Asashosakari 19,023 Posted September 3 https://www.instagram.com/p/C_dKk76PPRU/ Well, a new recruit at least for the Kyushu shindeshi kensa - Musashigawa's new foreign deshi, brother of its previous one Musashikuni and nephew to the shisho, has announced that he passed his recruiting interview(?) with the Kyokai today. His instagram reel does have him promising to ganbarize for the Kyushu maezumo, but of course it's almost certain that Daniel will have to wait the usual extra two months and we'll only see him mount the dohyo in January. Yubinhaad 11,603 Posted October 16 (edited) Bringing this over from the '25 Haru thread, because a press conference was held today at which it was announced Okada will join in Kyushu. Weight 160kg. On 03/09/2024 at 23:51, Asashosakari said: From what I can tell this news didn't go beyond a single-digit amount of Japanese Twitter comments and one sparsely populated Reddit thread so far, and I'm not even sure if this is the right basho thread to post it in, nor am I certain that this is actually going to result in a dohyo appearance in the end, but... https://www.reddit.com/r/SumoMemes/comments/1f1xtb2/a_senior_university_student_mentored_by_paris/ Credit to the creator of that thread for much of the information. So apparently Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Aaron Wolf, OB of Tokai University's judo club (the club in Japan, from what I gather), went to Takadagawa-beya for one of those typical "star athlete from another sport tries sumo" visits back in April. A current member of the club, 4th year student Ryotaro Okada 岡田 綾太朗 went with him, in what - at the time - looked like him just tagging along for the experience. But a week ago, it turned out that Okada has seemingly made the decision to actually join Takadagawa when he graduates early next year. This is of course highly unusual for a number of reasons. There's very little history of university graduates coming into ozumo without having done any sumo there at all (I don't believe Tokai even has a sumo club, not even intramural), and there's even less history of the current Takadagawa-oyakata (ex-Akinoshima) recruiting from university - in fact, the number of such deshi is zero across his 15-year tenure, and even the heya's share of high school grads is distinctly below average, so the focus has clearly been on finding recruits at age 15. In any case, according to the Tokai judo club website, Okada stands 176 cm tall and based on the video evidence he may be 140+ kg already (he competed in the top, 100+ kg category in judo, unsurprisingly). Your guess is as good as mine as to whether we'll see him in maezumo in Kyushu, Hatsu or Haru, if he doesn't quit before it gets that far, but I've made the potentially stupid assumption that they won't be throwing him in early given his lack of a sumo background, so this comment has ended up here in the Haru thread for the time being. BTW, the connection to Takadagawa-beya is that Akinoshima's son is also a recent Tokai judo club OB. Asashosakari 19,023 Posted October 17 (edited) I've put a note at the top of the original comment. I'm relatively surprised that we're seeing him this early because university graduates basically never show up in ozumo before January, but now that I'm thinking about it I suppose that's less because of anything related to their university education and more because the University and All-Japan sumo tournaments only take place in November/December, which isn't a hindrance for Okada. Chiyozakura 130 Posted October 17 He looks very short and not like 176cm. Takadagawa is only 176cm himself (at best) and looks a lot taller then the kid.

About 40 media people were at the campus of Tokai university (more pics:) https://www.u-tokai.ac.jp/news-campus/1087298/ Okada aims for makuuchi - hinting at the lack of sumo experience: "In judo being slow in applying techniques, I often lost by the shido penalties for that. I haven't shown results, but I think the clear decision of win and loss in sumo is suited for me." First time someone from this club joins ozumo, joining sumo coming from a university club alone is very rare, with a proper career there is only ozeki Kaiketsu, who joined from the Nichidai judo club, but he did quit university in first year. o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o
dingo 1,212 Posted October 21 (edited) Wow, that's a lot of photos about one event with the same people in slightly different poses. Hope he'll stay in sumo long enough to make it to makuuchi. At least he should have some throwing techniques which hopefully will make his sumo more interesting. Edited October 21 by dingo
