Yes, I've been ready to quote this for 9 years now.

Unfitting end for a respectful career.

I'd grown to appreciate his gatekeeping role in the makushita joi these last few years. If you beat him, you were ready for juryo. If you didn't, you probably weren't.

He debuted the basho I started watching sumo, so I have probably followed him more keenly than most. Three yusho in his first four basho, with easy wins over Kirishima during his early run. He had excellent form with his oshi sumo, but lacked the power to break into the upper half of juryo.

His final bout of the March 2024 basho, vs Kairyu, was one of the better matches you will see. Shame I can't seem to find it to post.

Chiyonoumi wants to make use of his license as teacher for physical education at middle and high schools he obtained at Nittaidai and go for the teacher employment examination for the Tokyo Metropolitan area. He had planned to retired in September, but the employment examination is on July 7th and he prepares for that now. He got into the mood to retire when he dropped from juryo again last year Aki. The danpatsushiki is planned for Feb. 2nd next year in the banquet hall below in the kokugikan.

In the interview with Nikkan he told that in his 4th year at Nittaidai he heard from 2 who became teachers  "I should have gone pro". He wanted to become teacher all along and hadn't joined the NSK, had he not heard the talk from these 2. He started with sumo in primary school and in all did it for about 20 years: all of it was memorable, so he has no special bout to point out.  http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202406030000971.html

He handed in the papers on the 3rd and they were accepted https://www.sumo.or.jp/IrohaKyokaiInformation/detail?id=649

Thanks! It's always fascinating to read about the rikishis' post sumo career plans, especially those who take the less common route and don't go to food industry. Seems like he has a well thought out plan for the future, hope it works out for him.

Clipped from Miselet's archive:

Besides Chiyonoumi's final win it was also Kairyu's final match.

Chiyonoumi on the 8th had an intai - thanks - encouragement rally - to thank his local supporters in Kuroshio, Kochi, with about 120 of them at the event - including PR for the danpatsushiki on Feb. 2nd. He is contract teacher at Tokyo Metropolitan agric. products high school now, studying for the teacher's employment examination next year.

The main danpatsushiki today was that of Chiyonoumi, he had his in the kokugikan basement party floor, with about 300 cutters, many Nittaidai related.
