Kyushu 2024 discussion (results)

Recommended Posts

Again the early PR event for the Kyushu basho: touch the belly of a popular rikisihi, today at the canal city Hakata in Fukuoka https://canalcity.co.jp/news/event/3998

Of course with the Kyushu locals Sadanoumi, Shodai and Hiradoumi, plus the everywhere popular Ura - and new ex-Tenkaiho (Kumamoto) - possibly in the team now - in for Ichiyamamoto, who still appears on the PR photos. With also Kyushu team oyakata Shiranui and Onogawa (likely the one plans this event). First talk, then singing, then the new Kyushu chief Asakayama, then the touching.

rikishi appear after 22min in the live stream:

for 200 via the fan club and 50 via the Canal City facility. Advance sales start on Sept. 14th, the pre-advance ticket lotteries on August 16th

Probably they will also have a poster contest again

The NSK has again a poster campaign, calling for designs https://poster.sumo.or.jp/

Posters of the years before - details as PDF https://poster.sumo.or.jp/PosterWorks

- the whole Kyushu prefectures series with Kotoeko and other designs are not among those shown: only available on the main site for the basho - the posters that will be used are published there in September

3 oyakata from the Kyushu team were at the prefectural office of Miyazaki on the 12th: Onogawa, the vice governor, Mihogaseki (from Saga pref., Kyushu), Shiranui

They presented the plan for a collaboration with Miyazaki prefecture: around the prefecture in shopping areas etc. PR before the basho with posters and banners etc., special booths with Miyazaki produce on sale during the basho vid

The first ticket lottery for Kyushu has started today, for sekiwake course and above fanclub members. The 2nd for makuuchi course and above is from the 23rd till the 26th - costs of 550 yen to change from the free juryo course to that for one month, the one for the general public is from the 30th till Sept. 2nd, and general sales start on Sept. 14th - day 7 of the Aki basho. This is Kyushu, so it may take a few days till a sell-out, but it could also take only a few hours.

I have no idea if the available machine translation of the Japanese pages, which have to be used for the ticket lotteries, is good enough now to enable people without knowledge of Japanese to get tickets - it definitely is possible, but even for Japanese it may be difficult to do the necessary steps to get tickets.

Is the fanclub open to people with an address, phone number and credit card from outside Japan.

The fanclub yes, but sumo.pia, where the tickets are sold, needs a Japanese address for the registration on the Japanese side - you can pick the data of the kokugikan or any other known address.

I was registering following your post, the fanclub asks for a phone number when upgrading to paid - I will be interested to see if the phone and payment method can be foreign or if there will be difficulties

I had no problem with my German credit card, I registered at the fanclub with my twitter and I don't think I had been asked for a phone number when upgrading.

Sales have started, but it is still Kyushu: only the last 2 days sold out so far https://sumo.pia.jp/ticket11.jsp

they have an extra site for the basho https://sumo-kyushu.jp/

Asakayama yesterday was home in Nogata to do PR at the city hall, with the top poster, apparently

Asakayama on the 8th was at the Fukuoka prefectural assembly for the start of the "Kyushu basho support club" - consisting of all assembly members.

The governor said that the Kyushu basho is indispensable for Kyushu as a whole and especially for Fukuoka

The 3 main and the locals posters for the 9 Kyushu prefectures on the basho attraction page https://www.sumo.or.jp/Watching/guide/Nov/room/626/#poster

are still from last year, as are the goods etc. - hopefully they'll update that till the basho.

Tickets are heading for complete sell-out, only for days 3-5 a few masu seats remain. Tickets for the day are to be sold at the venue -  if there are some left https://sumo.pia.jp/vacant/va11.jsp (the page is usually a bit behind - remaining tickets: https://sumo.pia.jp/ticketInformation.do?eventCd=2427475&rlsCd=005)

- apparently the tickets reserved to be only sold on that day are abolished completely

The top made the traditional call to the governor of Fukuoka - chief Asakayama with Onosato, Kotozakura and Terunofuji (without Hoshoryu)

Terunofuji said he wants to be in the basho (I guess he'll go kyujo on day 2) - he can't train yet

The page is updated to this year, with the 3 main posters, the campaign site has the other more than 140 posters as well, which weren't selected https://poster.sumo.or.jp/gallery/gallery2024/

Does anyone here know when the Grand Sumo Preview show will be on?

There was thread on the "Honbasho" thread but it was moved and now it's gone....

No surprise, Terunofuji is kyujo, 2 basho in a row, 12th time in 20 basho as yokozuna.

That sounds like a sad record, but I'm too busy to check right now...

Kisenosato had 10 kyujo in 12 basho as yokozuna - not all full kyujo of course
