He seems a little "off" this basho. I can't point to any reason for it; no obvious injuries showing or anything like that.

He was barely able to do any keiko leading up to the basho, still nursing prior injuries (went kyujo the previous basho as a reminder).

Still just 25. Still filling out his body. Has a pretty good mentor. Think it's still a bit too early to write him off completely as a yokozuna hopeful.

Special prizes:

Shukun-sho: Wakatakakage

Kanto-sho: Onosato and Nishikigi

Gino-sho: Onosato

All unconditional.

In 5 makuuchi tournaments Onosato has 2 yusho, 1 jun-yusho, and 8 special prizes. Pretty incredible.

Especially when you consider he couldn't win a Makushita or Juryo Yusho.

Some rikishi are just late bloomers.

Yeah, but he lost his first Ozumo match.

Hmm, Yusho + Kanto-sho + Gino-sho is a very unusual combination.

Y + K + G: 3 times before now, most recently Tagaryu in Aki 1984
Y + S + K: 8 times, most recently Shodai in Aki 2020
Y + S + G: 13 times, most recently Onosato himself four months ago

If that's the last we see of Kagayaki in the top division it was good to see him doing his style of sumo and getting a win.

He's bounced between juryo and makuuchi before. I think this basho was just a bad one for him and we'll see him back in makuuchi in a few basho.

Onosato loses to 4-10 Abi, lol that's sumo for you.

To be fair, far from the first time that a Day 14 yusho winner has ended up losing his (for him) meaningless last bout.

This wasn't really surprising in the same way as Hoshoryu's win today. ;-)

Yeah, and the earth is flat and the moon landing was faked.

Only @Terarno picked Abi in SekiToto today, and the 72 other players went with Onosato - so much for not surprising.

Anyone looking forward to Isegahama replacing Kitanofuji as a regular commentator after retiring from the oyakata position?

Did the rikishi have a bingo card with "Bowl the Head Shimpan" on it today?
Poor old Kokonoe got absolutely steamrolled by Takayasu, then got arse-planted by Kotozakura. Very funny to see him immediately wiping his face!

The sumo was reasonably enjoyable, too.

Great to see Shonosuke properly smiling in the hanamichi.

Aoiyama must be makushita bound with his loss today. I wonder if we'll be hearing a retirement announcement soon :-(

And Hakuoho won the Makushita division in his first ever basho and got promoted to Juryo.

Obviously, the Take Your Time method of Nishonoseki is more efficient than the Fire Up Burn Up one of Miyagino

So, the basho is over. Lots of things happened, otsukaresama Takakeisho and Shonosuke, congrats to new ozeki. And to Nishikigi (I'm surprised he got a prize, really happy for him). And Chiyoshoma :-P

I'm glad Onosato finished healthy, hope he will have a long, relatively injury-free career like his shisho. I was actually worried after he went 10-0, 11-0, that he would end up with a grave injury like Kise did in his second yusho. But that was just me being superstitious. I was then somewhat relieved when he got beaten by WTK, in probably the best bout of the basho :-D

3 for Isegahama, 2 for Nihonoseki. Will they split the yusho this year or will someone else claim the last trophy in Fukuoka.

I will be expecting Takerufuji to swing things decisively in favour of Isegahama.

Well, it looks the real Kirishima is back. 12 wins is a good foundation to rebuild his ozekihood.

How many rikishi have both a Y+K+G and a Y+S+G in their entire careers, I wonder?

Onosato looked like a yokozuna when he dispatched Hoshoryu, but against Abi, not so much. Ah well, the kid's got time.
