Torn muscles sometimes are in a state where they can't really be made much worse, so it's not as surprising that he's continuing with this injury as it would be with some others. There was an NFL player a few years ago, can't remember who, who had essentially the same injury. He said in an interview that the docs told him it wouldn't get worse, it would just be hard to function with, so he taped it up and as long as he could do his job reasonably well, he said he'd be out there. And, as I recall, he didn't miss any games.

Well, it's not like going kyujo is his ticket up either,  but I get your point.  At least 25% of the discussion each basho seems to be about this conundrum (which is endemic to Ozumo).

Ms39e Oshoryu (fusenpai Day 9) - injured his left knee in his bout on Day 7, said Naruto-oyakata (former Ozeki Kotooshu).

Jd40e Togyokuko (fusenpai Day 10) - tested positive for COVID, said Tamanoi-oyakata (former Ozeki Tochiazuma).

I think Shosei suffered an achilles tendon injury when he last fought. Turning 38 the day after the basho, I wonder if this is it for him.
