Ozeki Oonosato was injected  with the "soul of a Yokozuna." He has begun full training for his debut as an Ozeki in Kyushu and had twelve bouts - 9 wins and 3 losses against Juryo rikishi the likes of Shirokuma (seems to be over his injury?) after which he was "treated" to some love by his Oyakata, ex-Yokozuna Kisenosato, who still has it in him it seems, for seven full minutes.  By the time the Oyakata was done with him, he was rolling in the ring covered in sand totally exhausted. He is now aiming for a higher rank and is preparing for that. He felt his Oyakata's passion firsthand. It's rare for an Ozeki to be on the receiving end of some tough love. but as he made his Makuuchi debut in the summer tournament last year and it is only his 10th Makuuchi tournament, the Oyakata took it upon himself to dish out some tough training, personally showing his skills and teaching Oonosato the power of a Yokozuna with a "special lesson" lasting about 7 minutes. "I'm grateful that my Oyakata let me borrow his chest as it helped me get my body back in shape. There's only a limited amount of time left (until the first day). I want to start getting myself in shape for the tournament today." On the 17th, Oonosato withdrew from the autumn jungyo due to ill health caused by an "adenovirus infection," and is well aware of his lack of training. "It's been a while since I last did sumo," said Oonosato.. Starting next week, he will take part in the Nishonoseki Ichimon rengo keiko, with the intention of making up for the time lost so far. "I don't want to show bad form.  There are areas where I'm lacking in training, so I hope I can find  good things to work on," he said optimistically.

Houshouryuu trained at home today- 27 bouts, 23 wins against Daieishou, Hiradoumi and others."How many did I do? 27, huh.. Should have done three more, that would have made it a round 30..My body is in good condition. I was able to train well during the Autumn Jungyo. When I became a bit out of breath, it was at the right moment. I really want to get that yusho..I'm feeling great ," he said. He is now back to weighing 150 kilos. He hasn't really been able to be a part of the yusho race these last bashos after being promoted to Ozeki. He aims to change that.

Ex-Yokozuna Asashouryuu's nephew (18, 186/116, Houshouryuu's cousin, he wanted to be a baseball player, but was persuaded to join Shikoroyama beya) and ex- Yokozuna Musashimaru's nephew (18, 181/126, Musasshigawa beya) both passed the new recruits' test today.

Ozeki Kotozakura trained at home today against the likes of Kotoshouhou and was 9-1. It’s going to be his first basho as an Ozeki in Kyushu. “All bashos are equally important,” he said later. Last basho he finished with an 8-7 record, ending his double digit wins streak at 5 bashos. “After becoming Ozeki, I never intended to be satisfied with eight wins. 10 wins are the bare minimum if I want to achieve anything,” he said. Tomorrow is the Nishonoseki rengo keiko and the two other Ozeki are slated to participate as well. “It doesn’t matter who will be there, all I can do is give it my all..” he summed.

What does he mean?  10 wins at his rank is meaningless beyond 8.

Yesterday, the Nishonoseki rengo keiko was held at Sadogatake beya. Oonosato 11-9 against Kotozakura."Some parts were good, some not so much. Training against an Ozeki strengthens me and all I can do is gambarize," said Oonosato later. It was evident, though, that stamina -wise Kotozakura had the upper hand, pushing Oonosato to the edge and stuff. When he was beaten a few times after pushing Oonosato to the edge, Kotozakura philosophized, "Shit.." "I am not satisfied but I have been able to train well so far. I can only hope to carry this training into the basho. I need to stick to my style and believe in myself," he summed, roughly.

Takayasu trained today at the Tokitsukaze Ichimon rengo keiko held at Tokitsukaze beya. He was looking good, facing the likes of Kirishima and Wakamotoharu. "I'm in goo shape so I'm going out for degeiko. I'm pretty much ready. I want to be part of the excitement next basho and hope my preparations are good enough," he said

Houshouryuu was at the Tokitsukaze rengo keiko as well, facing  Kirishima (4-3), Wakamotoharu, Wakatakakage, Shoudai and others and was 16-3. He hasn't yushoed since Nagoya last year. "I've been training well during the the Autumn jungyo and after and am feeling good. I want to win that yusho for the first time in a while.." he explained  Kirishima himself, aiming for a return to Ozeki this basho (needs 13 wins) had the most bouts among the sekitori- 25. He showed a lot of confidence and the neck pain seems to be a thing of the past. "I'm thinking of the possible re-promotion, sure, but if I think only of that, my body will become weak.. I will be concentrating on each bout at hand and will count my wins after the final day, " he said.

And what about Shoudai, the returning Komusubi on his way back to Ozeki? He needs about 23 wins over the next two bashos to achieve that. Easy peasy.  He turned 33 today, and had 33 butt-sugari "bouts" to end his  training session. As for bouts, only seven. "I am not really thrilled about this age. It's the Kyushu basho so I will gambarize and go all out.  I want to go on fighting till I'm over 35," he divulged.

This November two years ago was his last basho as Ozeki ... it seems longer than that.  Since then he's 81-84.
