This seems like quite a recruiting coup for Fujishima, a heya that's not exactly covered in glory.

10 days away from the shindeshi kensa, I think this is everybody we've heard about so far:

Fukuzaki Maaru 福崎 真逢輝 Fujishima MsTd
Goshima Masaharu 五島 雅治 Fujishima MsTd
Soma Shunta 相馬 駿太 Futagoyama
Umeyama Sotaro 梅山 颯大郎 Futagoyama
Osanai Kaimu 小山内 快夢 Hanaregoma
Yasuda Shoma 安田 翔馬 Isegahama
Jin Teppei 神 哲平 Nishiiwa
Sumiyoshi Yuma 住吉 侑真 Nishonoseki
Uchima Haruma 内間 悠天 Nishonoseki
Yokose Haruto 横瀬 陽翔 Oshiogawa
Imada Kosei 今田 光星 Otowayama
Yamagishi Aoi 山岸 蒼生 Otowayama
Kido Taiga 城戸 大河 Tamanoi
Teranishi Ren 寺西 蓮 Tamanoi

Plus unknown short-haired kids were spotted in the background of pictures taken recently at both Ikazuchi-beya and Sadogatake-beya, so those might each have (at least) one recruit, too.

Edit: Forgot about the equally unknown additional Tamanoi recruit(s).

Sakaigawa-beya has one new recruit from Tottori-ken!

Nishonoseki-beya has recruited a middle school grad with a big body and, so the shisho hopes, big prospects. Haruma Uchima 内間悠天 (age not given, but presumably 15) hails from Ie, a moderately-sized village on the island of the same name in the Okinawa archipelago, and will be the second rikishi from the village after Hanaregoma-beya's Shimabukuro. Uchima has been doing sumo since his kindergarten days, with some success both within Okinawa prefecture and beyond, and now sports an astonishing 184 cm / 150 kg physique. Back in December (archive.org), he won the Ryukyu Shimpo Cup in his age group (with Ie Middle School also taking home the team victory), while in January he finished runner-up in the Kototsubaki Cup, another prefecture-level tournament.

Nishonoseki-oyakata (ex-Kisenosato) visited the island last week for the customary greetings with the school and mayor, who promised Uchima that the whole island will be backing him to make it all the way to makuuchi. Nishonoseki complimented Uchima for his athletic abilities and highlighted his decidedly not middle school-like physique, and will try to raise him into a rikishi beloved by everyone. Uchima, for his part, aims to become yokozuna just like the shisho. He's leaving the island on the 22nd to start training at the heya the next day.

Age 15 - 9m report from local NHK about Uchima and the visit of Nishonoseki - aim: yokozuna like the oyakata

5090030776_20250221192505_s.jpgvid

ex-Ryuho was his coach since he was a small child. He had injured his left wrist and in October the year before last had surgery - as 3rd year he couldn't do sumo till late last year, he only did the basics supervised by Ryuho, then shown at the Kototsubaki cup. He had an early graduation ceremony and leaves tomorrow to prepare for the shindeshi kensa.

Kaimu Osanai 小山内快夢 (18, 176cm, 126kg). Ichiyamamoto and Hanaregoma-oyakata today were at Ono Agricultural high school in Hokuto, Hokkaido. Osanai was originally in the rugby club https://rugby-rp.com/2023/08/06/domestic/highschool-rugby/102165 and only less than a year in the sumo club now.

on the right the sumo club coach, a friend of Ichiyamamoto

20250221-OHT1I51007-L.jpgo

In primary and middle school Osanai did soccer, when he entered high school he had close to 100kg and gave rugby a try. In 3rd year he also took part in keiko at the sumo club. After classes, first half rugby, 2nd half sumo. Arranged by the coach he had an experience stay at the heya last October. He also got a call from a first league university rugby club in the Kanto region, but decided to challenge at Hanaregoma-beya, where "a magnificent sempai" is.

The coach on the right is the famous (in amasumo) Yoshiki Fuse - who reached high levels in high school and college sumo with just one arm. Terunofuji named him as one of his inspirations.

For Takasago-beya Rikimaru Kyoda 京田力丸 (22, 184cm, 123kg) from the literature department at Chiba university, linguistics as field of expertise. No sumo club there, he privately went to the Todai sumo club for keiko. A still rare entry from a national university, Takasago-beya is the frontrunner in accepting national university graduates: Ichinoya was the first ever in sumo, Kyoda will be the 2nd for the heya. Black belt in judo, which he did from 5th grade till 1st year at Osaka Seiko gakuin high school. He skipped the job search and concentrated on becoming a rikishi. On the 5th he phoned the heya, telling them his wish to join, 2 days later he had his first visit there. The name Rikimaru caused astonishment - ideal for a shikona (there was one: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=1533). He plans to join the heya before the shindeshi kensa (on the 1st in Osaka).

The Nishikido-oyakata/beya blog has reported a shindeshi joining out of middle school, referred to only as 二川 in the very brief post. Nikawa? Futagawa? The reading of his name will have to remain a mystery for now. (Edit: He's Kosen Futagawa 二川 孔宣.)

With Fujiizumi:

I guess one for Natsu, but until that thread exists I'll add it here - Tamanoi posted a video introducing new recruit Kousuke Gyotoku (行徳康祐), a soon to be Takushoku grad with an Ms60TD from the Kokutai.

Training with Ogtonbat.

I suppose that's all four Tamanoi recruits accounted for and we're "only" getting two of them this basho after all.

Jin started sumo at a dojo in Tsuruta-machi in 2nd year primary school, last year he won the prefectural interhigh. Tsuruta-machi is in the same Tsugaru region as Hirosaki, the hometown of the oyakata.

Nishiiwa-beya will have 3 recruits in total.

Ogtonbat or Otgonbat? Seen both around here over the years...

Otgonbat (Отгонбат) seems to be a common Mongolian name.

The great-great grandson of Tsunenohana, the first yokozuna of the Showa era, which also started 100 years ago this year, 15y old Chikara Yamanobe  山野辺力(ちから) (15), joins the heya of his ancestor, Dewanoumi. He's from Tokyo and started with sumo age 4 and was at the zenchu last year.  o (I can find him neither in the team nor the individuals sumou.zenchuu.jp/eventresult)

photo.jpgo

Tsunenohana was the first dai-yokozuna (= reached 10 yusho), was later Fujishima- and Dewanoumi-oyakata and rijicho.

I know the corporate tournament TD qualifications weren't used much, but when they were the rikishi were generally competent.  Was a justification given for removing the qualifications at the time?

Fukuzaki uses his real name as shikona for the start, I guess Goshima as well, but Fukuzaki hopes to receive a rikishi-style shikona later from the oyakata

he is the hope for Aichi pref. to get a sekitori again, after Kaisho dropped 2 years ago. Same Kasugai shusshin as Izutsu (Akiseyama), same Chukyo sumo club kohai.

The NSK also shows Imada, with the standard Ima now
