New recruits Kyushu 2024

Recommended Posts

Well, a new recruit at least for the Kyushu shindeshi kensa - Musashigawa's new foreign deshi, brother of its previous one Musashikuni and nephew to the shisho, has announced that he passed his recruiting interview(?) with the Kyokai today. His instagram reel does have him promising to ganbarize for the Kyushu maezumo, but of course it's almost certain that Daniel will have to wait the usual extra two months and we'll only see him mount the dohyo in January.

Short earlier thread: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/43164-new-musashigawa-hawaiian/

Various individual comments:

Not really a recruit for this year's Kyushu but probably for the next, Musashigawa has announced on twitter that Musashikuni's younger brother Daniel has joined the stable and has started his period to make a debut in pro-sumo

Not just probably, the above tweet says he had his (obligatory/successful) meeting with NSK officials and got a cultural activities visa the other day - he aims to be at the shindeshi kensa in one year (6 months are enough though, we'll see)

Musashikuni is 29 now; how old is his younger brother?

The Musashigawa beya post says he graduated from high school this summer, so 18 presumably.

The general age limit of so far below 23 for applicants to the shindeshi kensa will be below 25 now, like already for those with an appropriate athlete career https://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2024092601112

Do I read that right that those without particular qualifications will have to undergo separate physical tests (presumably the same tests as those under the 167 / 67 size standards)?

Indeed, they have to pass (a) separate physical test(s), I hadn't noticed that part

Not both are joining the heya right now - 2 new members for Otowayama-beya from the sumo club of Nagano pref. Sarashina agricultural high school, but one as gyoji.

Both are 18y-old 3rd years and just had their final keiko at the club - they are the only 2 members and Yuuki Ishikawa 市川友輝 leaves for the heya to start his gyoji training: "We'll meet again!"

Aoi Yamagishi 山岸蒼生 joins as rikishi - maybe for Hatsu, maybe for Haru. He lost the first bout of the Kokuspo juniors individuals final tournament yesterday

Ishikawa, Yamagishi

Bringing this over from the '25 Haru thread, because a press conference was held today at which it was announced Okada will join in Kyushu. Weight 160kg.

On 03/09/2024 at 23:51, Asashosakari said:

From what I can tell this news didn't go beyond a single-digit amount of Japanese Twitter comments and one sparsely populated Reddit thread so far, and I'm not even sure if this is the right basho thread to post it in, nor am I certain that this is actually going to result in a dohyo appearance in the end, but...

https://www.reddit.com/r/SumoMemes/comments/1f1xtb2/a_senior_university_student_mentored_by_paris/

Credit to the creator of that thread for much of the information. So apparently Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Aaron Wolf, OB of Tokai University's judo club (the club in Japan, from what I gather), went to Takadagawa-beya for one of those typical "star athlete from another sport tries sumo" visits back in April. A current member of the club, 4th year student Ryotaro Okada 岡田 綾太朗 went with him, in what - at the time - looked like him just tagging along for the experience. But a week ago, it turned out that Okada has seemingly made the decision to actually join Takadagawa when he graduates early next year.

This is of course highly unusual for a number of reasons. There's very little history of university graduates coming into ozumo without having done any sumo there at all (I don't believe Tokai even has a sumo club, not even intramural), and there's even less history of the current Takadagawa-oyakata (ex-Akinoshima) recruiting from university - in fact, the number of such deshi is zero across his 15-year tenure, and even the heya's share of high school grads is distinctly below average, so the focus has clearly been on finding recruits at age 15.

In any case, according to the Tokai judo club website, Okada stands 176 cm tall and based on the video evidence he may be 140+ kg already (he competed in the top, 100+ kg category in judo, unsurprisingly). Your guess is as good as mine as to whether we'll see him in maezumo in Kyushu, Hatsu or Haru, if he doesn't quit before it gets that far, but I've made the potentially stupid assumption that they won't be throwing him in early given his lack of a sumo background, so this comment has ended up here in the Haru thread for the time being.

BTW, the connection to Takadagawa-beya is that Akinoshima's son is also a recent Tokai judo club OB.

I've put a note at the top of the original comment. I'm relatively surprised that we're seeing him this early because university graduates basically never show up in ozumo before January, but now that I'm thinking about it I suppose that's less because of anything related to their university education and more because the University and All-Japan sumo tournaments only take place in November/December, which isn't a hindrance for Okada.

He looks very short and not like 176cm. Takadagawa is only 176cm himself (at best) and looks a lot taller then the kid.

Quite an overwhelming news and pics coverage for this announcement. About 40 media people were at the campus of Tokai university (more pics:) https://www.u-tokai.ac.jp/news-campus/1087298/

Okada aims for makuuchi - hinting at the lack of sumo experience: "In judo being slow in applying techniques, I often lost by the shido penalties for that. I haven't shown results, but I think the clear decision of win and loss in sumo is suited for me."

First time someone from this club joins ozumo, joining sumo coming from a university club alone is very rare, with a proper career there is only ozeki Kaiketsu, who joined from the Nichidai judo club, but he did quit university in first year.

Wow, that's a lot of photos about one event with the same people in slightly different poses. Hope he'll stay in sumo long enough to make it to makuuchi. At least he should have some throwing techniques which hopefully will make his sumo more interesting.

Two third-year students from Oita high schools are joining Ikazuchi-beya for this basho.

Sota Araki (荒木 颯太) studies at Yoshikan High School in Sakuragaoka, Oita, and it's there that he began doing sumo seriously. 187cm, 88kg.

Meanwhile, Shion Nagamatsu (永松 知恩) studies at Usa High School of Industry and Science in Usa, Oita. The shisho (former Komusubi Kakizoe) and Nagamatsu's mother were students at the same junior high school. He wants to reach Juryo in five years and surpass the shisho's career-high rank. 184cm, 104kg.

The school has a top class baseball club and he was a baseball novice, Asashoryu told him: "It will be hard". After graduation he wants to go to a Japanese university and continue with baseball, studying engineering. His future dream is to become national baseball coach in Mongolia, where baseball is only a minor sports.

Luvsangombo was 186cm, 116kg, he joined Shikoroyama-beya August last year, so both are in training for over a year now. Like his brother he was into baseball in Meitoku middle school - to please the baseball-loving father, but both the Blue Wolf and Asashoryu (and others) suggested sumo to him. He decided to join the sumo club instead when he proceeded to Meitoku high school "I can gambarize individually, can become stronger than anybody" - and wants to become sekitori as fast as possible. When he told uncle that he joins he got "A good heya, gambare!"

Daniel today was 181cm, 129kg - "Japanese is difficult, but I'm happy". He came to Japan in August last year and to the heya, is into oshi-zumo.

His dream is "yokozuna like the oyakata". In high school he was 120kg, lately he measured 134kg, 184cm (put something on the hair to flatten it today?)

Tanaka will use the shikona Daiko (大光,  だいこう). No sumo experience and from Hirakata city in Osaka, same as stablemate Yuma.

Assuming no future extensions to the shindeshi age limit, it looks like Agora will be the last recruit who was born in the 1990s.
