Looking through the Kyokai Fanclub torikumi preview, makushita appears to be missing Yago and Oshoryu.

"Miyagino"-beya round-up:

  • All the guys who missed minor time in Natsu basho with Covid or whatever was going around are in (Hakuoho, Tenshoho, Matsui, Onokura).
  • Kawazoe (ex-Kiho) and Chikuba who only did one bout on Day 13 last time are both in.
  • Kenyu (absent in Natsu) and Raiho (absent since Haru) are kyujo again, while Nishikiori (absent in Natsu) and Enho (absent since time immemorial) are both in.
  • Three of the five rikishi who participated in Natsu basho fully are in again (Shinhakuho, Seihakuho, Ono), while Senshoho and Takabaho are absent this time around.

Edit: Incidentally, Enho isn't the only former sekitori who's coming back to action; Tochimusashi is set to compete for the first time since January.

No medical certificate yet but Kokonoe-oyakata (former Ozeki Chiyotaikai) says Chiyoshoma had a second hernia operation. His recovery has been going well and he is already doing light work in a mawashi, so we might see him in the basho later on.

Cruel luck for Takayasu. If he doesn't come back this basho it looks like he will drop to juryo. ONE win would have kept him safe.

He'd have to get a little unlucky for that to happen. Even at zero wins, he only barely drops into juryo (J1W); we'll have to see how many guys put themselves mathematically in makuuchi. I don't think they'll leave him behind someone who calculates to J1E. If someone barely squeaks in, that would create more of a question.

But it's a long way till then.

Arthritis in the right ankle, and worsening of an old PCL injury in the right knee. Surgery is planned, although none of the articles I've seen seem to specify for which injury (or maybe it's two-birds-with-one-scalpel?).

Nikkan and other press report the unsurprising news of Asanoyama's kyujo - torn ACL in the left knee. Surgery in due course and more than six months out of action.

Some good news ahead of Day 7, as one rikishi returns to the basho and four others start:

Ms53e Kaishin (fusenpai Day 2, withdrew Day 3)

Sd50e Fujinowaka

Jd14e Kototaiga

Jd41e Senshoho

Jd78w Togyokuko

And now for the bad news, Otake-beya has reported that Kotetsu suffered an ACL injury, so likely another long-term recovery there.

Given him a nice easy opponent to ease him back in!

Fujitoushi and Kazekenou out in Makushita.

Also Dewanojo and Daishoki (from sandanme, but was in a makushita torikumi today). Outside of the wacky Covid basho, the first day since at least 1989 with 4 fusenpai in makushita matches. Probably since ever, given the much lower prevalence of withdrawals in the more distant past.

Dewanojo not taking advantage of the 160kg(!!) weight difference between him and Suzaki…

As mentioned variously above, four rikishi have to withdraw from the basho ahead of Day 9:

Ms1e Kazekeno (fusenpai Day 7)

Ms13w Fujitoshi (fusenpai Day 7)

Ms20w Ryusei (fusenpai Day 8) - Isenoumi-beya report a pulled right thigh muscle.

Sd1e Daishoki (fusenpai Day 7)

Ms47w Dewanojo, who was also mentioned after his fusenpai on Day 7, has not withdrawn from the basho at this time.

His loss on day 6 was actually pretty peaceful and lacked any fall, so I'm guessing he got defeated by his nemesis, a narrow doorway, on his way to the kokugikan. Thoroughly waiting for the investigative report.

Gawd damn, Kazuma's knee buckles and he's out on a wheelchair in his very first basho. He suffered a bad knee injury in his 3rd year of college that kept him out several months.
