Day 11) Jd76e Sonoshun (fusenpai Day 12) - another COVID kyujo Assuming they don't retire, the following rikishi will drop off the banzuke: Jk1e Satsumao Jk2e Wakayamanaka Jk2w Shosei Jk14e Makotofuji Jk20e Higohikari I think Shosei suffered an achilles tendon injury when he last fought. Turning 38 the day after the basho, I wonder if this is it for him.
