Kensho Natsu 2024

Recommended Posts

2254 kensho planned, 404 more than last year (Nikkan wrongly reported 250). 12 new sponsors, personal kensho top is still Takakeisho with 230, then Kotozakura with 179 and Mitakeumi with 98 - Asanoyama is out, he would be above that. 4 to 7 ranked are Hoshoryu, Terunofuji, Kirishima and Tobizaru - Onosato is at 8 with 74 kensho. New makuuchi Tokihayate already has a personal sponsor: Fuji Bow puts one on his bouts, with an already applied for option to increase the numbers, if he wins on day 1 and 2. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202405110000428.html

A record number of 8 new banners at the regular maker's site http://tomac-kuramae.co.jp/biz/prizelist/

One of them with serious interest in sumo is ryokan Tantoku Garden from Kawagoe, Saitama. They put their new kensho on the new Kotozakura, as a Saitama Sakae high OB.

Akita Sakihokore rice has again kensho by the prefecture, they are for Oho bouts https://common3.pref.akita.lg.jp/kenjinkai/archive/news/13735

The 3 from LDH are back, like often on Kotozakura today, Moderna on the Onosato bout, as was the Morinaga-sho (M).
3 Nagatanien on the remaining regulars Teru- and Atamifuji - both Endo gone and Asanoyama out -> on day 1 two each on the other ozeki who don't meet Atamifuji: Kotozakura, Takakeisho, Kirishima
Tomorrow Onosato gets 2 from them, Moderna on Kotozakura, LDH on Tokihayate.
Takasu will be there for both parts of makuuchi, he has 5 kensho on Takanosho-Nishikigi as the last bout of the first half and only 2 on Hoshoryu, on other days like today Hoshoryu has 1 from him.

Daieisho with the no.2 in kensho, Atamifuji in the last ozeki bout plus more sponsors for him, Hiradoumi with the no.1 in kensho, but likely none on him personally. Gonoyama with the least popular ozeki and maybe also no personal sponsor yet.

Day 1 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2405_01.pdf

48:    Onosato (M)

Plenty of distributions today, the last and 3rd to last bout with 2 big packs both canceled is maybe a first. Of the 31 for the last bout, 18 go to the new last bout Kotozakura-Atamifuji, 7 to Kirishima-Hiradoumi and 1 to Hoshoryu-Abi - 5 are canceled.

Of the 17 for Takakeisho-Gonoyama, 7 go to the new last bout and 10 are canceled.

http://www.sanspo.com/article/20240513-L7XOALNVVRJ55NYS3H3QY3TTAQ/

That doubles the pack in reach for Atamifuji - will that fire him up to get the next ozeki scalp? The kensho total for the basho drops by nearly 300 with this.

Abema is doing the best to hide the Morinaga-sho, cutting the hall announcement just when the bout was named, hiding the parade - a glimpse of the banner being folded remained visible - and NHK showed it parading. Kotozakura annoyingly gets reported with the simple kanji for sakura and not the one he uses - causing me more work - both in the pics and the lists like here.

Tomorrow Kotozakura stays as the ozeki to get 2 Nagatanien kensho, with Onosato -  a cheap basho for them with only Atamifuji as a 3 kensho regular. A for an early Kirishima bout unbelievably big ozeki pack for him again in reach, today the shisho was on TV and he failed to get the biggest one so far. LDH on Oshoma-Tomokaze, Moderna on Onosato again, we'll see if also the Morinaga-sho stays on him.

With the usual kensho heavyweights Terunofuji and Takakeisho out, let's see if Kotozakura comes out on top or will he be challenged by the other ozeki or dark horse Oonosato. Will be interesting!

Atamifuji joined the top 3 of 60 and above with that biggest pack of day 3 - 3rd biggest of the basho with 41, Onosato drops to 3rd place. Hoshoryu has yet to join the top 10, Daieisho today was worth less than Hiradoumi yesterday for Kirishima, though he is no.4 in personal kensho and Kirishima only no.6.

Day 3 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2405_03.pdf

63:    Kotozakura
62:    Atamifuji
60:    Onosato (M)
27:    Daieisho
24:    Mitakeumi
20:    Hiradoumi
16:    Oshoma
14:    Ura
14:    Takayasu
12:    Kirishima
12:    Abi

Tokihayate had lost the kensho on his bout from Fuji Bow already on day 2 after his loss on day 1, they switched that to heya mate Shodai - maybe he'll get it back after a first win.

Tomorrow Kirishima is added to the Nagatanien group with 2 and Onosato dropped instead for their win/loss on day 2 - should switch again for day 5. Moderna stays on Onosato, LDH is on Shonannoumi vs. Hokutofuji.

The biggest pack (50) of the basho so far on day 2 for Kotozakura

Kotozakura most likely will stay on top till the end, only injury can prevent it. Oshoma is a surprise: as a new makuuchi he already has 3 personal kensho - and attracts plenty of others for his bouts, like LDH on day 3. On day 2 he had 4 and was just outside the rankings.

The Morinaga-sho switched to Atamifuji, took me some time to find it.

Day 4 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2405_04.pdf

16:    Oshoma

Tomorrow Kirishima-Onosato, so Nagatanien doesn't have to switch yet. LDH on Kinbozan-Kotoshoho, Moderna on Atamifuji-Wakamotoharu

Day 3 packs

the biggest of the day - Atamifuji can't believe his luck

Hoshoryu will likely get to 2nd place in the end and Kirishima into the rankings, Onosato on the way to 3rd place, Atamifuji to 4. The surprise of the basho is Oshoma - same kensho supply as Ura, the difference is the one day he didn't get.

Day 5 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2405_05.pdf

131:    Kotozakura
84:    Onosato (M)

22:    Ura
20:    Hiradoumi
20:    Abi
19:    Oshoma

Tomorrow Nagatanien gets generous: after the 3 for Atamifuji, the last 5 bouts with all the remaining sanyaku have 2 each. LDH on Kotozakura-Onosato, Moderna on Hoshoryu-Tobizaru. We'll see if Tokihayate gets his kensho back for day 7.

That was the 3rd big pack for Onosato, one left - he got all available so far, but Hoshoryu will catch him later on, even if he loses to him. Oho with a surprise appearance, yesterday he had 2, today the last bout pack of 39 - an even bigger one in reach tomorrow.

Day 6 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2405_06.pdf

131:    Kotozakura

45:    Daieisho
41:    Oho
40:    Mitakeumi
30:    Ura
24:    Hiradoumi
23:    Oshoma

Tomorrow Tokihayate doesn't get his Fuji Bow kensho back and Shodai also no longer gets it. Cheaper day for Nagatanien - they drop Kirishima and Onosato meets Atamifuji, only the 2 other ozeki get 2 from them. Moderna back to Onosato, LDH on Onosho-Gonoyama.

Day 5 - kensho for the wrong guy: Shonosuke wanted to give them to Kotonowaka

A pity he had only 2 big packs in reach - top 5 should be guaranteed now for Takayasu. Hoshoryu needs to win the last bouts, on a plain day he has less than Onosato - and tomorrow is the crucial one where the 2 meet.

Sole leader now Shonannoumi had very few kensho so far (10 in all), usually 1 or 2 - 4 times none - the biggest pack (5) when LDH was on his bout, the bigger one with Mitakeumi he didn't get.

Day 11 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2405_11.pdf

The top 3 are more or less fix now in that order, likely the top 4. Mitakeumi may still drop down - he won't win another and there are big ozeki packs in reach for those lingering below. Oshoma is in the rankings because Abi only had a meager pack from the leader, but he needs more wins to stay. Tomorrow the Wakamotoharu bout has no extra - just his average 4 kensho - a (not the) big bunch for Shonannoumi(-Kotozakura) - not enough to get him into the rankings if he wins, Hoshoryu back in the Nagatanien group - and once more both LDH and Moderna on Onosato(-Ura).

Not much change, none to come - tomorrow both ozeki and Onosato are upgraded to 3 Nagatanien kensho, and also Daieiesho has 3 - Atamifuji as the one with a contract gets 4. LDH after a while back to where they started, on Kotozakura, Moderna on Atamifuji-Ura.

Abi day today - and there's another big one in reach for him tomorrow, about 32 kensho. Abi and Atamifuji can overtake Takayasu, Oho can surpass Atamifuji.

Day 14 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2405_14.pdf

315:    Kotozakura
226:    Hoshoryu
190:    Onosato (M)
117:    Takayasu
110:    Atamifuji
105:    Oho
101:    Abi
91:    Daieisho
60:    Mitakeumi
55:    Hiradoumi

Nagatanien has saved a lot of their contingent this basho and is generous at the end: tomorrow 5 kensho on Atamifuji and kensho on all yusho relevant bouts, 5 for the first with Daieisho, 5 for the main one Abi-Onosato - but only 3 for the ozeki bout: that bout was already full with 60, also Tama Home has only 3 and 5 for the one before - in such a case apparently the limit for one sponsor is 3. Kotozakura also gets the 3 from LDH again there, Moderna on Tobizaru(-Churanoumi). Likely the Morinaga-sho will be on Onosato like most of the time, so no 61.

Takayasu managed to stay on 4 because the threats all lost and Oho to get to 5 - the top 8 are above 100! Onosato finished very close to the ozeki, possible the best 3rd place ever - and the best 8th place ever for Abi. The top 10 are basically the same since day 10.

Day 15 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2405_15.pdf
